Review: Lexar Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi memory card By now most of you have heard of the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi SD memory card and what it’s capable of, right? Okay, good. Earlier this year, January to be exact, Lexar announced that they had teamed up with Eye-Fi to bring a Lexar branded SD card with Eye-Fi technology by year’s end. Well, the time has come — Lexar’s Shoot-n-Sync card is finally here and I’ve been testing it out for the last couple weeks. It rocks, but it does have a hangup or two. From a casual point-and-shooter’s perspective I doubt you’d have any real qualms about performance, but...

Getting Fired At Yahoo: A Twitter Log Reprised (YHOO)Last February, a Yahoo named Ryan Kuder was caught in the first wave of Yahoo (YHOO) downsizing. Refusing to be laid low by his luck, however, he generously captured his experience on a new medium--Twitter--and let the rest of us listen in. Ryan, we hope, has moved on to a better life. And as thousands of Yahoos worldwide (including ourselves) shrink into the fetal postion in preparation for Wednesday's bloodletting, we thought it made sense to revisit Ryan's work of literature below. And we hereby promise that, should we get a visit from the grim Yahoo reaper on Wednesday morning,...

A new wind for MSI's netbooks: 2GB, WiFi-n, less power consumptionMSI is to offer new netbooks: the Wind U110, U115 and U120. The U120 is much the same as the original U100, but with 3G built-in. It's the other two that do clever things with the standard netbook loadout, though all remain stuck with a 600-line display. Here's a bullet list: • Options for 2GB of RAM. • The Z530, a more expensive version of Intel's Atom CPU, which uses 20% less power. • A new chipset that uses less power. • 6-cell battery as standard. • Hybrid flash/spinning storage, also said to use less power. The holy grail is...

Two Free Accessories With Flip MinoHD At AmazonThrough December 31, 2008 at Amazon, buy a Flip MinoHD camcorder and receive two free accessories. Flip really changed the market with their small, relatively inexpensive camcorders which are tailored to creating online video. The original Flip Video recorded in 640×480 up to 60 minutes on 1GB internal memory. The follow-on Flip Video Ultra and Flip Mino also recorded VGA up to 60 minutes, but on 2GB - at a higher bitrate for higher quality. And now the Flip MinoHD records 1280×720 (720p), 60min on 4GB. You can compare the models online. I’m seriously considering picking up one of these,...

Bad economy good for client virtualization?Could the stretched-out replacement cycles for desktop machines be a boon for client computing? In a recent Wall Street Journal Business Technology blog post, Ben Worthen noted that a survey from our print publication, CIO Magazine, found that companies will forgo traditional three-year replacement cycles for desktop machines (both traditional desktops and notebook computers). According to the CIO survey, 46 percent of businesses will defer replacing machines for the next year or two.Worthen says that this will be a problem for people who are already suffering from overloaded machines, bogged down by big apps and too much data. I'm not...

New MacBook is worth consideration based on performance alone Two days ago, I took advantage of the special "Black Friday" pricing at Best Buy and nabbed a new 2.4GHz MacBook with 2GB of RAM for $150 off the list $1,599 price. I'm certainly glad I got the price discount and didn't have to battle the crowds later this week to get it. My first impression: it's always good to save money, but I think I would have been happy with this notebook at full price. Seriously... let me share just a few first thoughts so you understand where I'm coming from.As James pointed out in his first look,...

Swarovski Robot Happy Laura Flash Drive: Love It or Leave It?If you've been blissfully unaffected by the recession, then first of all, more power to you, and second of all, may I interest you in a $180 flash drive? The Swarovski crystal-covered Robot Happy Laura Flash Drive is cute but holds a paltry 2GB of data. But maybe you've got money to burn this holiday season and someone in mind who's a robot-freak geek who needs extra (but not very much extra) storage space. Economical wariness aside, what do you think of it? Swarovski Robot Happy Laura Flash Drive: Love It or Leave It? Love it! Leave it! I think...

Liquid nitrogen-cooled MSI Wind U100 overclocked to 2.3GHz When MSI rolled out its v1.09 BIOS, we're willing to wager it absolutely did not have anything like this in mind. The mad scientists in Team Australia are at it again, this time overclocking a netbook to the point (almost, anyway) of implosion. The unafraid members grabbed hold of a hopeless Wind U100 with 2GB of RAM, hooked up a little liquid nitrogen and proceeded to push the poor 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU to an amazing 2.385GHz. No telling how quickly the whole thing was over, but still, this is pretty ridiculous, mate.Filed under: LaptopsLiquid nitrogen-cooled MSI Wind U100...

We’re at the Motorola AURA launch! Later on today we’re at the launch event of the new handset from Moto, the AURA. If you weren’t already aware, and you will be by the end of reading this, it’s their designer mobile phone par excellence. We’ve been told it’s the world’s first 16 million colour, circular display with a 300 dpi resolution, and a 62 carat lens made from the most scratch resistant sapphire crystal on earth. Just in case that wasn’t enough and why stop there, it also has a stainless steel housing that’s been chemically etched and takes nearly two weeks to sculpt and...

An MP3 player in the shape of a nutAttention: Nextar has developed an mp3 player contrived to resemble a peanut. It comes in five colors, costs $20 for a 1GB model or $30 for 2GB, and is to be found at Staples and Kmart. I can think of a few things it resembles more than a peanut. MA588 [Nextar]...

Creative gives up, introduces the Zen Moo We're seen plenty of cheap plastic MP3 land-fillers in our day. But those usually originate from deep-down within the fetid bowels of some no-name manufacturing house in southeast Asia, not the once illustrious Creative. The Zen Moo (yes, Moo) appears to be be a Zen Stone with extra bits of plastic and paint added to achieve Cow. Like the Stone, you get a small OLED, 2GB of memory, 20 hours of playback, and FM tuner to the delight of kids across China (where the Zen Moo was announced) -- hey, it's never too early to destroy a child's hearing....

Let’s sWAP a watch for a phoneA watch phone is one piece of convergence consumer electronics that I don’t really agree with - it looks plain weird talking to your wrist (hence making a Bluetooth headset essential), and the screen is way to small to be of any productive use. Still, that hasn’t stopped people from coming out with a range of watch phones, and the sWAP is the latest in a long line. The sWaP Watch has turned the tables on our plucky pocket phone friend and has stolen all of its coolest functions. It not only tells the time, but the wearer can pop...

YouSendIt brings file delivery to Microsoft Office File delivery service YouSendIt announced Thursday that it has released a plug-in for Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 that will allow users to send any file from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint to recipients through the company's service. Based on my testing, the plug-in, which requires registration to download, works quite well. After surfing over to the company's plug-in page, which is already populated with other plug-ins for iPhoto, Outlook, Photoshop, and others, I downloaded the file in seconds. Once installed, the plug-in embeds itself in Microsoft Office. On my version of Office 2007, I found YouSendIt's plug-in added under...
