High surf kicked up by Hurricane Ike has uncovered a large wreck on the beach near Ft. Morgan, Alabama. The wooden vessel was clearly burned to the waterline, and may be a scuttled schooner from the Civil War. Blockade runners operated out of nearby Mobile until Ft. Morgan fell to Union assault in August, 1864. - Chris Baskind

This article tentatively identifies the wreck as that of the schooner Moniticello, a blockade runner surprised by the Union gunboat Kanewha in 1862. It was first discovered in 1969 after Hurricane Camille, and briefly appeared again in 2006. http://www.brett-robinson.com/news_full.html?news=678 - Chris Baskind
