Compared to the ZzzPhone—a modern marvel of engineering and/or MSPaint—the i6-Goal is sort of boring: it's got no QWERTY, 3G, two-week battery, male enhancement powers, etc. It does, however, appear to be real. Announced by TechFaith Wireless and QIGI, two Chinese companies that very much seem to exist, the i6-Goal is a reassuringly modest accomplishment. The touchscreen phone is a relatively normal quad-band GSM phone, featuring a 2MP camera, GPS and an SD slot. The hardware actually looks quite similar to that of the HTC Touch, which perhaps not coincidentally can hackishly run Android. Notably, the handset will be the...
Filed under: Celebrities, 30 Rock, Casting, Reality-FreeIn the latest of a long line of celebrities to appear on 30 Rock this season, you can add CNN host Larry King. He joins a parade of celebrities with the same accomplishment including Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Martin and some of the cast of Night Court.Granted, he's a celebrity that everyone has heard of, but isn't Larry King getting a little past his prime? It seems the the celebrity guest-stars are getting more obscure as the season progresses. By the end of the season, it'll be Kathy Griffin and the guy who...
Some experiments further the cause of science and expand our knowledge of the world. And some people do just because they can. “Because we can” experiments do sometimes lead to discoveries and the expansion of knowledge, but we’re not sure this is going to be one of them. Team Australia took a poor, innocent MSI Wind U100 and overclocked its 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU to 2.385GHz. This is pretty cool, I admit, but would be much cooler if it could be done without having the guts all over the place and the need for liquid nitrogen to keep the thing...
Electronic noses are nothing new, but it's always interesting when you throw space into the mix. NASA's most recent Endeavor mission has taken with it a third generation e-nose that's the size of a shoebox, where it will act as a detection and warning system for air contaminants. The ISS currently has no system and relies wholly on the astronauts' actual noses. Developed and built by AEMC, the new nose's dynamic range is from less than one part per million to about 10,000 parts per million -- much more sensitive that human honkers. The e-nose has 32 sensors made...
It is hard to believe that this is my 100th post! It seems like it was yesterday when I made my attempt to create a blog, learning how to navigate and set up all the components. I can’t even remember when or why the idea came to me to do this. But it did and I most grateful for it. Not only have I gotten back into cooking, but I have made lots of friends and am grateful for the encouragement by all to follow my dreams. I am still not totally clear as to my calling- but I do...
It’s true, Facebook makes it pretty easy to connect with friends online. But what happens after you’ve mutually agreed to be friends with someone? The Facebook news feed does a good amount to inform you as to what’s going on with those in your friends list. But beyond the Birthday reminders, there’s not a whole lot that Facebook does to help you manage your online relationships. If you feel like your friends are falling through the cracks and you just can’t keep up with all the things you need to do for relationship maintenance, Socialfly is here to help. A...
Pandora is expanding its offering with music forum sponsored by Energizer batteries. The new Energizer Forum offers a place for Pandora users to discuss all things music: songs, artists, playlists, gadgets and more. As with all things Pandora, the site is clean and simple. Videos will be added next month. The sponsorship with Energizer is part of Pandora's aggressive push to monetize their traffic ahead of large pending royalty increases. Major brands have already been drawn to the site both because of an impressive user base and a cutting edge yet safe image. (No small accomplishment in the overcrowded...
Only a few days before the largest BitTorrent tracker will celebrate its 5th anniversary, the Pirate Bay reached a new milestone. The site now tracks 25 million peers, which is more than the entire populations of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark combined. When The Pirate Bay was founded, November 2003, it was a site targeted at the Swedish population. This soon changed however, when the founders found out that most visitors came from outside Sweden, or even Scandinavia. In the years to come, The Pirate Bay established itself as the largest BitTorrent tracker on the Internet. Recently, the number...
Corey Arnold's world straddles two disparate, yet wonderfully integrated, pursuits—he works as both a professional photographer and an Alaskan crab fisherman. Now there's a story. We asked him how his inside perspective on human and animal relationships influences his photographs. When I was a kid, I used to stalk birds and other animals with my BB gun in the backyard. My hunter instinct was strong and I'd spend hours searching for victims. Then, after killing something, I was torn by my adrenaline-fueled sense of accomplishment and deep sadness for what I had done. The same applied to sport-fishing as a...
Google is tight-lipped about the Linux version of its Chrome browser, but the company's programmers have proved a bit more forthcoming with a brief announcement that they have a crude version of Chrome working on Linux. "Dude, Gmail works in the test shell on Linux!" said programmer Dan Kegel in a note to the Chromium developers mailing list on Tuesday. It's pretty crude, though: the "enter" key doesn't work, for example. Chromium is the name of the open-source project behind Chrome. But what's a "test shell"? Aaron Boodman, who works on Chrome and Gears and spotlighted the Linux accomplishment,...
