Economy Slows, PrePaid Mobile GrowsLast week, Stacey came up with five reasons to consider prepaid mobile phone calling plans, especially in these tough economic times. Some wondered why we wrote about that topic, and to them we say: look at the recent trends. There is growing body of evidence that the demand for wireless services is dipping, especially in the growth of post-paid subscriptions, a trend that was first evidenced in the 3Q 2008 and has continued since then. Service Providers New Pre-Paid Adds MetroPCS 249,000 Leap Wireless 155,000 T-Mobile 377,000 Tracfone 341,000 Verizon Wireless 90,000 On the flip side, there is a growing...

Economy's tumble even worse than expected in 3Q — WASHINGTON — The economy took a tumble in the summer that was worse than first thought as American consumers throttled back their spending by the most in 28 years, further proof the country is almost certainly in the throes of a painful recession. The updated reading on the economy's performance, released Tuesday by the Commerce Department, showed the gross domestic product shrank at a 0.5 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter. That was weaker than the 0.3 percent rate of decline first estimated a month ago, and marked the worst showing since the economy contracted at a 1.4 percent...

BlackBerry Storm To Be Released November 21 For $199 — It's official: Verizon Wireless will start selling RIM's (RIMM) new touchscreen BlackBerry Storm on Nov. 21. The iPhone-ish smartphone will sell for $199.99 after subsidy and a $50 mail-in rebate, assuming you are eligible and sign a two-year contract. This is an important launch for both companies, as Apple (AAPL) beat RIM in unit shipments last quarter, and Verizon (VZ) hasn't yet had a credible answer to the iPhone. However, this is hardly an aggressive play. We think Apple still has the upper hand. We had read rumors that Verizon Wireless was considering selling the Storm for free after subsidy,...

Ford Announces $129M In Third Quarter Losses, Forecasts Job Cuts [Industry News]Ford has announced third quarter losses of $129 million after pre-tax losses of a total of $2.7 billion. These results are an improvement from the company's $380 million loss in the third quarter of last year. This news comes after a quarter ravaged by the twin problems of high gasoline prices and overall economic doldrums, but Ford's budget bright spot was a $2.3 billion reduction in retiree health care costs. So no layoffs, right? Not exactly. Unfortunately these figures will likely lead to a forecasted 10% cut in salaried workforce along with no executive bonuses or merit pay. With about...

Once Hot Harlem Condo Market is Getting ColdPropertyShark analyzed Harlem condo sales data, finding a 76% drop in sales between third quarter 2008 and 3Q 2007. Oddly enough, prices increased 3% in 3Q 2008 vs. 3Q 2007. The Observer remarks upon "oversaturation in the Harlem condo market," and PropertyShark CEO Bill Staniford says, "This almost looks like a complete crash; prices are going to have to drop." However, there could be a bright side: The "possibility of substantial Harlem and East Harlem price chops has potential apartment buyers giddy at the reintroduction of a nearly extinct New York species: the newer $300,000 (and under) Manhattan condo." (Curbed...
