Recent talks with a local shop have prompted one of my least favorite tasks… writing an artist’s statement. It is an incredibly difficult task to describe your own work without sounding arrogant or self-absorbed. Worse yet, if your images span a variety of subjects and styles (as mine often to), trying to sum up the collection in a paragraph or two may seem impossible.
Here are some tips I go by when writing an artist statement for a shop or gallery that will be displaying my work:
Jot down some basic information about the photos included in this collection. Are they color? Do they have a common theme? Were they all taken in a similar location? Having a short list of details will help later when you are trying to tie everything together.
Nobody reading the statement will care if you shot with a Canon 5D or if Photoshop is your post-processing software of choice. If there are some truly unique elements involved in the work (printed on a special material or you shot through a hand-crafted lens, for example), feel free to include that information. Otherwise, leave out the details about your gear.
This is possibly the best way to get to the heart of why you took these photos. If you would love for someone to say “these photos bring sunshine to my home”, then you already have a pretty good starting point for your statement. Lead off with something like “I have done my job as an artist if these photos bring happiness and warmth to your home”.
All too often, artist’s statements are all about the art and don’t go into any detail about the artist. How long have you been doing this kind of art? Why did you start? Why do you enjoy it?
It is fine to say you are proud of this body of work, but try not to go overboard with the self praise. I have seen statements that say things like “an expert of her craft, this photographer captures beauty in a way that nobody else has”. I understand the value of confidence and selling yourself, but these kinds of descriptions will be a turnoff to a lot of people.
A friend once suggested that I do a haiku for my statement, which I thought was a genius idea. Different venues will have their own requirements, but take the opportunity to do something out of the norm if you can.
And if you would like an example of an Artist’s Statement, this is the one I went with for that local shop:
If these photos have a mission, it is this: capture rarely viewed scenes and environments and present them in an interesting way.
It may be a lonesome tree on an isolated hill or the dark interior of an abandoned building. Whatever the locale, on the best of days these images will stir up unexpected feelings and thoughts in the viewer.

The floodgates are slowly opening up for the brand new Canon Digital Rebel T2i (550D, Kiss X4). I'm sure Canon hopes this will have a "7D-like" impact on the market, but as always, only time will tell.
The first review is hot off the e-presses at Camera Labs. Included are multiple ISO comparisons between it and the Nikon D90 (which by the way dropped to $760) - check the pink "Results" tab and its text-based sub-tabs. They have two sets each, JPEG ISO crops and RAW ISO crops. Conclusions and a comparison to a variety of DSLRs in the verdict page which as usual, we won't reveal here.
The second review comes from the Camera Mother Land, Japan, by DC Watch Impress, with a vast variety of downloadable full-size JPEG samples (page-down a few times to get to the samples).
Next up, a dessert for the pixel-peepers out there! Neutral Day has published a three-way EOS comparison between the new T2i, the previous model T1i (500D) and the "uncontested" 7D. The full-size samples are available for download for evaluation purposes through flickr.
For more T2i/550D action, be sure to check the round-up at Foto Actualidad.
In terms of availability, the camera is not easy to find in-stock at the major retailers as you can see at the T2i stock status page. Some of the estimates seem to indicate that new supplies will be available within a couple of weeks, but it's not written in stone.
The ball is rolling for the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM II lens - at least in Japan. DC Watch writes that the Japanese market will get this lens on March 19, which is 12 days from now. This includes a hood (food) and the LZ1326 case.
We do not know when this will come out in other markets, but it is EOS-encouraging that B&H Photo is accepting pre-orders for this lens - this is often a good sign in terms of availability since B&H does not take pre-orders initially.
Canon is launching a new round of instant rebates, going from March 7 to April 3, 2010. Instant rebates means you get the discount before you complete the purchase, so there is nothing to mail-in. This promotion gives you $X amount for select lenses+flashes, and it doubles the rebate amount if you buy the lens/flash _together_ with either one of the Canon 5D Mark II standard kits.

The Canon Digital Rebel T2i (550D, Kiss X4) are slow to come out, and as usual, the short reviews come out first, since they are easier to complete. And a new short review of the camera came out today at ephotozine which includes full-size color-charts and ISO comparison scenes.
The launch of the T2i has left EOSians w[o/a]ndering, will there be a 50D-replacement to sit between this and the hot 7D? And if yes, wouldn't Canon be out of their mind to announce a camera that would slow down the momentum of the 7D, since it is currently running "unopposed" from the other manufacturers?
Right now the T2i is hard to find in the US market as you can see at the stock status page, however, a couple of retailers have estimates of arrival by March 15. But the battery and battery-grip are in-stock :)

If you’re thinking of putting down some bread for a new Canon lens, be sure to avail yourself of the various rebates in effect. Not that you’ll save more than $50 on a purchase of like a grand, but hey, that’s a couple filters or a lens bag right there. That 85mm 1.2L II is calling out my name — too bad I’m shaking change out of my old pants for ramen money right now. I guess it’ll have to wait until my ship comes in, or until I can flip these 20 MacBooks I… bought at a discount over in Jersey. Yes.

These go into effect on Sunday. If you’re a Nikon guy, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered too.

This is a thermos designed to look like Canon's 70-200mm L-series zoom lens. I just bought 400 of them and am gonna sell them on eBay as the real thing. Because I'm a sheister. THE MOST HANDSOME ONE EVER. You hear that, Ponzi? FACE!

Tired of Canon vs Nikon wars? How about a medium format duel? LL-Cool-Landscapes regular contributor Mark Dubovoy has just published a Phase One P65+ vs Hasselblad H3D-50 multi-shot comparison at Luminous Landscape, starting with a funny yet practical disclaimer. Findings, observations and conclusions on the website, we won't spoil them here!
The Canon Digital Rebel T2i (550D, Kiss X4) may be currently sold out (see stock status page) but it has gotten in the hands of a number of early adopters - and some decided to share this with the rest of us. See some video unboxings of the camera by non-camera-reviewers on the YouTubes:
+ Francis Imp - first DSLR; with unboxing assistant
+ Soldier Knows Best unboxing
+ Sly Fox with big knife; video/audio is sped up (thus the Chipmunk effect)
+ and lots more
On the stills side of things, Photography Bay has an ISO comparison set, with RAW vs JPEG included in each ISO setting.
Forget brick walls, there is a new favorite subject in the dpreview forums, tomatoes ;-)
And now back to the movies, Cinema5D features a video preview of the camera by retailer Digital Rev. They take the camera to an animal-abuse facility (horse races).
Not shortly but in 10 years. And not entirely, but street newsagents and paper press will be almost gone at that time.
A prediction that I have shared with the daily french newspaper LaCroix who wrote a story about it that obviously creates some comments (french) that I always read with pleasure.
I just left some more details:
many photographers also said digital was too expensive and amateur and would never switch. My kids who are 9, 12 and 14 never saw a traditional camera, I should fix that I still have my old Canon EOS10 somewhere.
many liked the old records and the record shops, too. Tough to find, these days.
Paper press and newsagents will sadly see the same trajectory happen and I don’t think we will see many in the streets of Paris in 10 years. Enough time to make the digital readers technology a cheap commodity.
Time will tell if my prediction is right, we will see in 10 years. What do you think?

[Direct Link]Review Your possible reason for buying this camera may have changed fairly recently. The EOS 7D would have been the only way to get 'standard' and 'film' frame rates from a Canon DSLR product in HD, but no more. There is a new model which offers very much the same video functionality and output for a fraction of the cost, the Canon EOS 550D – more on this later.…
