Filed under: Displays, Mitsubishi, Projector Mitsubishi's HC7000 1080p projector just started leaving the docks not too, too long ago, and now the kind folks over at BigPictureBigSound have published a thorough review after spending a decent bit of time with it. Installation and setup was said to be "a simple affair," and one of the first things they noticed upon firing it up was just how quiet it was while operating. In fact, critics deemed it the quietest projector they had tested in this price range. Testers fired up an upscaled DVD after calibration procedures were done, and what they...
With so much financial strife, it sounds insane to splurge on an HDTV now. Good thing there are 40" or bigger sets to be had for under $900. But which ones don't suck? To find, we grabbed five HDTVs you can find on the street for under $900—some require a little snooping to find that price, but they're out there. We've got four LCDs and one plasma, with four of them were discount brands, while one was from a pretty top name brand. We're looking at a few things: are any sub-$900 TVs actually watchable? Are any lower-tier brands as...
Filed under: Displays, Sharp, DLP, ProjectorNah, it's no 1080p, but if 720p will do ya, Sharp's got a new one you should consider. The PG-F255W DLP beamer packs a WXGA resolution (1,280 x 800), BrilliantColor technology, 2,500 ANSI lumens, a 2,200:1 contrast ratio, DVI / VGA inputs, integrated speakers, RS-232C / USB sockets, Ethernet and a variable audio line-out. The PJ is geared for more commercial applications (think education, churches, board rooms, etc.), but we don't see any reason why it won't handle your home cinema needs just fine. It's available this month for "under $1,000," which probably means $999.99...

Filed under: Industry, Misc, Displays, Other hardware, Toshiba What's up with Australia and its promotions? Last year, the big deal was Toshiba giving away free HD DVD players with an LCD HDTV purchase and Sony tossing in a PS3 with select 1080p BRAVIAs. This year, we've got Panasonic throwing in a Wii with an HDTV and Toshiba handing out netbooks. You heard right -- for Aussies who plunk down for an XV500 series HDTV at 37-, 42- or 46-inches between now and January 15, 2009, they'll also receive an 8.9-inch NB100 (AU$799) netbook free of charge. Of course, that's "while...
Filed under: Reviews, Displays, Mitsubishi When we had Mitsubishi's 1080p iSP LT-52149 HDTV in our own labs for testing, we weren't exactly thrilled with the image quality, particularly the 120Hz shenanigans. The folks over at Home Entertainment saw a lot of the same flaws we did, though they seemed to think the overall package was palatable after a great deal of tweaking. In fact, they outrightly stated that this set "requires more attention during video setup than other high-end LCDs [it had] tested," but it was worth the effort. The soundbar didn't serve as a 5.1-channel surround sound system or...
Filed under: Reviews, Displays, Mitsubishi, Projector Mitsubishi's 1080p HC6500 has been shipping for just over a month now, but if you've been holding off from unloading $2,500 until you saw a bona fide review, you can finally have a peek and move on with life. CNET was able to wrap its retinas around the expansive image beamed out of this sexy piece of front-projection goodness, and overall, it had incredibly positive things to say. For instance, the deep blacks were applauded, skin tones were "natural," noise wasn't an issue at all and the input selection was quite stout. The only...

The game Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix is now available on Xbox Live Arcade (and PSN) for 1,200 Microsoft points. I bought it this morning and promptly realized two things: one, it’s tremendous and two, I’m rubbish at Street Fighter nowadays. I played about halfway through Arcade mode before finally giving up—like I said, rubbish—but that was enough to ensure that I’ll be playing it throughout the weekend. You’ve no doubt seen screenshots, maybe a GameVideo or two, but actually playing the game, at 1080p, is something else entirely. All the characters handle exactly as you remember—down-down/forward-forward-punch...
Most agree that this years Black Friday so-called deals kind of.. well.. suck. Sure, there are a few Blu-ray players around the $150 mark and Wal-Mart has an old Magnavox for $128. Every retailer has a $99 GPS along with a wide selection of cheap flash memory, but those are not worth sleep deprivation alone. Best Buy is trying to pawn off a 50-inch 720p plasma and Circuit City’s 1080p model is just an entry level Samsung. It just seems that none of these deals are worth parking lot camping. Except for the Sam’s Club Wii deal that turned out to be...
Whether it's wishful thinking, educated guessing or true leakage is unclear, but the photo nerds are now abuzz about a Nikon D400 follow-up to the D300 we love so much, which would have D90-like video capability that could potentially rival Canon's 1080p-shootin' EOS 5D Mark II. If that was all gibberish to you, don't think on it a moment further. But if what you just read gave you a feeling down in the nether regions that you'd prefer not to discuss, go check out Photography Bay for the full rumor rundown. [Photography Bay]...
Filed under: Misc, Blu-ray Looking to edit some of that sweet, luscious 1080p footage and burn to Blu-ray, are you? If you're feverishly nodding your head up and down, and you're all about getting a bargain, listen up. MAGIX has just introduced its Video Pro X professional video editing software, and with it comes Blu-ray support and a $199.99 introductory price for current MAGIX users ($249.99 for everyone else). The program imports video material from XDCAM camcorders and can natively edit AVCHD material, and of course, users can create 1080p discs with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound if you've got...
I stumbled across a few deals on HDTVs today, so I thought I'd be a nice guy and group them all up for you. First up is a deal from Amazon: buy any qualifying Samsung TV along with this Samsung Blu-Ray player and get $200 off, which means Amazon is essentially paying you four bucks to take the $196 Blu-Ray player off their hands. You can also get a 42" Panasonic VIERA plasma HDTV for only $660, which is a good hundred dollars off its general retail price. It's packed with three HDMI inputs, an SD slot, and a 15,000:1...
Samsung has something special today with the 23-inch 2494HS SyncMaster LCD full HD monitor. It comes packing with HDMI, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, but most importantly, a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Not only does the monitor have DVI-D and VGA, but also a HDCP friendly HDMI input which will work nicely with computers, Blu-ray players, and yup, even Netflix via Xbox 360. The monitor is expected to carry a MSRP of 40,000 yen ($420 USD) when it drops in the Japanese market in the middle of December....
Filed under: Displays, Sony FED (or Field Emission Display) hasn't quite caught on as quickly as some other display technologies, but Sony's still out there doing its best to move things forward, and it certainly looks to have turned more than a few heads with its latest demo. Apparently not content with simply showing off a new 19-inch display from its spin-off, Field Emission Technologies, Sony went so far as to demo it with a customized version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue that's playable at 240 fps. To do that, Sony used four PS3s to increase the frame rate, something...

The folks at HD Guru are reporting that Samsung will be deeply slashing prices on their 2008 line big-screen DLP HDTVs starting this Sunday. We're talking discounts of up to $600 (maybe even more if purchased with an online discount). That puts the 67" (HL67A750) 1080p LED-lit DLP at $1800 after the $600 price cut. Obviously, there are compromises with rear projection, but personally I would rather have both good picture quality and the wads of cash I would blow on a thinner LCD. A list of old and new MAP prices on Samsung DLPs: •HL61A650/61” (Lamp) $1299.99 ($300 savings)...
