Turning 3D SketchUp Models Into Reality Sweet Onion Creations is a company dealing with 3D printing. In the video, they show you how they load a model located in Google Earth (and perhaps available in the Google 3D Warehouse) into Google SketchUp, check it for integrity, and then print it. They describe the printing as follows: <<The process starts with a very fine white powder that resembles cornstarch in consistency. The toxicity is so low that it is almost food-grade in quality. On the computer, a house or hillside is sliced up digitally and made into an outline or “pancake.” From here it is fed...

New 3D Printer Models Guarantee Geekasm Bear with me folks: if you know anything about 3D modeling, then you know how complicated that process can be, especially when it involves unorthodox shapes that aren’t easily understood by the spatial mind. You then probably know how hard it is to get a 3D printer to produce these kind of shapes. 3D printers are basically a quick way to fabricate objects; you just provide it with a 3D model, and it gets to work, usually creating a real object based on the specs by packing power into the desired shape. It’s a quick way to produce an...

Windows 7, DirectX 11!New versions of Windows have featured new versions of DirectX, the 3D audio and graphics family of APIs, and it now appears that Windows 7 will be no exception. According to PC Games Hardware, Microsoft's Ben Basaric, Product Marketing Manager Windows, says that Redmond will be bundling DirectX 11 with Windows 7, after all. Earlier this week, PCGH had reported that the pairing of DirectX 11 and Windows 7 was "unlikely." So, what's new in DirectX 11? As we reported this summer, DX 11 will include compute shader technology, enabling the GPU to perform operations other than 3D graphics; better...

Wolfram Research Releases Mathematica 7mblase writes "Wolfram Research has released the seventh version of Mathematica, and it does a lot more than symbolic algebra. New features range from things as simple as cut-and-paste integration with Microsoft Word's Equation Editor to instant 3D models of mathematical objects to the most expensive clone of Photoshop ever. Full suites of genome, chemical, weather, astronomical, financial, and geodesic data (or support for same) is designed to make Mathematica as invaluable for scientific research as it is for mathematics."Read more of this story at Slashdot....

Introducing SketchUp 7We're very excited to announce the new release of Google SketchUp 7. If you don't already know about the fun you can have with SketchUp, here's a quick recap:SketchUp is software you can use to build 3D models of anything: your house, killer robots, furniture, trees, abstract art — anything. Architects and engineers use it to design buildings and other structures. Woodworkers use it to plan their projects. And lots of people use it to figure out where to put their furniture. SketchUp is easy to learn, it comes in free and Pro versions, and it's more fun than a...

Google SketchUp 7 wants to make you an artist Google announced Monday that it has released SketchUp 7, the newest free version of its 3D modeling software, along with its paid version, SketchUp 7 Pro. Like previous iterations of the software, SketchUp 7 will still allow you to model just about anything you'd like as long as you start with a pre-designed template. The software offers simple templates that help you gauge size through feet or meters, but it also includes architectural design, Google Earth, and a product design template to aide you in your modeling endeavors. (Credit: Google) Once you choose a template, you're brought to a...

When in Rome...teach!Yesterday, we introduced the new Ancient Rome 3D layer in Google Earth, a groundbreaking collection of 6,700 3D buildings modeled as leading scholars determined they stood in the year 320 A.D. While we hope that teachers are already pretty excited to incorporate Ancient Rome 3D into their lessons, we wanted to go a step further and issue an open challenge to educators to harness the power of this new tool in the classroom. Today, we're proud to announce the launch of the inaugural Google lesson plan contest for K-12 educators in the US, the Ancient Rome in 3D Curriculum Competition. Whether you teach art history to...

Mcor 3D printer threatens oragami artists everywhere Mcor Technologies, an Irish company founded in 2004, is rolling out their Matrix 3D printer.  What makes this 3D printer special, though, is that it uses plain old sheets of A4 paper to print your 3D models. “Loosely based on the LOM (Laminated Object Manufacture) method of rapid prototyping, A4 pages are glued together to form a 3D part”. Why paper?  According to Mcor, the “current ‘cost of ownership’ of a 3D printer is high due to the recurring costs of consumables”.  By using paper you can get at the local office supply store, the cost per cubic centimeter...

3D Printer Feeds On Paper and Glue The two 3D models you see above are made from office paper. The one on the right cost $1 in parts to produce. The one on the left, just 37¢. They were spat out by a new 3D printer called the Matrix, from British company Mcor. The principle is elegantly simple. The printer takes standard sheets of printer paper (A4 size) and deposits regular old PVA glue in a pattern determined by the design. Another sheet of paper is added, and a tungsten carbide blade cuts away the excess paper, like Michelangelo freeing a sculpture from a block of...

Ultimate Perv Tech Creates Model of Your Naked Body Using Photo of You Fully Clothed [Peeping]Have you ever wondered what somebody looks like under their clothes? I'm guessing you have! Well, so have researchers at Brown University. That's why they've developed some fancy software that creates models of what people look like naked based only on pictures of them in their clothes. Awesome? The researchers claim that the technology is designed for people like forensic detectives and fashion designers, but I can see through that pretty easily. That's like Google claiming that private browsing is used for buying people gifts: unless those gifts are gifts of porn, that's not what anyone will use it for....

Video: Alaris 30 3D Printer's Awesome Results —  Too cool. On Wednesday we gave you a glimpse of the new Objet Alaris 30 desktop 3D printer. That's right -- a $40,000 printer capable of processing 3D CAD images and carving them into polymer models. The video above shows a model car produced by the Alaris 30. The wheels even spin -- giving you an idea of how the "printer" gets everything down to the nitty gritty details. The machine works by jetting photopolymer materials in thin layers onto a tray one a time, according to its manufacturer Objet. Each layer is cured immediately with a UV light,...

Objet Desktop Printer Churns Out 3D Models Forget about 3D cameras and TVs for a second and imagine a machine that spits out any object on your computer screen. Industrial designers can do that in their offices now with a desktop printer that launched today: The Alaris 30 Desktop 3D, which processes a 3D CAD file and carves out a polymer model of the image. The machine will streamline prototype production for industrial designers, who in the past were relying on machine shops to produce prototypes of their designs. That spells out less time between the conception of a new gadget to its actual creation. The...
