You know what we could really use right now? A chunky slab of XP running on a device that is simultaneously too big for our pockets but less functional than a netbook. Oh, what's that Trigem, you've got that? Suweet. Meet the LLUON Mobbit PS400, an Atom Z520-powered UMPC MID with a 4.8-inch (1,024 x 600) touchscreen LCD, 2 megapixel camera, 1GB memory, choice of 30GB hard disk or 16GB SSD, WiFi, and Korean WiMax (WiBro) and digital television (T-DMB). Here's the interesting part: the price. According CNET, it will cost "around" $411 (600,000 won) when it ships in...
In 2002, Google Labs introduced a service that allowed you to search Google with a simple phone call. Unfortunately, the service wasn't very useful because the results were displayed on your computer and Google discontinued it.Six years later, Google Mobile App for iPhone introduces the same feature, but this time the search results are displayed in the same application. Google built a sophisticated platform for text-to-speech and speech recognition using data from GOOG-411 and we can already some of its applications in Mobile Google Apps and YouTube....
Apptera, a company that delivers visual and voice advertising, announced Wednesday that it secured $10.5 million in funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures, and Walden International. The company also announced that former Yahoo senior executive, David Karnstedt, joined its board of directors. According to the company, the new investment will be used to expand its mobile advertising network and improve its MobileAd Xchange program, which allows advertisers to reach mobile phone users. Apptera has partnered with AT&T, AOL, and other technology platforms to deliver its ads and claims that it currently serves millions of advertisements each month. Most...
Mobile advertising network Apptera has closed a $10.5 million funding round led by Alloy Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Walden International. The company is also announcing that David Karnstedt, Yahoo’s former SVP of North American Sales who has extensive experience in advertising, has joined its board. Apptera offers a suite of audio and visual advertising solutions for companies looking to place ads on mobile devices. The company is behind many of the voice ads when you hear on free 411 services, as well as the ads found on AOL’s Moviefone. The company estimates that its ads reach over 100...
News broke last week that Google would be adding voice search capabilities to the iPhone and the app is now appearing in the iTunes AppStore. I gave it a download earlier this morning but want to clarify one bit. The application isn't a standalone app that solely provides voice search capabilities. You'll want to download the Google Mobile App, which is the suite of Google Apps that includes: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Talk, Reader, GOOG-411, News, Notebook, Photos, orkut, Translate, Maps, YouTube, and Google Earth. I tested around a dozen voice searches with the app and came away pretty impressed...
According to several sources, Google is set to release an iPhone app that allows you to speak your Google queries through the phone. Google then sends search results back in text. The application is set to be released on the App Store Friday. It’s not the first time Google has made speech queries accessible. Earlier this year, Google announced GOOG-411, a telephone based information service that uses Google results (as a side note, even my home telephone has a GOOG-411 fast dial button built into it). However, the immediate reaction to the application is of its questionable usage. Questions like:...
Have you ever thought about doing some really quick search on your cell phone when on the go to find some place or store nearby but thought it was too difficult (and not really quick) to type all the letters to get the answer to your quick question? I do believe the answer will be positive for many of us and now we have Google addressing this particular need on one particular phone - that is Apple’s iPhone. New Your Times reports that Google has built an update to its search application for Apple iPhone that is promised to make...
Google on Tuesday released version two of its mobile search application for the iPhone. The new version works much like the old one, letting users query Google outside of the mobile Safari Web browser, as well as search through contacts and narrow down results by their current location. The big change is the addition of search-by-voice, which lets you skip the keyboard entirely. Google has found a really neat way to distinguish between voice and keyboard input. Using the phone's accelerometer and proximity sensors, it can tell when you're lifting the phone up to your face. Once you do, all...
Photograph of job seekers outside a Monster.com job fair in midtown by Kathy Willens/AP The Dow tumbled 411 points (down 4.73%) while the Nasdaq fell 5.17% and S&P 500 fell 5.19%. According to the NY Times, "Wall Street spent the day looking at Washington for guidance, and investors did not like what they saw, analysts said." The chief economist at Moody's, Marc Zandi, further explained, “Wall Street is increasingly taking its cues from D.C. Policymakers are deciding who survives and who doesn’t.” And, therefore, when Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson explained the change of plans for a chunk of the...
As you can probably tell from the title, this episode features quite a bit of discussion surrounding WordPress 2.7. Not to worry though as there are plenty of other things that Keith and I discuss such as our favorite feature in WordPress 2.7 Beta 1, the WordPress showcase, whether or not Drupal can beat WordPress, and near the end of the show, Anthony Cole called in and gave us the 411 on WordCamp Australia which is taking place on November 29th and November 30th. There are times when my country pisses me off but there are other times when it; and its often laid back people, make me proud as hell. This is one of those other times and it comes due to a landmark decision handed down today by British Columbia Supreme Court judge Stephen Kelleher in the case of Crookes v p2pnet. The case was centered around the charge by Wayne Crookes that Ted Nelson who owns p2pnet had defamed him by linking to articles that Crookes apparently didn’t like. The judge ruled that in the case of it just being a link...
