Join Jason Fried, founder of 37signals, as he demos Basecamp, Highrise, and Backpack at the Apple Store at 679 North Michigan Ave. in Chicago. January 13 at 7pm....
It’s hard work to set up and supervise a teleworking team for some projects. In the web content service I run, I need to gather work-from-home writers together and help them work as a team. This is especially important for projects that require group cooperation and interaction, such as an ebook or a multi-authored blog. One of the advantages of teleworking is that there’s less opportunities for workplace gossip and personality clashes. Most teams approach their communications very matter-of-factly. But I find that this isn’t always the case, especially when members each have very different working styles. When managing a...
Communicating your clients is a necessary evil of contract web development, design, programming, writing, or any other freelance art form. Some clients are great — they communicate what they need very clearly from the get-go and things go smoothly from spec through to delivery. Others, though, will make you want to pull out your hair in frustration. Our round up of ten must have web-based tools below will help you communicate with either type of client, and generally make things easier on you and help you keep your sanity. As always, if you have any other suggestions for apps that...
Carlos Bruscoli works at devego, a design/development company based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He wrote in to tell us why his team loves Basecamp and Highrise. Basically we make some websites and web apps for our costumers, and also we recently founded a startup, ( atommica ) in which we are cooking our own projects ( all of them mega-cool btw :) The keypoint here, is that we have a partnership with another agency in London, which works exclusively with print design, and we are providing this guys with the web-interactive part. Imagine the timezone differences, the normal problems that...
There are a number of microblogging engines in existence today that work the build-your-own angle of the market. The corporate and closed Yammer and the open source Laconi.ca are two such enablers. Well, today one more joins the fold. Its name is Twingr. It comes by way of Miami and the Startups.com network and its aim is to give anyone the ability to create free custom Twitter-like forums without having to do much legwork. Easy to Use Suffice it to say that the promise of an easy-to-use system is realized at Twingr quite strongly: - It sports a simple layout...
Before the recent financial crash, we wrote about growing investment around the programming framework Ruby on Rails. It looks those investments haven’t stopped yet – New Relic, a company that helps you manage Rails applications, has raised $6 million in a second round of funding. Dan Scholnick of Trinity Ventures, which led the round, says there are a bunch of reasons why New Relic seemed like a good investment, even as the economy crumbles. For one thing, interest in Rails (which gives developers speed and flexibility when building apps) continues to grow. The framework is even being used by big,...
New Relic, a company that focuses on helping Rails developers optimize and maintain their code, has closed a $6 million Series B funding round led by Trinity Ventures, with existing investor Benchmark Capital also participating. As part of the deal Trinity’s Dan Scholnick will be joining the New Relic board, with Benchmark Capital’s Peter Fenton taking the role of chairman of the board. New Relic offers subscription-based services for developers using the popular Ruby on Rails platform. The company’s Rails Performance Management (RPM) package helps developers test their code for performance issues, presenting data in an intuitive graphical interface....
Some recent posts at the 37signals Product Blog: Basecamp Versatility Skateboards: “Basecamp is the body of our business’s communications and Campfire is our brain” “Basecamp is the body of our business’s communications. Every project, from designing a new skateboard to planning a contest sponsorship, is tracked in Basecamp. Campfire is our brain. All three of us leave it up and running all day, which allows us the ability to brainstorm at the drop of a hat. The best feature of Campfire is that it’s logged and we can revisit the ideas we discussed 10 minutes, 10 days or 10 weeks...
I recently sat down with Troy Malone and Daniel Marashlian of Pelotonics, a San Diego based startup taking on the likes of 37signals with their group collaboration software, to get the scoop on their product for StartupSD. They’re certainly smart guys with a pretty impressive product, but I was completely blown away by their innovative approach to real-time interactive customer service. Malone and Marashlian, a part from being likable and incredibly hilarious (check out their Halloween costumes), are living and breathing the core of community building by making themselves entirely available to the users of their product. Their using Ustream.tv...
