Larry Wall Talks Perl, Culture, and CommunityLostDiver writes "Computerworld Australia caught up recently with Larry Wall of Patch and Perl fame. He talks about the development of Perl as 'scratching an itch,' a release date for Perl 6 (Christmas day, year unknown) and beauty versus practicality. Computerworld also has some more information on the upcoming Perl 6. A while back they interviewed Bjarne Stroustrup of C++ fame as well." jamie pointed out a interesting, related video of a presentation by Clay Shirky from last year's Supernova conference in which he discusses why the Perl community (or any web community) drives progress and innovation.Read more of this...

Display Advertising Works, But It Works Differently Than SearchThere's been a lot of talk recently that search and other forms of "performance" or "direct" online marketing will continue to grow in the downturn while display and other forms of "brand" marketing will struggle. I think that's likely to be true at some level but it doesn't mean that display advertising doesn't work. In fact, a recent comScore white paper that was presented last week at the Empirical Generalizations In Advertising Conference at the Wharton School is very enlightening. You can get a copy of the white paper by asking for it here. comScore operates a panel of over...

In Season: FennelFrom Serious Eats Photograph from clayirving on Flickr Fennel is a sight for sore eyes during the potato-filled winter months. Crunchy like celery and and slightly sweet like licorice or anise, it'll brighten your plate right up. Fennel loses its flavor as it ages so be sure to eat it right away. It'll keep in your crisper for about four days. If 'Twilight' Was 10 Times Shorter And 100 Times More Honest Link: http://www.cracked.com/article_16878_... Basically, it's Twilight in 10 minutes (instead of 2 hours) and minus the screaming girls. With lines like: “I'm just a hollow placeholder for all of the teenage girls in the audience to project their personalities onto,” Cracked takes a crack at summarizing hit vampire movie, Twilight. AP: Many Insisting That Obama Is Not Black — A perplexing new chapter is unfolding in Barack Obama's racial saga: Many people insist that "the first black president" is actually not black. Debate over whether to call this son of a white Kansan and a black Kenyan biracial, African-American, mixed-race, half-and-half, multiracial _ or, in Obama's own words, a "mutt" _ has reached a crescendo since Obama's election shattered assumptions about race. Obama has said, "I identify as African-American _ that's how I'm treated and that's how I'm viewed. I'm proud of it." In other words, the world gave Obama no choice but to be black, and he was...

These dNaNo radio-controlled race cars by Japanese Kyosho are packed with high-tech features, they are not the usual R/C toy cars that you’re used to. The INQ1 from 3 - first impressions as a social networking device When you take the INQ1 out of the box it feels like a quality device with its solid metal and plastic construction. However that illusion was shattered when I switched it on, as the display looks like a low end device and the icons and menus have a basic appearance. Instead of a user guide in the box there are a series of ‘flash’ cards which explain the principle applications. Although I thought the info was a bit thin it probably reflects the fact that non geeks rarely read user guides and just dive straight in! The full user guide is...

Twilight Sequel Gets New Director, Plunges Towards Failure [New Moon]Producers for New Moon, the sequel to teen vamp flick Twilight, have selected their replacement for the ousted Catherine Hardwicke: Chris Weitz, director of American Pie and The Golden Compass. We ask: Are they insane? It's not that we're pulling for Hardwicke's return to the franchise (despite finding the direction of Twilight one of its high points), but have Summit Entertainment's decision makers forgotten that Weitz was the man behind the failure of The Golden Compass movie, the last pre-Twilight teen-book-phenomenon that was supposed to be the next Harry Potter? I'm not saying that the lightning of poor-choices-concerning-what-to-keep-and-what-to-cut-from-the-source-material, or even...

