Another victim of high rents and, oh yeah, the Internet: Streetlight Records' flagship store on 24th Street in Noe Valley is closing. The 32-year-old company will still keep its other SF outlet at Market and Castro. Besides the obvious toll downloads have taken on record sales, "Noe Valley has become particularly expensive and we can’t afford the rent," says the official Streetlight press release. But apparently the rents in the prime of the Castro are standing strong... So what would you like to see at this pricey chunk of 24th Street and Noe real estate? To the comments with complaints...
PriceSpotter is Curbed's asking price guessing game. We provide you with some details and pictures from an apartment listing, and you take a crack at the price in the comments. Wednesday reveal. And hey, cheaters never win, and winners never cheat! Click the image above to view the full photogallery. Way back on Monday, we introduced 2870 Washington St, aka this week's PriceSpotter. To refresh your memory, 2870 is a full-floor TIC in Pac Heights with three bedrooms and 2,482 sq ft of leg-stretching space. Despite the fact that everyone seems to disparage TICs these days, guesses were all over...
[photo courtesy flickr photog brainchildvn] Sure, we called it, but this was a pretty easy one: protests of Proposition 8 popped up all over the state this weekend. The march down Market Street from the Civic Center to the Castro and Dolores Park garnered a crowd of 1,000 or so, while 400 protesters outside Oakland's Mormon Temple forced a temporary closure of Highway 13. Elsewhere: about 2,500 gathered on the Capitol in Sacramento yesterday for a three-hour rally, and 10,000 protested in San Diego. It's not over, folks. · Same-sex marriage backers hit Capitol, churches [SF Gate]...
Rumor, rebunked! That old Ford dealership will, in fact, become a Whole Foods market and not a Trader Joe's. Just what you were hoping for: more Whole Foods square footage and upstairs condos coming to San Francisco! According to the developer in charge of the project, WF just signed the lease for 2001 Market Street at Dolores for this mixed-use project: nearly 30,000 square feet of grocery and 85 residential units above, all to be completed in mid-2011 (financing allowing, obvs). Got plans for Halloween? Some of the best parties have already happened, Flickr's photo streams tell me. This military pair had a gay old time in the Castro at Booty Call. Don't try heading to San Francisco's queerest part of town tonight, though; the City is still obstinately trying to ban Halloween from the neighborhood. Can you think of a better caption? Leave it in the comments. The best one will become the post's new headline. Yesterday's winner: WagCurious, for "Pirates of Silicon Valley." (Photo by Kevin Goebel)...

Fall Line Analytics brings us this adorable map that depicts in blocky cool tones just how liberal our lefty city is. (Love the purple for progressives!) The answer? Yeah, pretty liberal, but no real shockers on the geographic specifics here. Big winners on the left: the Mission, the Haight, Western Addition, Bernal and Castro, plus some outlying chunks of Bayview and Lakeshore. And with their heels dug deep on the right: the Marina, Pac Heights, the Sunset and West of Twin Peaks. · Off To The Races! [Sweet Melissa]...
Far from Vietnam is a movie from 1967 that's screened, watched, discussed, far less than you'd think it would be given that it's directed by Jean-Luc Godard (at the height of his formalist Marxist influence), the poetic documentarian Joris Ivens, the livejournalist of the French New Wave Agnes Varda, the American-in-Paris photographer William Klein, the modernist-chic time traveler Alain Resnais, the New Wave also-ran Claude Lelouch (there were always a bunch of second-tier directors attached to these kinds of projects), and the mercurial international man of semiotic mystery Chris Marker. This assemblage of the work of the various directors is...
Unlike today's other map unveiling, this one takes itself very seriously, punny name aside. 2itch maps the 24-hour everythings city-side. There are currently 109 laundromats, coffee shops, fast-food restos and various sundry other goods and services available around the clock within the city limits. Granted, that's less than a fifth of what LA, NYC and Chicago have, but hey -- we're beating Seattle! The most notable thing about the map is the sheer density of SF's 24-hour hot spots, with nary an outlier. 2itch proves it: if you're not in the Civic Center/'Loin, Van Ness Corridor, Castro or North...
