Cooliris For iPhone: Surfing The Web With 3D ExperienceJackson has previously covered the Cooliris plugin for the various browsers. In this article, I would like to discuss more about Cooliris for the iPhone. For all those who are still not sure what Cooliris is, it is a browser plugin that enables you to surf the Web with a cinematic style. The wall on which it shows thumbnails of images, videos, news pulled from various sources and so on, allows you to be fully immersed in a 3D environment. You can easily surf the Web simply by dragging, sliding, clicking and selecting the thumbnails with your mouse. On the...

Mozilla: One Billion Addons Served - Here Are Some of Our FavoritesMozilla today announced that it has served its 1 billionth addon download since they started keeping track of these downloads in 2005. Currently, Mozilla's users are downloading close to 1.5 million addons every day. Mozilla has cultivated one of the most active and interesting developer communities around its products and seeing numbers like these will surely give a lot of other developers an incentive to try their hands at developing new plugins for Firefox as well. Sponsor Mozila also just released a new interface to showcase some of the top Firefox addons, which will surely bring a lot of new...

Amazon In 3D? Is That Useful? — Earlier this year, we talked about getting beyond the "webpage" metaphor when setting up online shopping experiences, and noted how Borders was testing a virtual bookshelf system that seemed more gimmicky than useful. Well, now it appears that Amazon has one-upped Borders by offering WindowShop, a 3D shopping experience... and once again I find myself underwhelmed. While it also has something of a shelf metaphor, it has some advantages in that clicking on any individual "product" can bring up audio, video and text about the product. However, it still feels rather gimmicky rather than useful. For years people have tried...

Windows only: Like the look of BumpTop but not part of the invite-only beta? Free application Shock Desktop 3D is a lightweight BumpTop alternative that turns your Windows desktop into a 3D environment where you can interact with your documents in a physical space. The video above—put together by reader y0himba—demonstrates some of Shock Desktop 3D's interface in action. If you like the look of BumpTop, Shock Desktop 3D looks like a nice alternative. With either option you'll need a decent video card and be willing to sacrifice a little memory (Shock Desktop 3D eats about 35MB on my system),...

Adding another dimension to your cityYour downtown is so much more than an address listing of the businesses in it. What if there were a way for someone to discover their new favorite bookstore, within easy walking distance of the parking garage, with a coffee shop next door and a kids' play area a block away, all at once? What if you could plan a walking tour of all the historic buildings downtown, and in the process discover that there's an ice cream parlor and a pottery shop that you just have to visit along the way? There's a way to do all these things,...

Have You Ever Wanted to be a 3D Game Developer? Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed When I was a kid, we had a Commodore 64 computer. The tools for game creation today are just so advanced and complex, right? Not necessarily, no. Alex sent me an email with a link to the Alice project. Alice is educational software that allows you to learn programming in a 3D environment. Alice is an...

Microsoft Launches Photosynth: Your Pictures in 3DTonight, Microsoft has publicly launched Photosynth, its long awaited Live Labs product that allows you to stitch your photos together to create a detailed 3D environment.  While most of the computation is done on your desktop, the images are uploaded to Microsoft's servers and Microsoft is giving all Photosynth users a total of 20GB of storage for their collections. The rendering and browsing is done with the help of Seadragon, another Live Labs product. Windows Only When Microsoft first publicly showed a demo of Photosynth in 2006, it almost looked too good to be true. Now, getting started with it...

Sosauce Hints at Amazing Future of Travel WebsitesToday we have an interesting piece of news from Sosauce, a travel startup we reviewed on Profy first when it launched back in May. At the time we called Sosauce a place to have a “really fantastic super travel journal” because the site provided all the functions a user could dream of to have a perfect travel journal - and even more so this explains some of the admiration in our description. The platform allows to record everything related to your travel experience - from the route to photos and journal - and place it all in one very comfortable...

The team behind the mind-blowing photo-stitching software, Photosynth, is back with even more explosives for your brain. As part of the SIGGRAPH 2008 conference in Los Angeles, the collaborative research team from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research showed off some changes and improvements that give Photosynth some even more stunning effects. The new technologies move beyond the initial idea of stitching individual photographs together in a 3D environment, and can now actually manipulate color and tone within the photos. It all sounds very technical and boring, but the results are amazing. Check out the video above and...

Uni. Washington and Microsoft Research collaborates on (yet another) mindblowing 3D photo viewerIf you think you’ve seen what’s possible with Photosynth, then you’ve seen nothing yet. The collaborative research team from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research who only two years ago in 2006 published their paper “Photo Tourism” and their technology demonstration “Photosynth” have again pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved by intuitively processing the abundance of digital images shared on the web. This week at SIGGRAPH 2008 they’re sharing with the world some even better technology they’ve been working on which they call “Finding Paths through the World’s Photos“. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s damn...
