Help save the ACCRC James Burgett of ACCRC's skull of junked electronics (photo via Dale Dougherty) The Alameda County Computer Resource Center could really use your help, as Dale writes on boingboing: ACCRC is in desperate straits. The Bay Area electronics recycler is going through tough times with an emergency re-org and a lack of funds to pay taxes and healthcare for its employees. Its own internal problems are compounded by a sudden drop in the price of scrap metal. ACCRC has been a friend to Make and Maker Faire, and generally anyone in the Bay Area who uses computers and electronics and...

McCain Featured In Iran-Contra Group's Newsletter — A newsletter from 1984 provides more embarrassing evidence of John McCain's relationship with the U.S. Council on World Freedom, a group that was involved in funding militant anti-communists and espoused some anti-Semitic views. McCain's face graces the front page of the group's "World Freedom Report," published on Dec. 15, 1984, a copy of which was obtained from the research library at the University of Kansas. The front page also features a reprint of an article McCain penned that same month for Reader's Digest. In the early 1980s, McCain served on the advisory board of the Council on World Freedom, which...

CollectiveX, a bootstrapped startup located in Maryland, will roll out version 2 of it’s year old social network collaboration platform today. We first wrote about CollectiveX, founded by serial entrepreneur Clarence Wooten, back in 2005 when it first went into private beta. In May 2006 the service launched, and a year ago (at TechCrunch40) they launched Groupsites, which, among other things, let users create separate profiles for personal and business interactions. In a nutshell, think of CollectiveX as a sort of LinkedIn-type professional social network, with collaboration tools for groups (companies, boards of directors, whatever). Calendaring, blogging, file sharing, photos,...

eBay Launches New Green MarketplaceShopping "green" is the latest big trend in retail, and online auction giant eBay didn't want to miss out on it. To attract the new breed of "green"shopper, eBay has just launched a brand-new marketplace called "World of Good." On this new site, shoppers will find environmentally friendly and fair trade goods as well as other products that will appeal to the socially conscious. The site, built in partnership with fair-trade company World of Good, appeals to those looking for more environmentally friendly fare, like toxin-free, chemical-free products, for example. It also appeals to the socially conscious shopper who doesn't...

Blog Action Day [Blogging]Blog Action Day 2008 Poverty from Blog Action Day on Vimeo. Blog Action Day is a yearly blogging event that seeks to raise awareness about a topic by focusing a days worth of blogging effort on it. Last year, they tackled the environment and this year they have poverty in their sights. Blog Action Poverty is a big issue, far bigger than any single day of blogging but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot you can do to help out. One concrete way to help is by participating in the fundraising drive. Participating content producers are asked to donate...

Shared by sarahintampa I'm so getting this Rumors have been propagating through several popular Mac blogs that Apple will be releasing a red iPhone 3G model for the holiday season. The release will be well-timed, considering the initial iPhone hype will start to slow, and people will be opening up their wallets more for the holiday season. (Photo via MacBlogz) The red iPhone will presumably be sold as part of the (PRODUCT) RED campaign, a charitable organization that donates money to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Apple has released several products for this campaign previously, including (PRODUCT)...

Google’s Knol: The Monetizable Wikipedia Today Google has launched Knol, its Wikipedia alternative that holds authors accountable for the articles they write. Each article is created by a team of authors, who receive attribution, and are allowed to take part in a rev-share for AdSense ads on their page. Other users can submit changes, but they have to be approved by the article’s original authors before they go live on the site (it’s basically a moderated Wikipedia). Google says that it will allow multiple people to create Knols on the same subject. Knol allows users to rate and review Knols, and will likely include...
