Comment: Lucian Freud's early works show familiar taste for the uglyThough his official biographer tends to deny it, there is a very noticeable gap between Lucian Freud's present style and the way he painted at the outset of his phenomenal career....

Spring and FallFall. Yellow and brick red leaves cling, trembling, to the trees. A gust of crisp wind, and a few are dislodged and scatter to the ground to join the ones that crackle under my feet. It is ten a.m. in New Zealand, and the grass is still coated with dew.  My tennis shoes leave shiny prints on the lawn, ending where I head across the gravel trail. I hear each step, register the crunch of the tiny rocks crushed and spat out from my feet. The air is chilly here in the North Island, twenty degrees or so cooler than...

Google - keep it open until we can enclose itWails of woe today as the Net Neutrality Fraternity wake up to find that Google is preparing to jump the fence and leave them to the sharks - its in the WSJ here. And, as SAI notes: One of the most kneejerk Internet causes in recent years has been "net neutrality"--the absurd conviction that phone and cable companies who paid hundreds of billions of dollars to lay the cable that Internet data travels over shouldn't be able to charge different rates for different tiers of data service. From the beginning, big Internet content companies like Google have fiercely championed this....

AT&T goes live with U-verse TV in Raleigh, NC areaFiled under: Fiber Be still our hearts! The rumors were indeed true, and U-verse TV has at long last arrived in the Triangle to combat the monopoly that is Time Warner Cable. A breaking report from WRAL has it that the carrier is "offering its U-verse TV service as well as high-speed internet service in the Triangle," but fails to elaborate on specific service areas. We've heard from locals that Cary, NC will be one of the first locations with access, but until AT&T issues its own confirmation, it's hard to say for certain. Obviously, those who sign up will...

Trainspotting's Carlyle to kick Stargate in its biscuit-arseFiled under: Industry, Stargate, Casting, Reality-FreeRobert Carlyle is a fine actor with an impressive resume (The Full Monty, 28 Weeks Later, 24: Redemption to name a few), but he'll always be the hard-drinking, C-word screaming, Ewan McGregor-slapping Begbie from Trainspotting to me. Which is why it comes as a surprise that he's been cast as the lead in the next Stargate series, Stargate Universe.Carlyle will play Dr. David Rush, leader of a group of scientists and civilians trapped on a ship traveling through space. Word is that Dr. Rush, charged with finding a way to return his crew home, might...

Hewlett-Packard nukes your hard drive to repair the letter 'P'Consumerist reader Marjan returned her Hewlett Packward laptop for an in-warranty repair. The problem? A broken letter 'P.' HP's solution? To fix the 'P'... then nuke the hard drive. In truth, this isn't uncommon: back when Joel and I wrote The Consumerist, we got these same kinds of stories all the time. Most laptop warranty programs seem to require a technician to return the laptop to the customer in factory condition... which means with your half-finished novel deleted and factory-default crapware re-installed to the system tray. For all my problems with Apple's Genius Bar warranty service, this is something they...

HOW TO: Add Live Video to Your Applications (Stickam’s API)Running a streaming video site isn’t cheap. Yahoo realized this and shutdown its Yahoo Live service, while YouTube’s lack of profitability is the constant ire of many. Stickam has apparently taken note, and is launching an API that enables other websites to utilize its service to add live streaming video. Sites that implement the API can let their users record, watch, or collaborate on videos, all without leaving. Stickam envisions the API being ideal for social networking sites, online learning, and customer support. The company explains the basics and offers a few other example uses in the video below: While...
