The TG Lluon Mobbit PS400 MID Say what you want, but I think Mobbit is the perfect name for a MID somehow. It just sounds right in my weird little brain. Is that a Mobbit in your pocket? Well, enough of that. The TG Lluon Mobbit PS400 MID. Set to ship in January 2009, the Mobbit is running some sort of shell over XP on an Atom Z520 platform. It has a 4.8 inch touchscreen LCD and has either a 30GB HDD or a 16GBSSD. Of course WiFi, WiBro, T-DMB TV, camera (2megapixel), and 1GB of memory. CNET points out the price point of $411...

Trigem's Atom-based LLUON Mobbit crashes below the $500 UMPC sweet spot You know what we could really use right now? A chunky slab of XP running on a device that is simultaneously too big for our pockets but less functional than a netbook. Oh, what's that Trigem, you've got that? Suweet. Meet the LLUON Mobbit PS400, an Atom Z520-powered UMPC MID with a 4.8-inch (1,024 x 600) touchscreen LCD, 2 megapixel camera, 1GB memory, choice of 30GB hard disk or 16GB SSD, WiFi, and Korean WiMax (WiBro) and digital television (T-DMB). Here's the interesting part: the price. According CNET, it will cost "around" $411 (600,000 won) when it ships in...

Calling 411 Is Free, If You Know Where To Look So you don’t have an iPhone or other web-enabled phone, you’re away from your computer and you’re tired of shelling out your precious greenbacks for 411 services; is there any other option? Well, you could just keep on calling 411, the phone companies love it when you do that – a quick check reveals that Verizon charges $1.49 per call and both AT&T and Sprint charge a piggy bank busting $1.79 per call – or you could give Google or Microsoft a call, they’ll take care of you for free. Google’s service, “GOOG-411” can be accessed by calling 1-800-GOOG-411,...

In 2002, Google Labs introduced a service that allowed you to search Google with a simple phone call. Unfortunately, the service wasn't very useful because the results were displayed on your computer and Google discontinued it.Six years later, Google Mobile App for iPhone introduces the same feature, but this time the search results are displayed in the same application. Google built a sophisticated platform for text-to-speech and speech recognition using data from GOOG-411 and we can already some of its applications in Mobile Google Apps and YouTube....

Apptera secures $10.5 million for advertising network expansion Apptera, a company that delivers visual and voice advertising, announced Wednesday that it secured $10.5 million in funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures, and Walden International. The company also announced that former Yahoo senior executive, David Karnstedt, joined its board of directors. According to the company, the new investment will be used to expand its mobile advertising network and improve its MobileAd Xchange program, which allows advertisers to reach mobile phone users. Apptera has partnered with AT&T, AOL, and other technology platforms to deliver its ads and claims that it currently serves millions of advertisements each month. Most...

Mobile advertising network Apptera has closed a $10.5 million funding round led by Alloy Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Walden International. The company is also announcing that David Karnstedt, Yahoo’s former SVP of North American Sales who has extensive experience in advertising, has joined its board. Apptera offers a suite of audio and visual advertising solutions for companies looking to place ads on mobile devices. The company is behind many of the voice ads when you hear on free 411 services, as well as the ads found on AOL’s Moviefone. The company estimates that its ads reach over 100...

Google Voice Search: not just web search but Contacts too News broke last week that Google would be adding voice search capabilities to the iPhone and the app is now appearing in the iTunes AppStore. I gave it a download earlier this morning but want to clarify one bit. The application isn't a standalone app that solely provides voice search capabilities. You'll want to download the Google Mobile App, which is the suite of Google Apps that includes: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Talk, Reader, GOOG-411, News, Notebook, Photos, orkut, Translate, Maps, YouTube, and Google Earth. I tested around a dozen voice searches with the app and came away pretty impressed...

Oh, Google was doing an Apple a favor w/ the voice search app?So last week a lot of excitement was generated with an NYTimes piece on a new search app for the iPhone that Google was putting out. Seems like this bad boy was going to let users ask their questions and Google was going to put that 411 learnin’ to use with some fancy voice recognition to return some relevant (and localized thanks to the iPhone’s location awareness) results. The difficulty came as the piece suggested it may have been Apple approved as early as last friday. It’s unclear if Google actually got an official friday confirmation from Apple, an unofficial...

