Is Angel Investing Dead?Image via WikipediaAmazing,  the optimism in Silicon Valley compared to the rest of the country. The angel climate cannot be said to be good, but it doesn't sound too bad compared to, say, the Big 3 automakers. It's much cheaper for a company to start up and keep running today, because the price of technology has gone down. If the company has started, and does have some traction, prices are low, and buyers will come in to the market and make small acquisitions. There will be exits. This was difficult for me to grok, but when you listen to investors...

32.1m MP3 players sold in the UK last year. Huh?Keen to push its new MP3 kitemark, the Entertainment Retailers Association released figures today trumpeting the format in grand terms: "Never in the history of the music business have we seen a format take off like this before. There is now no doubt that MP3 is the fastest-growing music format of all time, faster than vinyl, cassette or CD," said chairman Russel Coultart.Photograph: rudolf_schuba/Flickr/Some rights reservedSome clever presentation of the facts has allowed them to announce that 32.1m MP players were sold last year, according to market research by GfK. But actually 75% of those were MP3-enabled mobile phones, so...

An Epiphany On The Drug WarThis is a stirring call for reform: The US is now a carceral state that imprisons eight to 12 times more people (2.5m) per capita than the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany or Japan. US justice has become a command economy based on the avarice of private prison companies, a gigantic prison service industry and politically influential correctional officers’ unions that agitate for an unlimited increase in the number of prosecutions and the length of sentences. The entire “war on drugs”, by contrast, is a classic illustration of supply-side economics: a trillion taxpayers’ dollars squandered and 1m small fry imprisoned...

Mobile penetration ekes up to 70% in Canada, still sucksNew stats are out on wireless penetration in Canada. ” A new Harris/Decima survey finds that 72% of Canadian households now have access to a wireless phone, up from 64% in 2006. Commissioned by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA)” it gets better “Canadians continue to be some of the most enthusiastic mobile phone users in the world” said Bernard Lord, CWTA President and CEO. Than you Bernard, give us a second while we try and mop up the vomit of sycophantic incredulity now splattered down our shirt fronts. As we work on that, how about a wirelessnorth challenge? We...

Is App Verification Really a Money Tree for Facebook? When Facebook launched the app verification program a couple of days ago, some people claimed that Facebook had created a “serious revenue machine.” Mike Arrington wrote, If every application applied, that would be $18 million in incremental revenue to Facebook. Our guess is half or more will apply. While important questions should be asked about how the details of the benefits of program are implemented when it actually goes live, I believe that claims that the app verification program is a new money tree for Facebook are a little exaggerated. If Facebook makes $9 million over the next year from...

The 2,788 sq ft three-bedroomed property, which is at the apex of the 25-storey Orion Building, offers views across the West Midlands and was sold to an unnamed executive in his 30s, topping the previous record for an apartment in the city by £125,000....

Marc Jacobs Pays $1M Fine for Bribing State OfficialIn February of this year, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo crashed Fashion Week and announced an indictment against the former superintendent of the 26th Street Armory who solicited bribes from designer Marc Jacobs. Now TMZ reports that Cuomo has brought his wrath upon Jacobs himself, you know, "for bribing a State official so he could get a desirable venue for his fashion show." Marc Jacobs International has now admitted their guilt and agreed to pay a $1 million fine. The Observer points out that a company spokesperson noted they are “pleased that this matter has been resolved. We have already...

Park Concerts to Fill Park Coffers [image courtesy flickr photog davitydave] The experiment apparently succeeded, but the $815,000 fee the Recreation and Parks Department collected from August's Outside Lands clusterfuckconcert won't fly next year. The department is looking to make at least a cool $1M on concerts held in the park in the coming years by upping their organizer fees and adding a surcharge to tickets. And yes, there will be more nighttime concerts held in Golden Gate Park in the coming years, and no, none of those moneys will be spent to smooth Muni service or traffic when upwards of 125,000 people are flooding...

Villagers raise £1m to save castleHopton A 12th-century castle that was the scene of a notorious massacre in the English Civil War has been saved from dereliction after villagers bought it. Hopton Castle, in the Shropshire village of the same name, was crumbling when locals set up the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust and raised £1 million, including a lottery grant. The trust took ownership of the castle this week and hopes to restore it and open it to the public. In 1644 Royalist forces seized the castle and killed 28 Puritan prisoners. Anne Crosby, of the trust, said: “It would have been a tragedy if...
