You may not know it, but you probably have an OpenID. If you have a Yahoo account, you have an OpenID. If you have a Windows Live account, you will soon have an OpenID. And today, if you have a Google e-mail account, you can also start using your Gmail address as an OpenID. By joining the OpenID movement, Google completes the trifecta and adds all of its Gmail users to the hundreds of millions of Yahoo and Windows Live accounts that can also be used as a single login for any Website that accepts OpenID. While Google is...
...but they won't accept an OpenID, just like every other big site. It's all about ownership - they want to own YOU! - Stephen Foskett
OpenID still confuses me - isn't the idea to have one login for everywhere? But now I have at least four different OpenIDs (gmail, yahoo, livejournal, and the one I actually use that's linked to my blog). I still think the underlying ideal is good, but the implementation is...not. - faithx5
Jandy: Nailhead meets hammer. What good are a dozen "universal IDs" when no one accepts them? - Stephen Foskett
first time notice this today i think... when signing up for unltdworld account and it asks to sync data, but not a full openid implementation it seems. been using yahoo earlier tho for twitterfeeds etc. - Pajama Worker
So I don't need to use this anymore: http://emailtoid.net/ ? - Lindsay Donaghe
Try getting a Magnolia account without one. They require it now. - April Russo
Also, isn't one of the largest security rules is to NOT have the same login for every online account? - Wizetux

It’s great that all the big tech companies are now OpenID providers, but the Web is going to need a lot more relying parties before the technology really goes mainstream. - Evan Brown

Tux, this is slightly different since there is only one authentication, and you could theoretically reclaim that if it was hacked. So the loss of security is offset. - Stephen Foskett
mmmh... FAIL, at this stage (the stage where OAuth is not yet mainstrem enough). Using an email as an OpenID will be a big win, I know, but for now it will only confuse people, and we - OpenID supporters - really don't like another seed of chaos in that domain. "Sign in with your GMAIL account" is NOT "Sign in with OpenID". Sad. - Claudio Cicali
Well, the problem I have, and granted, I have not done much research into OpenID, but if you can login to my GMail and my bank supports OpenID, then would you not be able to login to my bank with my GMail account? - Wizetux
@wizetux yes, you're right there. Not a good idea to use OpenID for critical apps if the provider isn't secure. I use my own provider, and it's much more secure than gmail since it is OpenID only. - Stephen Foskett
Indeed, OpenID is not a trusting system, so I don't see it used in high secure area. - Claudio Cicali
Well, then I pray and hope that my bank or Credit Card will never go to OpenID. - Wizetux

I now have a single sign-on with 4 different providers. - Andrew Smith
I have so many OpenIDs it's crazy lol - Mona N
@Mona - But the point is to only have 1! - xero
I've got a few as well. Isin't there a way to combine them ( at least in the OpenID spec)? - Roberto Bonini
xero: Hence, the implementation FAIL of OpenID hahaha! - Mona N
yes, it is scary all the old accounts that turn into openid. So far I think I have: yahoo, claimid (created when the others didnt offer), aim, google, ms live, technorati, livejournal - and i think at least one of the pro-oriented social networks offers it too, perhaps more... I just hope that you can turn off their openid and link the account with a third party without having to delete and recreate the accounts. - Joelle Nebbe
++xero Yes! But everyone wants to be your OpenID provider, and very few people support it just for "sign in" Vox for example support OpenID... but only as a provider! It doesn't help you comment on Vox... you still have to join first :-( .. go ahead and try at http://reechard.vox.com - Richard Walker
I'm generally supportive of OpenID, but I really want to understand what Google data about me gets provided to the 3rd-party, and (more importantly) what 3rd-party data gets provided to Google. I wouldn't want to provide to Google or any other company information about my login places and times around the whole wide web. - Logical Extremes
Maybe I should create an OpenID provider that you log in with using an OpenID. Then it'd be nicely circular and everyone could implement just my provider protocol and drop the rest. - xero
The providers need to get their URL act together, and the consumers need to work on usability. - xero
that's pretty cool though i've never seen open id as adding any benefit to my online experience. maybe this will re-introduce a lot of people like me - Cee Bee
Sweet! Can I transfer my accounts from one openid to another? - Mattie Kenny
@CeeBee - The only way OpenID actually benefits your experience is if everyone switches to it. The point is you only have to remember one super secure password and login instead of hundreds or thousands. You also only have to maintain online profiles in one place, since everyone pulls from your OpenID (to whatever degree you've given access). In reality, it's just Windows CardSpace simplified, which was of course .NET Passport made better. - xero

But it doesn't work in a lot of places still right? - Steve Rubel
Apparently it's not actually OpenID at all. http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/google-doesnt-use-openid/ - Eric Florenzano
I was thinking of using my geekpi.mp as my openid, but what if they go away? I think I'll stick to using my LiveJournal. - Rahsheen Porter
OMG Eric, that is hilarious. Did you read this? "This is something that Google cooked up that resembles OpenID masquerading as OpenID since that’s what people want to see – and that’s what Microsoft announced just the day before." HAHA - Mona N
ZOMG. Not really OpenID at all. - Bill Sodeman

Could this be considered evil since they called it OpenID but it really isn't??? - Jason Shultz

Wait...WTF? LOL - Rahsheen Porter
Hrm...so this is the same "openid" that allows me to login to passpack.com with my google account info? I's confused.... - Rahsheen Porter
I never liked OpenID. Seemed so counter-intuitive, difficult to use, and limited. That's why I never use mine. - genieyclo

And OpenID is all sorts of FAIL. It's just a way for corporations to collect info.. and sooner or later Facebook will hit up all these companies, purchase our data for "personalized ads" since they can't monetize by apps. EPIC FAILs all across the board HAHA - Mona N
ah, you guys read the fine print way too much. i just read headlines and trust. (actually, i'm just a FF share pimp whore, and i expect the lazy web to tell me what it all means... which u just did) - dave mcclure
Hey - I'm right with you. Someone posted that in my "OMG Gmail is Now an OpenID" zomg! post. Another reason why I - Mona N
