Avoiding Conflicts Within a Teleworking TeamIt’s hard work to set up and supervise a teleworking team for some projects.  In the web content service I run, I need to gather work-from-home writers together and help them work as a team.  This is especially important for projects that require group cooperation and interaction, such as an ebook or a multi-authored blog. One of the advantages of teleworking is that there’s less opportunities for workplace gossip and personality clashes.  Most teams approach their communications very matter-of-factly.  But I find that this isn’t always the case, especially when members each have very different working styles. When managing a...

Ta-da List on Rails 2.2, Passenger And EC2Ta-da List just moved to three exciting platforms: Rails 2.2, Phusion Passenger, Amazon EC2. This is an important milestone for 37signals. As proponents of simplicity, we really felt the difference the latter two technologies made for server provisioning and deployment. As we grow more comfortable with these services, we’ll be moving other applications this way and writing more about the results. Phusion Passenger After we comissioned Phusion to add global queueing to Passenger, we felt it was time to give it a try. Since we were already on Apache, it proved a simple transition. We’re really impressed with the ease...

10 Must Have Tools for Communicating with ClientsCommunicating your clients is a necessary evil of contract web development, design, programming, writing, or any other freelance art form. Some clients are great — they communicate what they need very clearly from the get-go and things go smoothly from spec through to delivery. Others, though, will make you want to pull out your hair in frustration. Our round up of ten must have web-based tools below will help you communicate with either type of client, and generally make things easier on you and help you keep your sanity. As always, if you have any other suggestions for apps that...

[Case Study] devego: "Basecamp is the air we breathe everyday"Carlos Bruscoli works at devego, a design/development company based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He wrote in to tell us why his team loves Basecamp and Highrise. Basically we make some websites and web apps for our costumers, and also we recently founded a startup, ( atommica ) in which we are cooking our own projects ( all of them mega-cool btw :) The keypoint here, is that we have a partnership with another agency in London, which works exclusively with print design, and we are providing this guys with the web-interactive part. Imagine the timezone differences, the normal problems that...

Ask 37signals: Does "Getting Real" work in this economy?David asks: The recent economic downturn has me wondering… Are small ‘Getting Real’ businesses like 37signals more resistant to the declining economy or is it just that any downside is much less dramatic than multi billion dollar failures and job cuts in the thousands? Have you been impacted directly in reduced growth or increased cancellations as far as you can tell? How do most companies handle economic downturns? They keep a closer eye on spending, they cut back on hiring (or lay people off), they waste less time, they focus on their core competencies, they push to eliminate complexities, they...

There are a number of microblogging engines in existence today that work the build-your-own angle of the market. The corporate and closed Yammer and the open source Laconi.ca are two such enablers. Well, today one more joins the fold. Its name is Twingr. It comes by way of Miami and the Startups.com network and its aim is to give anyone the ability to create free custom Twitter-like forums without having to do much legwork. Easy to Use Suffice it to say that the promise of an easy-to-use system is realized at Twingr quite strongly: - It sports a simple layout...

New Relic raises $6M more to manage Ruby on Rails appsBefore the recent financial crash, we wrote about growing investment around the programming framework Ruby on Rails. It looks those investments haven’t stopped yet – New Relic, a company that helps you manage Rails applications, has raised $6 million in a second round of funding. Dan Scholnick of Trinity Ventures, which led the round, says there are a bunch of reasons why New Relic seemed like a good investment, even as the economy crumbles. For one thing, interest in Rails (which gives developers speed and flexibility when building apps) continues to grow. The framework is even being used by big,...

Product blog update: Versatility Skateboards case study, Open Bar video, etc. Some recent posts at the 37signals Product Blog: Basecamp Versatility Skateboards: “Basecamp is the body of our business’s communications and Campfire is our brain” “Basecamp is the body of our business’s communications. Every project, from designing a new skateboard to planning a contest sponsorship, is tracked in Basecamp. Campfire is our brain. All three of us leave it up and running all day, which allows us the ability to brainstorm at the drop of a hat. The best feature of Campfire is that it’s logged and we can revisit the ideas we discussed 10 minutes, 10 days or 10 weeks...

Describe 37signals in 20 seconds or lessWe’ve got a problem. We don’t know how to describe to average civilians just what it is that 37signals does. Like when we’re at a cocktail party and someone asks, “What does 37signals do?” The answer typically starts with “a web software company…” and goes to something like “that helps small businesses organize information…” and ends with the other person snoring. What do you think our hook should be for average people? What’s a good way to quickly describe what 37signals does that doesn’t put non-techies to sleep? How would you make what 37signals does sound interesting to civilians…in under...

Social Media Innovation - PeloTV and Customer Service 2.0I recently sat down with Troy Malone and Daniel Marashlian of Pelotonics, a San Diego based startup taking on the likes of 37signals with their group collaboration software, to get the scoop on their product for StartupSD. They’re certainly smart guys with a pretty impressive product, but I was completely blown away by their innovative approach to real-time interactive customer service. Malone and Marashlian, a part from being likable and incredibly hilarious (check out their Halloween costumes), are living and breathing the core of community building by making themselves entirely available to the users of their product. Their using Ustream.tv...

Target micromediaWhen it comes to spreading a story, the mainstream media isn’t as important as the micromedia. For us, being written up at the right blogs has had way more impact than press we’ve gotten in big circulation publications. Traditional media is losing ground 10 reasons why newspapers won’t reinvent news explains why papers are having a tough time keeping up with the web: Newsrooms don’t trail the leading edge simply because they’re too dumb to keep up…Most newspapers can’t see what’s coming…Most newspaper payrolls are bloated with pluralities of resentful Luddites who struggle with the complexities of e-mail…Inertia, uncertainty and...

Embrace real constraints, not artificial onesI’ve been doing research for my RubyConf presentation on November 6th, and while digging through one of my old projects, I ran into an interesting bit of code. The project in question was Needle, a result of a brief love affair with complexity. (This was before I met 37signals, and both 37signals and my wife have since forgiven me.) It was a fun project, but I added features because they “sounded cool”, not because I had any practical need for them. Adding new features always results in increased complexity. (For some features, the added complexity may be fairly small, but...
