Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We've seen a few Alameda Cougars so far, including this '67 (which later turned up in the wrecking yard), this '68, this '73, and this '75. Now we're going to look at a first-gen Cougar that's lived in the same neighborhood since I was a kid. It's got a very 1970s two-tone paint job, which has taken some punishment from the California sun, but it still looks pretty good and it gets its owner to work...
Filed under: Grains, Recipes, Newspapers Farro (emmer wheat) and spelt are not the same thing, as this New York Times essay amusingly points out. While farro cooks like pasta, high-protein spelt needs waaaay more time and love to become edible. So what is spelt, that oft-mocked hippie grain, good for? Apparently those brick-like 1970s "health loves" have gone the way of the Earth Shoe, and the new generation of spelt bread is like wheat bread but with a tougher crust. And spelt flour can be made to make genuinely edible pancakes, pizza dough, pasta and crackers as well. Plus, for...
Apartment Therapy found a fantastic LIFE magazine photo series from the 1970s of rock stars at home with their folks. Above is Frank Zappa. Also included are the likes of David Crosby, Grace Slick, Donovan, Jackson 5, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. "Look! 70's Rock Musicians and Their Parent's Homes" (Thanks, Richard Metzger!)...
Rickrolling was taken to the largest audience yet Thursday at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. Instead of a performance by the characters of “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” onlookers were treated to a rendition of “Never Gonna Give You Up” by singer Rick Astley. The switch happened on Thursday morning, during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The puppets on the float featuring the Cartoon Network show began to sing 1970s hit and TV theme song “Best Friend,” but stopped abruptly, revealing Astley, himself, dancing and singing to his signature tune. Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalbán, America's favorite Mexican actor of the 1970s, turned 88 today and we'd like to take this COTD opportunity to wish him a happy birthday. Few actors from the era have their own Jalopnik tag page, but here it is. Thanks to this now infamous Cordoba commercial, every Cordoba post we do requires a Montálban joke and we're grateful to the actor for being a good sport about it and, of course, for the Corinthian leather. You're the best Ricardo. Even when you play Kahn. We have to thank LTD Scott and his love for the GAZ...
Today, the Green Car Journal gave its 2009 Green Car of the Year award to the Volkswagen Jetta TDI at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2009 Jetta TDI is a quiet-running, diesel-powered car. It beat out hybrids and mini-cars to take the title. The Jetta uses a technology called "clean diesel" which actually lives up its name pretty well. It has a very clean tailpipe, and an EPA estimated 41 mpg highway fuel economy. The diesel fuel burns 98.5% cleaner than vehicles in the 1970s, and thus produc......
