Reuters Bails On Second Life After Figuring Out It's Really Not That Interesting — One of the sillier attempts by businesses to look cool by setting up shop in Second Life was that of Reuters, which assigned a reporter to hang out in the virtual world full-time and report on it as if it were any other economy. While we noted at the time there might be some interesting stories in Second Life, that seemed to be taking a back seat to the publicity value of the stunt. It was surprising to learn that the Reuters reporter was still there until recently, when he finally gave up the beat, calling it "about as fun...

Gadget Lab Video: New MacBook, Canon Vixia HF10 — This week's Gadget Lab video podcast, episode #17, features hands-on reviews of two hot new products: Apple's new 13.3-inch MacBook, and Canon's high-definition, solid-state, tapeless camcorder, the Vixia HF10. The new aluminum MacBook is one hot notebook, featuring a case milled in part out of a solid block of aluminum (which somehow makes it especially green, according to Steve Jobs) and an extra-large multitouch-capable touchpad. It's also a screamer, boasting better performance than the old MacBook Pro. Danny Dumas and Bryan Gardiner give it a 9 out of 10. The Canon Vixia HF10 is a cutting-edge HD camcorder that...

Why venture capital won't save your job [Meltdowns]Those who fund young, growing companies love to tout their industry's role in job creation. Jobs — we could use some of those now, right? But with venture-capital firms like Sequoia Capital insisting on across-the-board layoffs, it's hard to buy that argument; jobs may be created at startups quickly, but they are just as rapidly destroyed. But startups aren't the only ones being pinched by venture capitalists — they're also taking their investors for a ride, according to an industry insider. That insider is Adeo Ressi, the lanky, geeky founder of TheFunded.com, a site which lets entrepreneurs rate venture capitalists...

The Journalists WithdrawAshley Gilbertson reports on the reporters:Iraq has all but disappeared from the front pages. A study conducted earlier this year by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that the war occupied just 3 percent of the mainstream media’s news hole. Compare that with 2003, when 9 out of 10 Americans said they were closely following the situation in Iraq—a higher percentage than were following any other topic—and there were, by some estimates, more than 1,000 Western reporters covering the conflict. There’s an ongoing chicken-and-egg debate about whether lack of interest has led to a decline...

Using MS Word 2007 for Fast and Easy Blogging (Windows)Once, a focus group was asked about the features they wanted to see in a Microsoft Office Suite. It was found that of all the features they asked for, 9 out of 10 already existed. Reading about it I also thought of a few features of my own.  As a freelance writer, I wanted a better set of tools for myself. Of course, I had Live Writer, Flock and Scribefire to dally in but we internet junkies always want options we can play around with. Then Microsoft Office 2007 rewarded most of us with a refurbished interface. I think everyone...

Robert S. McElvaine: McCain's Straight Walk Express "Just a closer walk with thee." It should be the theme song of the McCain campaign, and the "thee" is George W. Bush. John McCain has given up Straight Talk for a Straight Walk. He is walking in lockstep with the campaign's Invisible Man, George W. Bush, in a straight line in the same direction Bush has been taking the nation. The direction of that straight walk is over a cliff, and the American people know it. Walking straight ahead at a time when 9 out of 10 American believe the country is heading in the wrong direction is...

Machine turns Jolly Ranchers into cotton candy, Dentists winLeave it to the clever Japanese to invent a machine that turns Jolly Ranchers into cotton candy. It’s all sugar in the end and I can just hear the ca-ching of cash register bells going off in the heads of dentists everywhere. Extra cavities means an upgrade to their yacht or a new sports car, or a new coat for a trophy wife. This device certainly helps a dentist retire happily. It’s called the Ame de Wataame, and it comes direct from Japan. So it isn’t cheap. Importing it will cost $159 plus another $60 for shipping. But come on,...

What Does John McCain Need to Do Tonight?Yes, McCain needs a game-changer, but not the kind that we've been seeing out of a campaign that seems to have lost any sense of a strategy as it lurches toward the finish line, news cycle by news cycle. More and more national polls are giving Obama a lead that is outside the margin of error, and it is looking even worse in many of the battleground states. If those polls are right and the election were today, the result would be an electoral college blowout. More to the point: Take a look at that jaw-dropping Gallup poll that shows...

