Acer's K10 pocket projector announced, projected for January Tiny projectors are pretty much a dime a dozen these days, so we'll be honest, the Acer K10 kind of looks like more of the same. Sure, it's small -- just 1.2 pounds -- but that's not nearly as small as some (and certainly not small enough to be impressive). It's an SVGA projector with an 800 x 600 resolution, and it's got an LED backlight with about 20,000 estimated life hours, delivering 100 ANSI lumens with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. The K10 also boasts both S-video and VGA connections. It's a little hard to say, but this...

Netbooks Dominate Amazon’s Cyber Monday SaleAnd you wonder why Intel’s VP of Sales and Marketing Stu Pann is poo-pooing Netbooks. PCWorld is reporting that Netbooks dominated Amazon.com’s Cyber Monday sales in computers. The Asus 900HA took the top slot followed by the Acer Aspire One and it looks like folks opted for the 6-cell battery option across the board. No real surprise there....

A new wind for MSI's netbooks: 2GB, WiFi-n, less power consumptionMSI is to offer new netbooks: the Wind U110, U115 and U120. The U120 is much the same as the original U100, but with 3G built-in. It's the other two that do clever things with the standard netbook loadout, though all remain stuck with a 600-line display. Here's a bullet list: • Options for 2GB of RAM. • The Z530, a more expensive version of Intel's Atom CPU, which uses 20% less power. • A new chipset that uses less power. • 6-cell battery as standard. • Hybrid flash/spinning storage, also said to use less power. The holy grail is...

Mini 9 now offered with HSDPA — in the U.S. — It's Dell with the first mass-market U.S. netbook you can just order with no-nonsense 3G internet. From Lilliputing: The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 has won the race to be the first netbook to include an optional wireless broadband modem and service plan in the United States. While Acer, Asus, Dell, and others have been working with wireless carriers in Europe and other countries for a few months, most netbooks sold in the US have just a WiFi module for wireless connectivity It's $60 a month, and the upgrade itself costs $125. In other words, you have to get a two-year...

Acer's 16-inch Aspire 6930 reviewed: right on the moneyIn the battle between new 16-inch multimedia notebooks, it's safe to say that Laptop Mag prefers Acer's rig over Samsung's R610. The Aspire 6930 (or 6930G-6723, if we're talking specifics), was said to have an eye-catching design, great Blu-ray playback and solid all-around performance suitable for a media-minded lappie. Not to mention the sub-$1,000 sticker -- that helped, too. In actuality, the only real knock was the fact that a 1080p display wasn't included at the $999 price point, but we all know that's just being greedy. These critics didn't hesitate to dish out a 4 out of 5 star...

Google Chrome OEM Strategy To Take On IEruphus13 writes "In an effort to take on IE and make strong headway in its share of the browser market, Google is taking a page out of Microsoft's playbook and working on deals with PC OEMs to include Chrome in their devices. From the article: '[Google] is likely to pursue deals with major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to put Chrome on their computers and devices. ... If Mozilla could get aggressive about this too, we could see Internet Explorer facing more serious competition than ever. ... Google, much more so than Mozilla, has enough global brand recognition, money, and savvy...

Rumor: Intel to Launch 65W Low-Power CPUs for All-in-One DesktopsWith all the attention netbooks and nettops have been getting lately, it would appear that small form factor (SFF) and all-in-one PCs are getting lost in the shuffle. That won't be the case for long, as according to DigiTimes' un-named sources at PC vendors, Intel is gearing up to launch three new 65W low-power quad-core CPUs specifically for these two market segments.Core 2 Quad Q8200s (2.33GHz, 4MB L2 cache) - $245Core 2 Quad Q9400s (2.66GHz, 6MB L2 cache) - $320Core 2 Quad Q9550s (2.83GHz, 12MB L2 cache)  - $369From a specification standpoint, the new chips will be identical to existing...

Runcore SSD offers low-cost speed for netbooks Hear that noise, traditional magnetic storage? It's the sound of Solid State Disk technology that's creeping up behind you. jkkmobile shares news and the above video on Runcore's new mini-PCIe SSD products, which are fast but won't totally break the bank. How fast? jkk ran speed-tests on the storage and thanks to the high-quality controller paired with the MLC flash memory, he saw reads top out over 70Mbps with writes at a very solid 50Mbps. To give you some perspective, the SSD storage in my Acer Aspire One weighed in at 37 MBps for reads and an anemic 3...

