McCarthy ConcedesWhen even the Cheney-Addington fan writes the following, you have some idea of just how dumb and counter-productive Bush's detainee policy has been: It seems pretty clear that the Bush administration did not help matters here.  Nearly seven years ago, the President publicly claimed the Algerians were planning a bomb attack on the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo.  Last month, however, the Justice Department suddenly informed the Court that it was no longer relying on that information.  We've seen this sort of thing happen too many times over the last seven years, and the effect can only be to reduce the...

Seth Meyers Defends SNL Against Claims of HomoverloadSNL Head Writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers told the LGBT-related magazine The Advocate that he "stands behind everything that happened" on last Saturday's show that has many critics crying foul over its reliance of gay jokes in almost every sketch of the night. Meyers takes the "I have plenty of black friends" defense by pointing out that there are gay writers on the show and that SNL is "on the right side of the issue." He also compared the abundance of gay-related sketches to come out of a week involving a lot of Prop 8-related discussion to this...

Sooner or later we need to slam shut the door on technical have-nots. Pew Research found that nearly half of adults surveyed need help setting up computers and cell phones. Ars Technica notes what follows: Kids are always fixing their parents' PCs. But they don't take these insights to the logical conclusion: It's time to fire the IT support team. Imagine how much progress we could make as a society if we just dropped those who just can't merge onto the Information Superhighway. I will never get back those lost weekends I spent formatting my mom's Filemaker forms or troubleshooting...

Walter Mossberg, who has been reviewing technology since 1991 for the Wall Street Journal in his weekly "Personal Technology" column, is convinced the companies that succeed in this type of econaclypse, as AllThingsD has dubbed the economy, will be those that focus on innovation. "It has been my observation that while things do slow down in bad times, they don't stop," Mossberg said. Speaking to a packed room this week at the Dow Jones VentureWire Technology Showcase in Redwood City CA, Mossberg, the "Most Influential Computer Journalist" according to Time Magazine, described the trends that excite him right now as...

Only two and a half months after announcing Picasa 3 beta, Google has done the uncharacteristic and has committed to a full product release. Here's the clincher: Picasa 3 (download it here when Google updates the file) is the exact same desktop organizer and editor it was under the beta flag. (This is a good wagon for the Gmail team to climb aboard--Google's e-mail service has been in beta since 2004 and its latest releases have been earthshaking themes and emoticons.) Although Version 3 beta users won't see changes in this release, those switching from Version 2.7 will enjoy...

When we first reviewed Mufin, a music recommendation service that is entirely based around algorithms that can automatically detect the similarities between different songs, we only gave it a pretty average review. Since then, however, Mufin has greatly improved its service and added Facebook and Myspace applications. The most interesting new product, however, is Mufin's new iTunes plugin, which brings Mufin's recommendation engine to your own iTunes collection and allows you to create automatic playlists based solely on the musical similarities between the songs. In our tests, Mufin often performed better than Apple's Genius feature, but for now, the plugin...

Cable One makes some HD channels viewable only with CableCARD / STBFiled under: Tuners, CableAt first glance, we assumed that Cable One had relegated a number of channels to switched digital video, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, company officials have proclaimed that "cable programmers like Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD and ESPN HD have requested their signals to be scrambled," meaning that subscribers will now need to fork out for a CableCARD or cable company-issued set-top-box in order to see all 24 high-def stations offered in Sioux City, Iowa. Ah well, you've been looking for a valid reason to make the leap to a carrier with a...

Lessons learned from Google's Lively experiment Not all Google endeavors turn into gold. Case in point: Lively, a virtual world launched less than five months ago, albeit in "beta." Google announced on its blog late Wednesday that it would shutter the product at the end of the year to focus on its bread-and-butter search business. Here's an excerpt from the post: Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it's the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people's lives. But we've also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet...

Thanksgiving Recipe: Turkey Wing ConfitOur fourth Thanksgiving recipe is for the main course—turkey wing confit— and it doesn’t require a lot of labor or time. But the real beauty of this recipe is twofold in that you don’t need a whole turkey, and that the ‘leftovers’ will last a lot longer than the typical post-holiday binge week. All you really need is a big pot of duck fat, salt, garlic, a few turkey wings, and a 200 degree oven. Unsurprisingly, this recipe comes from the book Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, by Canadian author Jennifer McLagan. She writes:Although duck legs are the...

Rawls, Oakeshott, Obama And ModernityA reader writes: While you have always celebrated your attachment to conservative thinkers like Michael Oakeshott, your views often strike me being most closely aligned with John Rawls.  Your discussion today about modernity smashing the social good into little bits could have been a passage out of Political Liberalism.  You captured the essence of the book in this sentence:  "That way is to agree that our civil order will mean less; that it will be a weaker set of more procedural agreements that try to avoid as much as possible deep statements about human nature." Rawls found that in the...

NYTCo Slashes Dividend To $.06 Per Share From $0.23; October Revs Fall 9.4 PercentThe worsening media economy has forced the New York Times Co (NYSE: NYT). to reduce the dividend it pays to shareholders, ending a weeks of speculation about when it would do so.  Board of Directors today declared a quarterly dividend of $.06 per share on the Company's Class A and Class B common stock, down from $.23 per share in the third quarter of 2008. While some of the family members who were previously getting $25 million on the $.23 per share dividend will likely complain, many analysts will feel that the cut didn't go far enough. The company had...

Smart CardA few weeks ago I got a smart card to use with gpg for hardware encryption. I'm no security fanatic but I like the idea, so I bought a "lots of different cards all in one" reader. I got a MSI StarReader SMART which should support smart cards and was available locally (strange habit, I like to go to real shops instead of the online competition sometimes). I played around with it, but it seemed to just sit there and do nothing (except read every variant of useless memory card). What made my day is that after only one mail...

PCH, Benefits Of Positive Thinking Edition: Cooked Countach or Rusty Rolls? [Project Car Hell]Welcome to Project Car Hell, where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Yesterday, we saw a 6.9 Benz face defeat for the first time in Project Car Hell history, a feat that generally requires unholy intervention by the Prince Of Darkness himself, or at least the presence of Citroën badges. We've had a run of affordable Hell Projects lately, and that's fine… but sometimes we need to mainline some optimism and look at spending a few more bucks at the gateway to Gearhead Gehenna. We've had some PCH Lambos before, including...

Buy Apple Now, Get Company Free In 7 Years (AAPL)Apple's stock (AAPL) crashed to a new low today--just above $80. At this level, the company's enterprise value (excluding cash) is $52 billion, which is 6X trailing free cash flow of $8.5 billion. 6X! How cheap is that? Let's say Apple gets hit hard by the global economic collapse and free cash flow falls to $7 billion next year and stays there for the next decade. If you bought the whole company today, you would get your entire investment back in 7 years, and you would get all the cash Apple generated in perpetuity from there for free. What if...

Should you be paid for the time it takes to boot your computer?Filed under: News, WindowsThere's no question that we all want computers that boot up and shut down more quickly. While a fresh install of Windows XP might boot as quickly as 30 seconds on some computers, the more applications you load onto your computer, the slower it will boot. Things get even worse with Windows Vista which loads about as quickly as paint dries. While Microsoft and other OS makers are working to cut boot times, if you're using a current generation operating system, odds are you spend at least a few minutes every day waiting for your computer to...