Toilet Paper Shovel Provides Easy Outdoor Relief [Design]With his radical new simple toilet design, Alejandro Bona has single-handedly made pooping outdoors cool again. Consisting of little more than a toilet paper dispenser attached to a shovel, this all but destined for a Hammacher Schlemmer catalog design allows you to: 1. Go outside 2. Dig a hole 3. Poop 4. Wipe 5. Bury 6. Win And no longer will dogs have all the fun when it comes to defecating on someone's lawn. However, the portable toilet paper caddy seen in the pic is, well, pretty worthless. Unless you're in the habit of wandering campsites distributing TP to those...

This 70's game show wasn't really magnificent and those aren't really marbles - VIDEOSFiled under: OpEd, Video, Game Show, Reality-FreeHave you ever come across an old TV show that you probably wouldn't have remembered on your own but when presented with video or audio evidence that the show actually existed makes you say "Oh, that's right, I remember that show!?!" This is one of those TV shows. The Magnificent Marble Machine was a short-lived game show in the mid-70's that involved a gigantic pinball machine. Art James was the host and Johnny Gilbert the announcer. Celebs would team with ordinary citizens and answer questions in the early rounds (the dull part of the game)...

Virgin Media looks to beef up linear HD lineupFiled under: Industry, Cable, SatelliteVirgin Media's in a pretty big hole compared to Sky on the HD front. As it stands, VM has a single linear high-def station (BBC HD), while Sky delivers 29. Pretty easy choice, right? Virgin Media's CEO Neil Berkett, in a presentation to the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, noted that it was looking to "level the linear content playing field versus Sky," and also mentioned a "plan to add linear high-definition channels." Unfortunately, he failed to elaborate on a quantity or time frame for delivery, but at least we know it's...

Microsoft: Internet Explorers 5 through 8 vulnerable to attackFiled under: Security, Windows, Browsers There's a bug in Internet Explorer that allows attackers to execute malicious code on your machine under certain conditions. When Microsoft first acknowledged the vulnerability a few days ago the company was under the impression that only Internet Explorer 7 was affected. But the security advisory has been updated and it's now clear that the flaw affects every version of Internet Explorer from IE 5.01 SP 4 through Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2.Microsoft recommends enabling a firewall and anti-virus software to minimize your risk, as well as using Protected Mode in IE7 or IE8. We'd...

Nokia has just expanded its Supernova range with a Graphite and Passionate Purple Supernova 7610, 7510, 7310 and 7210. The two examples below contain at their core, messages which are evocative and provocative (and almost by definition will not be agreeable to all viewers).Advent Conspiracy Promo VideoThis is another example of a message being expressed with kinetic type plus images (mostly simple vector images) without any voice over. TWIP Photo Book Reviews #34 - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers Author: Scott Kelby Publisher: New Riders Review by Conrad J. Obregon When Lightroom 1.0 was introduced, everyone who tried it was a new user, even the folks who had tried the beta editions that Adobe had offered. That meant that it was easy to say that Scott Kelby’s older book, “the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers” was one of the best of the hoard of Lightroom books for all users. Lightroom 2 (LR2) is a different matter. There is already a large base of competent Lightroom users who...

FCC cancels upcoming meeting, will not vote on white space The FCC has announced that it has canceled its upcoming December 18th meeting. As part of that meeting, the FCC had planned to vote on the proposed auction of portions of the white space spectrum which would be used for free, nationwide wireless broadband. The white space initiative generated a firestorm of controversy that pitted T-Mobile, the National Association of Broadcasters and celebrities like Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, and the Dixie Chicks against technology companies such as Google, Dell, Microsoft and Motorola. With the upcoming meeting now scuttled and a vote delayed indefinitely, the white space spectrum issue is...

Street LexicographersCaleb Crain explains the value of modern slang:One comes a little closer to a definition of slang by thinking about context. Dirty words suggest that the audience is no better than the speaker, and vice versa. Slang, on the other hand, usually suggests that speaker and audience share membership in a group. A prostitute who describes a slow-to-satisfaction customer as a thirty-three, thereby analogizing him to the standard speed for long-playing vinyl records, is probably not speaking to a police officer. A gay man who describes a lover with a similar quirk as long-winded is probably not speaking to a...
