According to Compete.com Facebook grew 10 percent to just under 50 million visitors in the United States versus MySpace who reached approximately 56.5 million visitors. At this rate Facebook will overtake MySpace for the largest social network in the United States within the next month or two. US Army develops video game to curb suicide rates The Army wants to curb rising suicide rates using an unlikely tool: video games. The game, which plays like an interactive move, is called "Beyond the Front," lets players make decisions for the game's main character, a soldier. In one situation the soldier has to help a fellow soldier considering suicide. In another, a soldier who is having a difficult time must decide whether or not to confide in family and friends. The game is designed with the hope that soldiers who play it will make better choices in real life concerning depression and thoughts of suicide. "One suicide...

Farming And Chemical Warfare: A Day In The Life Of An AntOne of the most important developments in human civilization was the practice of sustainable agriculture. But we were not the first; ants have been doing it for over 50 million years. Just as farming helped humans become a dominant species, it has also helped leaf-cutter ants become dominant herbivores and one of the most successful social insects in nature....

The debate about Netbooks, which are very small and very cheap laptop devices, is beginning to heat up. The category is only about a year old but sales are expected to top 5 million this year. Lots of people think Netbooks are the next big volume market because they allow people who previously couldn’t afford computers to own one. People got so bullish on the devices that sales projections reached 50 million units by 2012. I’ve had a chance to test many of the units, though, and I can say that the promise is much bigger than the payoff. Perhaps...
I find the 10" screen on my Lenovo S10 to be very usable. Yes the 600 vertical pixels is a little restrictive, solution for browsing use Firefox and hit F11 to use all of the screen real estate. The 85% keyboard takes a little while to get used to also but not that big a deal. (I used to touch type on a Psion 3a!) I do not think the S10 is at all underpowered for general web and office app use. It is powerful enough to play 720P video without dropping frames and can even run Lightroom! The slight compromises one must adjust to with a netbook are a small price to pay for light weight and portability. Yes there are compromises, but I think they are worth it. - Jeff P. Henderson
I also might point out that in my case my netbbook is by no means my primary computer. It is my 3rd machine, behind my Quad core desktop with a 24" wide screen monitor and my Dell Laptop with a 15.4" wide screen display. I use my netbook primarily for reading my RSS feeds, email and browsing Friendfeed. - Jeff P. Henderson
I have to disagree with most parts of this post. You should check out the Asus N10 series (the kind i have). The 10.2" screen is much better than my Toshiba 15.4" screen. It runs HD movies smoothly and plays Call Of Duty 5 amazingly. It even runs Crisis very well. With wireless n technology plus Bluetooth and Express Card, together with HDMI port 3 USB hubs and Linux Express Gate system combined with the XP Pro...this is the ultimate machine. - Nir Ben Yona
The 10 inch machines generally have 92% keyboards, which are way better than the smaller ones. I still think the screens are too small for effective browsing, however. And even the Atom 1.7 just doesn't work that well when you ask it to do anything hard. - michael arrington
I was thinking of getting one once win7 comes out. I can't go back to XP and Ubuntu isn't for me. Obviously Vista is not an option. - Ajai
They'd solve a lot of problems if they increased the DPI of the screens, like iPhone does. - Aaron deMello
Speaking about browsing the net, I surf for hours with my N10 without any problems. As for spreadsheet working, I tend to prefer the 15.4-inch display. - Nir Ben Yona
Good enough for whom and what purpose? Good enough for me, and selling like hotcakes - Jeff McNeill
all netbooks have wifi, it isn't a netbook otherwise. there were a few with vista, but the market has settled on xp as well as 10 inch screens. makes no sense to review aa 7 inch, again they're being phased out. battery life is what makes these machines a breakthrough. - Dave Winer
and where is the techcrunch tablet? - gregory lent
good question, I'm not sure, sounded like a good idea awhile ago, but I don't think they've updated on their progress. - genieyclo
"In other words, the iPhone or iPod Touch, with a tiny 3.5 inch screen, has a vastly better browsing experience than any Netbook (it’s faster too)." - Mike Reynolds
Take the iPhone/touch OS, triple the size of the screen and you have an answer people will really be interested in. - Bob
I've been using a Dell mini 9 for a month now, and it has become my principle machine. My work site is a 45,000 sq ft healthcare facility, and I quickly got used to carrying 2 lbs vs. 6 lbs. - Dean Barnett
Obviously the caveat on the TC piece is YMMV and you should append a "for me" at the end of his title. I love netbooks, I have two and use both of them in different ways, where my MacBook Pro would not work. I'm also excited about what they will do with them. And the prices keep coming down, the one I bought for $600 in July now costs a little over $400. - Dave Winer
The best thing about it (I keep thinking of best things) is there's no one to tell me what software I can put on the computer. That's the one reason iPhone Just Isn't Good Enough. - Dave Winer
Netbooks will be good enough in tough economic times. And that will transform them into being good enough. - Cliff Gerrish
I just like the idea of 'TC Web Tablet' but I don't like the way it's promoted - by throwing BS to netbook concept, this is what Michael's doing - or seems like doing. Netbooks below 10" are not ergonomic and might be 'good for an hour'. But: Asus Eee PC 1000h or any similar netbook with 92% keyboard and 10 inch screen is just adequate for young people who need computing on the go. And what I believe: Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is the future of netbooks. - Burak Bayburtlu
1000h is the benchmark.12 inches is too much. - Dave Winer
Netbooks will advance cloud computing for many, force it mainstream, and then bigger and better machines will follow. A netbook will be my next computing purchase, I think. - Karoli
@Michael "And even the Atom 1.7 just doesn't work that well when you ask it to do anything hard." What apps are you trying to run? - Jeff P. Henderson
Netbooks are succeeding because it's a great combination of portability, battery life, and cost. It addresses the issues the UMPC's lacked: a keyboard and lower cost. It was also born from the introduction of the OLPC, which addressed its performance issues, the ability to run Windows, and retaining great battery life. For mobile warriors, such as students, this is fantastic and most people don't need a speedy processor to browse the web or use cloud based applications. - Rodfather
And I'm wondering what the 7" eee-skype will look like / do. - Alex von Halem
I’m a little sad that Palm’s timing with the Foleo last year was such that the tech press declared it DOA, and pretty disappointed they listened to the press rather than letting the market determine whether it was a worthwhile device. It would have been nice to see them in this segment, offering an alternative to the shrink-a-Dell Win XP solution.I wonder if we’ll look back at 2007 as the year Palm died, deciding to try to hold off iPhone, RIM, and Android rather than innovate and be the first to offer something in a new space (ala the Palm Pilot). - Ken Sheppardson
And I just ordered an Eee... There goes my buzz. - Bodil

