George Steinbrenner, one of the most notorious owners in professional sports, has officially relinquished control of the Yankees, naming his son Hal as head of the organization. The announcement came from Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig following owners' meetings where Hal Steinbrenner was unanimously approved as new owner. Hal, who runs the financial side of the Yankees, will continue to share the role of chairman with his brother Hank, who oversees the baseball operations. Hank Steinbrenner tends to lead like his father did--drawing headlines for putting down former manager Joe Torre and calling the Red Sox Nation "a bunch...
White label multimedia provider Pixsy has announced a variety of new distribution partnerships today. Filed under: Industry, Misc, Internet Now here's a couple that really makes sense. Sonic Solution's fancy schmancy burn technology is already used on Qflix-enabled DVD burners, and those very drives are used to toast CinemaNow movies. See the connection? Do ya? Obvious similarities aside, Sonic really has entered into a "definitive agreement" to acquire CinemaNow, and after the deal goes down, CinemaNow will combine with Sonic's Qflix team to form "a new Premium Content Group under the direction of Mark Ely, Sonic's EVP of Strategy." The reason? To increase the placement of CinemaNow's storefront on PCs and consumer electronics devices,...
In case you’re one of those douches that wear Porsche memorabilia and correct people on the proper punctuation of the Italian namesake, this racing wheel is for you, buddy. The Fantec-made Porsche 911 Carrera Racing Wheel works with both the PC and PS3. In case this wheel seems vaguely familiar, it seems Fantec makes these Porsche-branded wheels for each Porsche model as this one is for the 911 Carrera where the one announced a few weeks ago was for the Xbox 360, but also modeled after the 911 Turbo. Interested? Ships for $129 but not until February 15th, 2009....

Only two and a half months after announcing Picasa 3 beta, Google has done the uncharacteristic and has committed to a full product release. Here's the clincher: Picasa 3 (download it here when Google updates the file) is the exact same desktop organizer and editor it was under the beta flag. (This is a good wagon for the Gmail team to climb aboard--Google's e-mail service has been in beta since 2004 and its latest releases have been earthshaking themes and emoticons.) Although Version 3 beta users won't see changes in this release, those switching from Version 2.7 will enjoy...
From Serious Eats Photograph from LIFE Magazine Google archives Earlier this week Google made the web a cooler place by adding historic photos from Life magazine to its image archive. We took a look around to check out how Thankgivings past looked. Today, here's a photo of different types of fruit relish from 1959. LIFE featured these dishes as a substitute for cranberries, which were banned at the time because of contamination. The berries had been dusted with a weed-killer called aminotriazole, which caused cancer in rats. This scare came two weeks before the holiday, causing desperate housewives (the 1950s...
Many times the only sign that you've neglected the proper maintenance of your vehicle is something important falling off, like a wheel. Jalopnik commenter Pres started off to work one morning only to have his wheel exit stage left shortly after takeoff and quickly make friends with a nearby bush. Thankfully, the only damage is a bent suspension bracket and some tweaked sheet metal. Remember kids, always keep those lug nuts torqued to spec. And knowing is half the battle....
I've long suspected that the best job ever would be to work in product stress testing—because you basically get paid to break shit all day. Nokia sent over a bunch of info detailing how their test centers operate, leaving me fully convinced this would indeed be my dream gig. Not only do they run over 200 mechanical tests on these things, but where else could you play with a bunch of machines that bend, bake, humidify, spray, poke and drop phones? (And yeah, that phone in the picture above just got poked a million times...literally.) Here's a look at a...

Filed under: Fun, Google, Search, Web We've all been there. You're working, and an instant message window pops up. It's your friend, who I'll call "Captain Obvious," and he wants to know what that new James Bond movie is called. Even if you know, why is he asking you? That's what Google is for. Instead of answering his question straight away, just say "Here, let me Google that for you."Let Me Google That For You will give your friend a step-by-step reminder about how to Google. Step 1 (type In your question) shows the question being input into the Google...