MSI has a nettop, too, and it’s called the Neton Behold, the MSI Wind Neton. It’s a nettop, a new category of computer that can best be described as an all-in-one desktop version of a netbook. Think mini iMac. This here Neton, which was just shown off in China, comes in three sizes: 22 inches, 18.5 inches and 15.6 inches. (Those are monitor sizes, obviously.) All three models, named the M22, M19 and M16, respectively, use the Intel Atom processor, just like every other netbook and nettop. MSI will release the M19 in January with prices starting at $500. The top-of-the-line M22 will see a March release for $800....

Which PC Maker Can Weather the Economic Collapse? [Survival]CNET has a story on the suitability of the major PC manufacturers' lines to survival in these tough economic times. There will be fewer people shopping for new PCs, and more notably, fewer businesses, and these manufacturers will have to make solid strategic moves to make it out (relatively) unscathed. So out of the top five PC makers, who's got what it takes? CNET decided that HP, the world's leading manufacturer, will best be able to survive. A full third of its revenue comes from software, services, and enterprise storage, which won't take as big of a hit as consumer...

HP Mini 1000 At Costco We are at Costco this morning on our weekly “checking account emptying” trip and I came across the new HP Mini 1000 Netbook for $499. They just got it in last night. The keyboard felt really good, and the webcam worked well with Movie Maker. The Acer Aspire One is right across from it for $349. The keyboard on the Acer felt very cramped. Acer was advertising the Aspire One as a Mobile Internet Device. That’s funny, I didn’t know Acer made MIDs….. The clerk said the Acer was selling like wildfire and expects the HP to do the...

Disabling Wi-Fi on a Laptop [Mossberg's Mailbox]There’s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help. Here are a few questions about computers I’ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability. I have a laptop that I use primarily to play music. Is there any way to disable its connection to a wireless network? Sure, but exactly how you do that depends on the laptop’s hardware and operating system. Some Windows laptops have...

Acer's Aspire One A110X "Black Edition" hits the streets of GermanyFiled under: Laptops The Aspire One is selling really well, in spite of the fact that it kind of gets lost in the overwhelming wilderness of more exciting (cooler, if you will) netbooks, so it's not necessarily surprising to see it appearing in new and zany colors... like black. Sure, it's exactly the same as every other Aspire One 110 we've ever seen, but this one is... all black. In fact, it's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black. The special "Black Edition" has touched down in Germany for €400 (or...

eWeek Newsbreak, Nov. 10, 2008The recent Web 2.0 summit was more like a boxing match, as CEO's and Presidents made jabs at their competition. Microsoft is planning a quiet patch Tuesday, only announcing 2 security bulletins. This month ties with January for the smallest Patch Tuesday release of 2008. However one of those bulletins is listed as critical. Ashley takes you through both. Advanced Micro Devices has a lot going on right now. Last week the chip maker announced that it will be cutting nearly 3% of its staff. However in the coming weeks, A.M.D. will release a new version of its Opteron server...

Intel's Atom Largely Responsible for Worldwide Processor Market GrowthNetbook manufacturers like Asus, MSI, Acer, and all the rest aren't the only ones benefiting from the recent craze in low power, ultraportable notebooks. Underneath the vast majority of netbooks and low-cost desktops sits an Intel Atom processor, demand for which has contributed to record growth in the processor market in Q3 2008.According to a new report by the IDC, overall CPU shipments for PCs and servers jumped nearly 16 percent in the third quarter compared to one year ago, just over half of which is directly attributable to Intel Atom processor shipments. Without the demand for Intel's Atom processor,...

Walt Mossberg takes on Netbooks in a review in the Wall Street Journal and essentially says what we’ve known all along. For some users (browsing, email, etc….) they work well and for power use look elsewhere. He takes a look at a decent cross section featuring four models: The Acer Aspire One, The Dell Mini 9, the Asus Eee PC 1000H, and the MSI Wind and sees pluses and minuses with each of them. (Keyboards, trackpads, and battery life are key elements for him.) It is a pretty thorough review of each of these Netbooks, and from what I’m seeing...