Hmm, anyone tried out the "RedFly" Windows Mobile "extender"/secondary display thing from Celio? - Tyson Key
The thing that makes all of the small form factor devices, including Android and Symbian devices, inconvenient, is, in the end, battery life. It's not the OS at all. - Mr. Gunn
Reading this on eee 901, just worked on blog article, showed a vacation video to family. This is the only computer I carried with me on vacation. Summary, netbooks are perfectly functional...just depends on what you need/are trying to accomplish. Isn't that the case with all computers? - Sean Brady
There's a line somewhere. I don't expect BarackObama to follow what 139,059 users might say to him. Duh. IMHO, if you have more than 1000 followers and you're not Scoble, you're excused from auto-follow. - Ken Sheppardson
i'm with Sean, i use my eee 901 for about 3 month with a 3G connection everywhere i go. It's fast enough for skype, seesmic, youtube and multi browser sessions. No crashes at all. I love that little thing and the screen is much bigger than on my HTC mobile phone. - Mathias H.
I have an Aspire One and LOVE IT. It has started to take on more more of my work, almost to the point where it feels like I use my desktop PC just to sync my iPod. I agree with Mr. Winer - there needs to be a "for me" on the end of this post title. I love my netbook. - Shawn Farner

Lycos Europe Calling It QuitsWeb portal and hosting provider Lycos Europe is throwing in the towel. The company has announced its intent to shut down its portal, hosting, and shopping businesses and try to sell off its domain names. The move still has to be approved by shareholders at the upcoming December 12 meeting. If approved, Lycos Europe would distribute €50 million to shareholders — which would amount to €0.1605 per share. (Full explanation here, in PDF format.) Lycos Europe is separate from the American Lycos site, though both have largely fallen to the wayside in recent years. Last month, Lycos Europe revealed its...

