America Finds Fascinating More Interesting Than Mars [Life On Mars]Even though Life On Mars is on hiatus until January next year, former journalist Barbara Walters has still managed to give the show a ratings black eye; her replacement special Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008 gained an amazing 59% in terms of viewership over the time-traveling cop show (That's approximately 5.5 million viewers). Not fully realizing what this meant, ABC have immediately announced plans to send Walters back to the 1970s to team up with Harvey Keitel and fight crime. [Variety]...

1969 Mercury Cougar [Down On The Street]Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We've seen a few Alameda Cougars so far, including this '67 (which later turned up in the wrecking yard), this '68, this '73, and this '75. Now we're going to look at a first-gen Cougar that's lived in the same neighborhood since I was a kid. It's got a very 1970s two-tone paint job, which has taken some punishment from the California sun, but it still looks pretty good and it gets its owner to work...

Your browser's pop-up blocker is great when it does what it's supposed to, but it was never programmed to let you play this 1970s arcade classic with your browser windows. Turn it off to get your game on....

Elisabeth Mahoney's radio reviewWaking up early yesterday in a remote rural setting, Farming Today (Radio 4) was the obvious listening choice. Having done the naive townie thing all weekend of thinking how stress-free countryside living might be, the programme came as an emphatic reality check. Presenter Anna Hill discussed links between organophosphates in sheep dip and sheep farmers falling seriously ill. Many listeners had contacted the show with their own stories of illness after years of handling the products, which all sheep farmers had to use from the 1970s to 1990s. One woman detailed a terrible range of symptoms, which ultimately led her...

The Single Greatest Year in Tech History, Part One: The 1970sWith movies, it’s unquestionably 1939, the fabled year that saw the release of Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Dark Victory, and Goodbye Mr. Chips. With baseball, there are multiple contenders, including 1924, 1949, and 1998…but I’m a Red Sox fan, so let’s just say it–it was 2004. Rock music? [...]...

Spelt and Farro - Not the Same, OK?Filed under: Grains, Recipes, Newspapers Farro (emmer wheat) and spelt are not the same thing, as this New York Times essay amusingly points out. While farro cooks like pasta, high-protein spelt needs waaaay more time and love to become edible. So what is spelt, that oft-mocked hippie grain, good for? Apparently those brick-like 1970s "health loves" have gone the way of the Earth Shoe, and the new generation of spelt bread is like wheat bread but with a tougher crust. And spelt flour can be made to make genuinely edible pancakes, pizza dough, pasta and crackers as well. Plus, for...

Rickrolling Macy’s ParadeRickrolling was taken to the largest audience yet Thursday at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. Instead of a performance by the characters of “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” onlookers were treated to a rendition of “Never Gonna Give You Up” by singer Rick Astley. The switch happened on Thursday morning, during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The puppets on the float featuring the Cartoon Network show began to sing 1970s hit and TV theme song “Best Friend,” but stopped abruptly, revealing Astley, himself, dancing and singing to his signature tune. Green tea trifle with bacon and eggs? Ah, it must be the new Little (Michelin) ChefHeston Blumethal is the three-star Michelin chef famous for creating bacon-and-egg ice-cream, quail jelly and snail porridge. Little Chef does all-day breakfasts, burgers and chips and chunky syrup-soaked pancakes topped off with a vaguely disconcerting feeling that the 1970s never ended. They were never the most likely of culinary pairings....

Commenter Of The Day: Happy Birthday Ricardo Montalbán Edition [Commenter Of The Day]Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalbán, America's favorite Mexican actor of the 1970s, turned 88 today and we'd like to take this COTD opportunity to wish him a happy birthday. Few actors from the era have their own Jalopnik tag page, but here it is. Thanks to this now infamous Cordoba commercial, every Cordoba post we do requires a Montálban joke and we're grateful to the actor for being a good sport about it and, of course, for the Corinthian leather. You're the best Ricardo. Even when you play Kahn. We have to thank LTD Scott and his love for the GAZ...

Life On Mars Travels In Time And Continues For Four More Episodes [Life On Mars]Somewhat lost in the midst of the bad Pushing Daisies news was the news that ABC's time-traveling 1970s lovefest Life on Mars has been confirmed to move behind Lost when the latter show returns on January 21st, and has also picked up an order for an additional four episodes. These two moves make it increasingly likely that the new series will, at least, make it to the end of its first season in one piece. [Hollywood Reporter]...

2009 Green Car Of The Year: The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Today, the Green Car Journal gave its 2009 Green Car of the Year award to the Volkswagen Jetta TDI at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2009 Jetta TDI is a quiet-running, diesel-powered car. It beat out hybrids and mini-cars to take the title. The Jetta uses a technology called "clean diesel" which actually lives up its name pretty well. It has a very clean tailpipe, and an EPA estimated 41 mpg highway fuel economy. The diesel fuel burns 98.5% cleaner than vehicles in the 1970s, and thus produc......
