22 Ultra Inspiring Blogs About Creativity and Idea GenerationI’m keenly interested in this whole creativity, inspiration, and idea generation thing. I like the idea of turning my (and your) cognitive surplus into something good. You can probably tell this from my recent postings about Maslow’s hierarchy, including esteem and self-actualization, as well as Creative Infrastructure 2.0. I’ve been scouring the Web for resources to learn more about the creative process, so I figured I should share them with you. The main (and highly subjective) criteria that I used to evaluate these blogs are: They were obviously about creativity and idea development They’ve had new posts within the past...

Eco Arts: Artist brings back the lost city of Atlantis with used plastic bottles Eco Factor: A city designed with used plastic bottles. Plato in 360 BC described a city named Atlantis, whose beauty was beyond any comparison. Mythologized for its abundance of striking temples and stunning vegetation, the city was supposed to be buried under the sea following a catastrophic earthquake. An artist named Gayle Chong Kwan has now brought back the city in old plastic bottles. Gayle’s Atlantis is commissioned by Arts Co. and is on display in an exhibition that is currently being held in London. The city has been carved out of semi-opaque used plastic food packaging, collected from...

British downturn's generational divideTheir first economic slump is a shock for many young people. Their elders have seen worse. Recession can have its upside. Perhaps, says Merilyn Canet, it's a timely opportunity for people to rediscover the true value of things after years of abundance and heedless waste. "Real life isn't about just having everything when you want it," said Canet, 67, who grew up on a farm in south England and still grows her own fruits and vegetables. "It's sometimes about saving up and looking after things, and the joy of making pumpkin soup from your own pumpkins."...

Kay Goldstein: Thanksgiving, a Practice of Gratitude — "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more... it can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend." - Melody Beattie Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday, and not surprisingly so. From our beginnings as a nation, immigrants to our shores have had much to be grateful for- bountiful land and resources, immense beauty, diverse cultures that enrich our perspectives and understandings, the promise of freedom and opportunity for all members of our society. Even before our European forebears came to North America, Native Americans...

If you share something, is it useful and educational?Hmmm, juxtaposing these three posts is thought-provoking....what is education all about? Is the 'coolness' factor overpowering the 'usefulness' factor? Thoughts? Planning to Share versus Just Sharing: But inevitably, with a very few exceptions, these projects spend an enormous amount of time defining what is to be shared, figuring out how to share it, setting up the mechanisms to share it, and then...not really sharing much. Or sharing once but costing so much time, effort or money that they do not get sustained. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I don't feel like this phenomenon is isolated to me or...

Hoy Se Ensaya Hamlet New Yorkers have long had the summertime privilege of Shakespeare In the Park, but only recently have Madrileños caught on. Like NYC, the city of Madrid boasts an abundance of independent theater, a beautiful park and now, as of this autumn, the two cultural assets combined with Shakespeare performed in the Parque del Retiro. But Madrid's approach differs from the metropolis across the Atlantic in a few key ways. Manuel Angel Conejero, the world-renowned playwright and president of the Fundacion Shakespeare takes the production of Hamlet into his hands, casting 13 young actors of all different backgrounds (most notably,...

@ Silicon Valley Comes to Oxford: Strategies for survivalSilicon Valley has been 'Coming' to Oxford for eight years now. It's a simple premise and a relatively small crowd, but with a powerful combination of ambitious and talented MBAs and entrepreneurs and a slice of experienced, high-profile Silicon Valleyers.First topic on the agenda this year? The economic crisis.• How long will the economy stay tough for entrepreneurs? The panel between 18 months and ten years, but the consensus was 2 years. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone echoed that. He said the team had "sensed something looming" and managed to secure a large amount of funding just before the markets started...

Danny Hoch, Solo PerformerDanny Hoch is a street performer of the theater in the sense that he is one of the most prominent figures that brings the genuine voice of the streets onto the stage and exposes it to a wide range of audiences. While you might recognize him from his supporting role in last year’s We Own the Night or Whiteboyz, the 90s film he wrote and starred in, he is most known for his work on the stage. His latest show, Taking Over, is a return to his signature one-person shows where he takes on a wide spectrum of New Yorkers....