Lycos Europe To Shut Down After Failing To Find BuyerIt's the end of the road. After putting itself on the auction block in April, Lycos Europe has finally conceded what had become increasingly clear - no-one wants to buy the ailing portal. So it confirmed Wednesday morning it will wind up its portal and its web hosting activities. It's now about asset stripping - the company said it still wants to sell its domain names, its Danish business and its shopping sites. As a result, Lycos Europe will give back €50 million to its shareholders. All subject to a December 12 shareholders meeting. As the Web 2.0 fraternity might...

Virtual Goods Site PlaySpan Raises $16.8 Million Series B The gray market for virtual goods has grown so large China has moved to tax the trade, but Valley-based startup Playspan wants to take it above ground. The company says it's raised $16.8 million dollars in a Series B round from investors including Easton Capital Group, Menlo Ventures, Novel TMT Ventures, and STIC to make it happen. Playspan's idea: Create a hub where online game players can buy virtual goods -- like a snazzy shirt for your game avatar, or a +6 two-handed sword of dragonslaying -- for real cash. The company already works with more than 50 titles,...

Who says raising money is hard these days? PlaySpan makes it look like child’s play. The startup, which was literally founded by a 5th grader, just raised $16.8 million in a series B round from existing investors Easton Capital Group, Menlo Ventures, Novel TMT Ventures, and STIC. PlaySpan was founded two years ago by Arjun Mehta, then in the 5th grade, and his father Karl Mehta, who is the CEO. It is a marketplace and micro-transaction payment system for virtual goods in more than 200 different video games. So far this year, more than $50 million worth of transactions...

Mini Friday, the mobile Habbo Hotel, nears 1M usersThe makers of Habbo Hotel, the wildly popular virtual world game aimed at teenagers, have quietly released a mobile version called Mini Friday that is seeing steady growth: It’s about to hit a million registered users. That’s a robust number, keeping in mind that the application requires downloading and registration, is restricted to users 18 or older, and runs only on select phones (Nokia S60 series). The company also hasn’t really talked about the product. Habbo Hotel’s co-founders Sampo Karjalainen and Aapo Kyrola revealed more about the overall company’s momentum yesterday, during the “Slush” event here in Helsinki on entrepreneurship,...

TV Startup Sezmi Closes on $30 Million Funding, Even As It Lays Off StaffSezmi, the ambitious TV startup founded by Phil Wiser, former CTO of Sony (NYSE: SNE) America, has raised about $28 million in new funding, and aiming to close this third round at $50 million. However, the hopes of raising more might have to be tempered for a while with the economic conditions, and in keeping with that new reality, last week the company cut about 20 employees off its staff of 100. Founded in 2007, Sezmi raised $17.5 million in its first round from Morganthaler Ventures, Omni Capital, and others, but no word on how much the second round was....

U.S. Army To Keep Bored Iraqi Occupation Troops Busy With Video GamesThe American military is getting new tools to help train its soldiers in the global fight against Osama Bin Laden: video games. Stars & Stripes is reporting that the Army is planning on investing $50 million over five years on a new game to help train its soldiers -- "Game After Ambush" -- with the first-person shooter game letting players do "most anything a soldier does." Unlike game-slash-PR tool "America's Army," a game the Army distributed at recruitment centers to convince teens it was cool to enlist, this one is designed for in-house use. Army to utilize $50M, next-gen FPS training system; 24-hour LAN parties imminent The Army has been using video games to train, and recruit, for years now but in true government fashion, the system is a tad outdated. The $50 million dollar upcoming shooter however, should feature all the goodies found in today’s latest games and more. The virtual worlds are going to be huge - like 100×100 kilometers - and will allow solders to drive vehicles, pilot UAVs, and do “most anything a soldier does.” The new system has a Internet-enabled multiplayer function and can train a platoon or even a single soldier. Plus, there is the video review mode, multi-terrain options, and all the...
