Philip N. Cohen: Family Diversity in the Later Stone AgeThe DNA revolution has extended proof of the "traditional" family back to about 4,600 years ago, hundreds of years before Abraham's non-traditional family. New research from a burial site in central Europe confirms that a man, woman, and two young children buried together were a nuclear family -- the boys were the sons of the adults. The nuclear family discovery is not surprising, since we already had good reason to believe that some people in the Later Stone Age lived in this arrangement. Still, the nuclear family angle drove news reports of the discovery to headline status. The lead researcher...

Yahoo OneSearch coming to T-Mobile phones? According to InfoWorld, Marco Boerries, executive vice president and head of Yahoo’s Connected Life Division, let it slip that T-Mobile and Yahoo will be announcing a partnership to put the Yahoo OneSearch button on T-Mobile phones. If this rumor pans out, this is good news for Yahoo whose financial struggles are, well, numerous. Yahoo OneSearch may be Yahoo’s ray of hope as OneSearch is doing rather well in the mobile search market. AT&T also inked a deal with Yahoo back in September to bring OneSearch to AT&T handsets. Yahoo has an exclusive deal with O2 in the UK and...

Extreme Weather Postpones Flowering Time Of PlantsExtreme weather events have a greater effect on flora than previously presumed. A one-month drought postpones the time of flowering of grassland and heathland plants in Central Europe by an average of 4 days. With this a so-called 100-year drought event equates to approximately a decade of global warming....

Coup in fantasy kingdom inside Czech RepublicFor a fictional place, the Kingdom of Wallachia has many of the trappings of a real-life realm – a flag, a currency, a university, a state limousine and a national passport. Now it can add a bitter power struggle to the list, for a very peculiar coup d'état has just shaken this quiet corner of central Europe where the line between fantasy and reality has become increasingly blurred....

Vodafone’s EMAPA region changed aboutThere must be a lot of fun at Vodafone’s Newbury headquarters with the phrase, ‘EMAPA’. We have a lot of Vodafone readers here so I thought it was right and proper that we addressed the news from Big Red this morning. There’s changes afoot. Big chaps are being moved about. Offices are set to be redecorated. However before we get into that, I have to make a comment about EMAPA. Whilst everyone else on the planet is organised into various regions that correspond with the rather cool sounding, ‘EMEA’ (Europe, Middle East and Africa’), Vodafone seems to use the ‘EMAPA’...

Cool Visualization Shows World's Spending On Electronics By Country (We Spend A Lot) [Fun With Data]Here we see ol' Mercator, if country sizes were drawn according to the amount of discretionary income spent on electronics by its citizens. As the world's largest economy, the US being the biggest blob here at $162 billion for 2007 is not that surprising. But what might be surprising is Japan, who spends more on recreation than clothing, household items and electronics combined—pretty interesting for such a style- and gadget-conscious nation. Also note central Europe's electronics spending, which is clearly becoming a force to be reckoned with if IFA in Berlin was any indication. Head over to the NYTimes for...

Time Warner's Shopping List: Scripps, Overseas DealsChatterers are still hoping that Time Warner (TWX) tries to make a run at NBC U later this fall, despite GE's constant insistence that it's not parting with Jeff Zucker and company., and Jeff Bewkes' insistence that's not a buyer. So what will Bewkes do with the $9 billion he's getting from the Time Warner Cable (TWC) spinoff? It's a relatively mundane plan, says BusinessWeek, which has gotten some guidance from Time Warner CFO John K. Martin: It's going to buy back some shares. It might buy Scripps, which has a bunch of valuable cable channels. TWX likes cable channels....

Ericsson Slides On Weak Reception To Q2 ResultsEricsson (ERIC) shares are down sharply in early trading after the company reported disappointing Q2 results. As Marketwatch notes, profits of 1.9 billion Swedish kronor came in below the Street consensus of 2.94 billion, while revenue of 48.5 billion kronor were about in line. The company provided a cautious outlook on the telecommunications equipment market. “With no major changes in the market environment, we still find it prudent to plan for a flattish mobile infrastructure market in 2008 and our focus on adjusting our cost base remains,” CEO Carl-Henric Svaberg said in a statement. Ericsson said that sales “have continued...