I can’t wait to get the Google iPhone app that answers questions asked by voice: Tim O’Reilly called this one a year and a half ago, I think, when he said that GOOG-411’s core purpose or fringe benefit was that Google would harvest our voice samples and out of them create the best voice recognition online. Now Google can answer any question we ask (we’ll see how well it works sometime today). This is about mobile, of course. Eric Schmidt told Jim Cramer a few weeks ago that in the future, Google will make more from mobile than from the...

New Google App Lets You Bark Orders Through IPhoneAccording to several sources, Google is set to release an iPhone app that allows you to speak your Google queries through the phone. Google then sends search results back in text. The application is set to be released on the App Store Friday. It’s not the first time Google has made speech queries accessible. Earlier this year, Google announced GOOG-411, a telephone based information service that uses Google results (as a side note, even my home telephone has a GOOG-411 fast dial button built into it). However, the immediate reaction to the application is of its questionable usage. Questions like:...

Google Launches Voice Recognition Search for Apple iPhoneGoogle search has now added voice recognition software to their search application on Apple iPhones. Now, iPhone users can request Google results without having to type information on their phones, a must for drivers or those on the go … aren’t phones for speaking and listening anyway? Google iPhone spoken search will be made available to Apple iPhone and iPod users today via the Apple iTunes store, and will let users ask questions that are not only local directory sensitive (like the 1-800-GOOG-411 experiment) but also basic search questions which request facts or figures. (more…)...

Google To Introduce Voice Search on iPhone, Hopefully It Will WorkHave you ever thought about doing some really quick search on your cell phone when on the go to find some place or store nearby but thought it was too difficult (and not really quick) to type all the letters to get the answer to your quick question? I do believe the answer will be positive for many of us and now we have Google addressing this particular need on one particular phone - that is Apple’s iPhone. New Your Times reports that Google has built an update to its search application for Apple iPhone that is promised to make...

Google to enable voice search on the iPhoneGoogle is expected to unveil a voice-based search capability later today - and use the iPhone to showcase the technology. The new service is built on top of an experimental voice-activated yellow pages telephony service called GOOG-411 that leverages voice input for the search of local businesses. The application is apparently part of a much broader technology initiative aimed at enriching services with advanced voice-recognition capabilities....

Google's iPhone app gets a voice: YoursGoogle on Tuesday released version two of its mobile search application for the iPhone. The new version works much like the old one, letting users query Google outside of the mobile Safari Web browser, as well as search through contacts and narrow down results by their current location. The big change is the addition of search-by-voice, which lets you skip the keyboard entirely. Google has found a really neat way to distinguish between voice and keyboard input. Using the phone's accelerometer and proximity sensors, it can tell when you're lifting the phone up to your face. Once you do, all...

Dow Falls Over 400 Points Photograph of job seekers outside a Monster.com job fair in midtown by Kathy Willens/AP The Dow tumbled 411 points (down 4.73%) while the Nasdaq fell 5.17% and S&P 500 fell 5.19%. According to the NY Times, "Wall Street spent the day looking at Washington for guidance, and investors did not like what they saw, analysts said." The chief economist at Moody's, Marc Zandi, further explained, “Wall Street is increasingly taking its cues from D.C. Policymakers are deciding who survives and who doesn’t.” And, therefore, when Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson explained the change of plans for a chunk of the...

2.7 OverdoseAs you can probably tell from the title, this episode features quite a bit of discussion surrounding WordPress 2.7. Not to worry though as there are plenty of other things that Keith and I discuss such as our favorite feature in WordPress 2.7 Beta 1, the WordPress showcase, whether or not Drupal can beat WordPress, and near the end of the show, Anthony Cole called in and gave us the 411 on WordCamp Australia which is taking place on November 29th and November 30th. Amazon’s Windowshop, it’s the thought that countsGot back from upstate to Ben giving me the 411 on Amazon’s Windowshop. Then I saw that it was all over my feeds. I poked around the site a little bit and thought it was pretty neat. To be honest, though, I’m not sure how often I’ll be heading there. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth checking out - it’s an interesting grid browser for new and promotable stuff like books, movies, video games, etc… very easy, very intuitive. Gives you video where appropriate, audio almost all the time and some extra text. From the various reviews I’ve read...

There are times when my country pisses me off but there are other times when it; and its often laid back people, make me proud as hell. This is one of those other times and it comes due to a landmark decision handed down today by British Columbia Supreme Court judge Stephen Kelleher in the case of Crookes v p2pnet.  The case was centered around the charge by Wayne Crookes that Ted Nelson who owns p2pnet had defamed him by linking to articles that Crookes apparently didn’t like. The judge ruled that in the case of it just being a link...