We’re Doomed …What an abundance of ugly statistics we’ve seen this past week. An increase in tech sector layoffs and people talking about them. A decrease in chip sales. A decrease in online spending. And now a decrease in corporate IT spending as well. Forty five percent of respondents to ChangeWave’s November survey of corporate IT spending expect their companies to spend less money or nothing at all on IT during the next 90 days. And given the tech sector’s continued desanguination, who can blame them? If your stock’s trading at a 12 or 13-year low, you’re probably not thinking a lot...

Seth Meyers Defends SNL Against Claims of HomoverloadSNL Head Writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers told the LGBT-related magazine The Advocate that he "stands behind everything that happened" on last Saturday's show that has many critics crying foul over its reliance of gay jokes in almost every sketch of the night. Meyers takes the "I have plenty of black friends" defense by pointing out that there are gay writers on the show and that SNL is "on the right side of the issue." He also compared the abundance of gay-related sketches to come out of a week involving a lot of Prop 8-related discussion to this...

Pipl Updates, Offers Better Organized Stalking [People Search]Previously mentioned people search engine Pipl has updated with a slightly tweaked look and better, more organized results. In a quick comparison between recently featured 123people and Pipl, the results at Pipl thoroughly outdid 123people on accuracy when I searched for myself, including much more accurate results for real email addresses belonging to me. Just enter anyone's name and the city where they live and let Pipl dig up their online profiles, email addresses, photos, and more. With the abundance of people search tools available on the internet, it's easier than ever to track down anyone online. If you've already...

Not Your Father's DepressionDrake Bennett:...a depression circa 2009 might be a less visible and more isolating experience. With the diminishing price of televisions and the proliferation of channels, it's getting easier and easier to kill time alone, and free time is one thing a 21st-century depression would create in abundance. Instead of dusty farm families, the icon of a modern-day depression might be something as subtle as the flickering glow of millions of televisions glimpsed through living room windows, as the nation's unemployed sit at home filling their days with the cheapest form of distraction available.Good for blogs, I guess. Jarvis On The Google EconomyIn his column in The Guardian, Jeff Jarvis has an interesting piece that takes Google as an example to show how a batch of new companies operate well, despite a declining economy. Here’s an extract: In Google’s economy, small is the new big. Of course, big is still big — Google itself is gargantuan. But it doesn’t grow by borrowing capital to buy companies (likely no one will for some time to come). Instead, Google created a network for an abundance of new advertisers and a platform for countless new businesses, all independent of Google. Indeed, Google does not want...

Guardian column: The Google economyMy Guardian column this week argues that we’re witnessing not just the collapse of the financial (and auto and newspaper…) industries but the birth of a new economy best seen through - you guessed it - the lens of Google: The financial crisis might be damaging countless companies around the world, but last month Google announced another quarter of growth, with profit up 26%. When it reported similar results two quarters before, The New York Times’ headline proclaimed, “Google defies economy.” It should have read, “Google defines economy.” In this crisis, we are witnessing more than the failure of mortgages,...

"Most people would assume that the digital commons is naturally abundant (even though it does take a physical infrastructure to maintain), but that natural and processed material goods are ‘naturally’ rival and scarce. We intuit and know that a market-based and for-profit based system is necessarily interested in maintaining scarcity, but it may not be as central to our awareness. So, the following essay by Robert Verzola is profoundly radical and perhaps counter-intuitive. It details, with several case studies, that the current system is actually based on a radical war against ‘natural abundance’, not just for information, but in agriculture as well." - ~C4Chaos

Alsatian Apple Tart - Feast Your EyesFiled under: Feast Your EyesWhen I have an abundance of apples, my first thought it to make applesauce or apple butter. If I'm craving something a little sweeter, I'll make a crisp (check out this episode of Slashfood in the Kitchen to see Scott and me make both applesauce and a crisp). However, I aspire to make a tart like this one someday, with a creamy, custard-y base and carefully placed apple slices. According to the baker/poster, this is a snap to make and you can get the recipe here. Thanks Proof is in the Pudding, for adding this one...
