This morning I spoke to a very nice reporter from a Brazilian magazine called Veja - which I am told is their equivalent to Time Magazine. The angle for her forthcoming article was that you can do trend spotting by reading blogs. I half agreed with her saying that. Scanning blogs can be a great start but there’s a lot more to trends analysis than that. For PSFK consultancy clients we mix secondary deep scanning (from an international team of scouts) with primary research on the street and with an extensive network of informed opinion makers who we have...
Burger King's new ad campaign is a series of commercials depicting a taste test between the Whopper and the Big Mac. The twist here is that the taste testers are blessed souls living in areas so remote that they've never even soiled their intestines with Burger King! Yes, such oases do exist—or rather they did, before ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky airlifted in the fast food, as the teaser trailers suggest. The campaign calls them "Whopper Virgins," and AdFreak detects a none-too-subtle whiff of colonialism wafting here. And Marilyn Borchardt of Food First tells the Daily News it's insensitive...
From A Hamburger Today Burger King's latest campaign, Whopper Virgins (by ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky) aims to determine the winner in the Whopper vs. Big Mac battle by taking both burgers to remote places around the world—such as areas in Thailand, Romania, and Greenland—and conducting tastes tests with people who don't "even have a word for burger." Backlash against the Whopper Virgins documentary is pervasive. In The Daily News, Marilyn Borchardt, development director for Food First, calls the campaign "insensitive" and points out, "The ad's not even acknowledging that there's even hunger in any of these places." Dunca...

It’s all about turkeys this time of year, blah blah blah. What about the hot dog? Slashfood found a great video about the effort it takes to design the Phillies’ air cannon that shoots hot dogs at games. This is scientific stuff - they go through small trial runs and even position people in an otherwise empty stadium to gauge how far they can launch and figure out the angles. But you can see that they have a lot of fun with it. Even better, Red Tettemer, the ad agency that created the video, has redesigned their home page to...
Link: http://gawker.com/5098697/the-infamou... Yesterday, the entire NYC advertising industry was in shock after a video surfaced of two staffers at a particular firm going at it during after hours. (Apparently, the guy in the video is one of the firm's bigwigs.) Yippee - the video's finally hit the internet. Please enjoy (and obviously, this is NSFW!). PS - Someone needs to teach Mr. Big here that humping like a dog won't get you all the way to the top. No, New York is not underwater (yet, anyhow) - that’s a clever ad for HSBC by Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai ad agency in India. The bank wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of global warming, so the clever ad guys glued an aerial photo of a city’s skyscrapers to the base of a swimming pool … the effect of a submerged cityscape is fantastic!...
Filed under: Food Oddities, New Products If you've been to a Phillies game at Citizens' Bank Park in recent years, you might have noticed something different about the launcher that the Phillie Phanatic uses. He's not launching tee-shirts out into the stand like they do at some ball parks. Nope, he's shooting hot dogs out into the bleachers. If you've ever wondered about the technology used to send those dogs (well wrapped in foil, with mustart and relish) out into the top seats, you're in for a treat. Philadelphia-base ad agency Red Tettemer (the same folks who brought us the...
Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Programming, Reality-FreeCan two cable shows about the advertising world co-exist? Of course they can. With 12 Law and Orders, 9 CSIs, and 57 reality shows where sexy people live in a house, I think we can have two shows about advertising.Trust Me is the new name of the TNT series Truth in Advertising. It stars Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) as Mason and Tom Cavanagh (Ed) as Connor, best friends who also run an ad agency. Unlike Mad Men, it's set in the present day. Also unlike Mad Men, it's set in Chicago. See? Two...
