On November 20th I setup an advertising campaign on Facebook for my startup, CloudContacts. The ad setup program crashed a few times but eventually I was able to get the ad running. I selected men and women from 25 to 53 with a college degree as my initial test audience. Facebook told me that there were somewhere about 33 million users for the demographics I selected. Clearly this 33 million number is just profiles they have, not actual activity. Here are the campaign results: 81k impressions (majority of them in the first 7 days, nearly none since) 6 clicks...
Burger King's new ad campaign is a series of commercials depicting a taste test between the Whopper and the Big Mac. The twist here is that the taste testers are blessed souls living in areas so remote that they've never even soiled their intestines with Burger King! Yes, such oases do exist—or rather they did, before ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky airlifted in the fast food, as the teaser trailers suggest. The campaign calls them "Whopper Virgins," and AdFreak detects a none-too-subtle whiff of colonialism wafting here. And Marilyn Borchardt of Food First tells the Daily News it's insensitive...

Johnson & Johnson thought it would be a no-brainer to post a short video as the leading edge of an ad campaign for Motrin that was aimed at young mothers. Instead, its online gambit drew a fast and furious backlash from its intended audience, and the company decided to kill the entire campaign in its infancy. It didn't have to be that way. The Motrin ad used an irreverent tone to identify with young moms and the back pain associated with lugging infants in baby carriers. But it struck the wrong cord with some and drew fire on Twitter...

Filed under: Frugal Food, Vodka, America, Comfort Food, SpiritsOver the past few years, as premium vodkas have come into vogue, I've heard more and more about the taste of vodka. Suddenly, reviews have been overflowing with comments like "a nice, caramel finish," "a buttery nose," and "an insouciant grin underlying pearly orange tones." Okay, I made the last one up, but am I the only one who sometimes wonders if professional liquor tasters have been dropping acid?At any rate, the irony of this is that the ideal vodka shouldn't have any flavor at all. In fact, I'd argue that the...

Here’s the thing. Television and I used to have a really good relationship. Then she got greedy and I felt like she just didn’t care anymore. It was quite a disappointing breakup. We did however share custody on a few programs such as Lost and The Office. I detailed several reasons for the break up over at the now defunct Tubenation, but I’m going to pick it up here as I’ve discovered a few more. Goddamn. For the past few weeks as the NASCAR Sprint Cup series was coming to a close for the 2008 season, I was rather annoyed...
Holly blogged last week about how Gwyneth Paltrow offended the animal kingdom’s High Priests at PETA — and then publicly apologized — for daring to model a stole made of fox fur in an ad campaign for the Italian luxury brand Tod’s. In her mea culpa, Paltrow claimed that a stylist plopped the garment on her in the middle of a busy photo shoot, and her only real sin was failing to ask whether it was “real” or fake”: “It was a daylong photo shoot on a boat near Capri, and there were all sorts of poses with all...