U.S. poll finds most people unaware of nanotechnology and synbioIn what's being heralded a "groundbreaking poll," statistics experts have put together a survey where the questions are about small things. #1 - Do you know about nanotechnology? #2 - Do you know about synbio? In response to #1 nearly half of the U.S. adults polled knew nothing about nanotechnology. And 9 out of 10 knew nothing about synbio. While both of these are major technology initiatives often published on web sites, newspapers and TV shows, it appears that general public awareness is still very low....

Review: Is Brando’s iPower Power Station a “Juice Pack” killer? When it comes to the external iPhone battery game, the current media darling is the Mophie Juice pack, and with good reason (we gave it a 9 out of 10 rating). However, Mophie’s $100 Juice Pack currently only fits 1st gen iPhones, and their delay in getting their 3G model to market has allowed [...]...

First of all, let me state some things clear right in the very beginning: I believe SixApart develops one of the best blogging platforms on Earth and I also think reviving Blogs.com as a blogs directory less than a month ago was not a bad idea - the site looks pretty good and I definitely see people spending some time to discover new blogs suggested by Blogs.com editors here. And now I will have to say that I object to the latest marketing technique SixApart uses to promote Blogs.com because it really looks like spamming the entire blogosphere - and...

How Do You Prop up (or Display) Your Mobile Devices? Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed I used to love plopping down into a bean bag chair. It was just kind of fun to throw yourself into one. I’m not only talking about bean bags to take a trip down memory lane. I happened to buy one the other day that is designed for mobile devices. I have this plastic holder for my iPhone, but it just sat there all stiff like. It wasn’t a very happy and comfortable device. Also, when it rings, it would vibrate in a most annoying...

Wall-E's World? 86% of Americans Could Be Fat by 2030 The blockbuster Disney movie, Wall-E, was criticized for its portrayal of a future in which not just some humans, but all of humanity, becomes obese, but a new study from Johns Hopkins finds that its depiction comes uncomfortably close to projections from public health researchers. As one of our commenters wrote, echoing other critics, "The future presented in the film was ridiculous and over-the-top in how unlikely it was, and portrayed humans as fat, disgusting, and stupid animals (which may be true of some people, but not of many)."  The new study, however, finds that if something doesn't change...

Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery - Puzzle time! The macosxhints Rating:[Score: 9 out of 10] Developer: Grubby Games / Product page Price: $19.95 [Demo available]A couple years back, I selected the original Professor Fizzwizzle as a Pick of the Week. In 2007, Grubby Games released Professor Fizzwizzle and the Molten Mystery (PFMM from here on), and it was just as addictive as the original. Given that I've been enjoying it for over a year now, I figure it's time to give it a Pick of the Week selection.Like the original, PFMM is all about puzzle solving, and moving the professor from point A to point B in the...

The NY Yankees banned sunblock at Yankee stadium "to prevent terrorism." On a blistering hot day. And sold high-markup, crappy sunblock inside the gates. You know, as soon as we said "There is no price too high to pay in the war on terror," we lost -- and every sleazy con-artist, profiteer, greedhead and crook won. Security guards collected garbage bags full of sunblock at the entrances to Yankee Stadium over the sweltering weekend, when temps hit 96 degrees and the UV index reached a skin-scorching 9 out of 10 - a move team officials said was to protect the...

Final Cut Express 4 - iMovie HD's heir apparentThe macosxhints Rating:[Score: 9 out of 10] Developer: Apple/ Product page Price: $199 ($99 upgrade from older versions)I just finished another video project for Macworld (an overview of Sun's VirtualBox virtualization app for Macs), and as I finished the project, I realized just how pleasant it is to work with Final Cut Express -- and that I'd never given it the Pick of the Week nod here on macosxhints.com. Yes, it's relatively expensive, but if you have more than a passing interest in video editing on the Mac, it's well worth the cost of admission.I'll be the first to admit...
