How to Set up an iPad is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
I received my iPad 3G the other day, and decided to set it all up on my live stream. I had a USB cable plugged in to my MacBook Pro, and then took the other end and connected it to the new iPad. That really was all I had to do. The device booted up and connected me to iTunes. It asked me to set it up as a new iPad. I had to give it a name first… and asked the chat room for ideas. I’m liking the name Pythagoras. In theory, it’s an excellent choice.
After I had stepped through that section, I was ready to rock and roll. I chose to not sync anything automatically. I have my iPhone set up on the same computer, and I want to manage it separately from the iPad. Of course, I had to wait for activation, which takes a bit of time.
While I waited for the iPad 3G to start working, I went through the list to toggle certain features that I need. I encrypted the iPad, and converted my music to a lower bitrate to save space. I didn’t sync all of my apps, because there are many on my iPhone that I won’t want on the iPad. I’ll have to do those manually.
Even though I had to wait for activation to finish, I could still use the iPad. I couldn’t connect through AT&Ts 3G network, but I was able to do pretty much everything else. Stay tuned for another video, where I will be activating the 3G network and zooming along the information highway.

Ustream Viewer Beta for Android is a post from Chris Pirillo
Not long ago, we announced the iPad app for our live stream. Steve (Granit in our chat room) developed this app that will allow you to see the video AND the chat room right on your iPad screen – without having to click between them. You’ll be able to private message other users if you choose, and have moderation options available if you’re a channel operator. Additionally, if you click on a link within the IRC channel, it will open a browser window right inside of the app.
AndroidAdvocate is apparently disappointed to see there is not yet an alternative for those of you who are rocking with Android on your cell phone. His solution is to use the Ustream Viewer Beta, which is found on the Marketplace.
According to the Ustream blog, this is their second application for this platform. Their Broadcaster app was released last year. It enables users to stream live from their phones on 3G or Wi-Fi. The Android Viewer provides chat functionality, and when combined with the Broadcaster application… “it allows the first mobile-to-mobile functionality available on the Market.”
When the Viewer was released in November, it was done so in conjunction with a live KISS concert that was aired over Ustream. Viewer may only allow you to watch live video feeds, but it does so flawlessly. Use it to watch anyone’s live feed – from red carpet productions to puppies to my humble little show – while you’re on the go.
Ustream launched the iPhone version of the viewing app last January, when it was downloaded a whopping 113,000 times in 24 hours. It’s worth pointing out that the iPhone doesn’t have a Broadcaster app, because Apple won’t approve them. Could this give Android a small – yet important – leg up over the iPhone os?
MacBook Pro Unboxing is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
What’s so exciting about watching somebody unbox a new product? I’m not quite sure, but I’ll do it in front of a live virtual audience any day. Over 1,300 of you tuned in for that particular broadcast! If you think this is boring, you’re probably correct. There’s honestly not much to it, folks.
I was able to get a brand-new MacBook Pro courtesy of our friends at PC Pitstop. Upon opening the machine for the first time, I have to echo what one person said in our chat room… this thing is “Geekalicious!!”
I’m heading off to Washington DC for a few days, and then to Hawaii next week to speak at a conference. The new MacBook is going to get a workout, so I’ll let you know how well it works when I return!
Which Camera is Better? is a post from Chris Pirillo
Over on Geeks, someone was wondering which camera is the best. The first thought that came to my mind was what the bot in our chat room will tell you if you ask “what is better.”
“Chris recommends you use what you want to use, download what you want to download, try what you want to try, buy what you want to buy. These choices are all personal in nature, so it’s always difficult to answer the question of “which is better” (so don’t be surprised if Chris doesn’t answer your impossible question).”
No one can answer this question for you. It’s one thing to ask which cameras (or whatever it is you’re looking for) someone uses, why they prefer it, and whether they’ve had any issues with it. That is called information gathering, and is an important part of the research you should be doing before buying anything new. Always ask questions of others. Find out what their experiences have been with their devices. Read reviews online. Ask for recommendations.
Don’t ask ME what the best is, or you’ll likely get a reply much like the one above from the Pixie bot. What’s best for me may not be what works the best for you.
I DO know that what’s best for your computer is to keep it updated with the latest and greatest software we can find!
Ramen Noodles for Bachelors is a post from Chris Pirillo
Being a single guy living alone, I’m able to eat anything I want for dinner. I admit to eating some strange things now and then, but this stuff takes the cake.
Someone suggested I try Ramen Noodles. Okay, fine! I headed to the store and found out that you can buy like a case of these little packets of food stuffs for around a dollar. I only bought one, though, to see if I would even like it.
After opening the package and taking a bite, I couldn’t figure out why they tasted so plain. It says “Chicken Flavor” right on the front! Thank goodness the chat room pointed the way to the little packet of flavoring still inside the original package.
Dumping half of that in my mouth didn’t really make it taste like chicken, though. It just tasted like I licked a big block of salt. What’s up with that?
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here, but I don’t think I’ll be crunching on these again any time soon.

- Josh HaleyWill Google Fiber be Good for Your Broadband Diet? is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
The other night, I decided it would be fun to take live questions from the chat room and email. One of the questions was sent in by Eddie, who happens to be a co-developer of the WicketPixie WordPress theme. He wondered whether Google Fiber will whip the cable companies into shape… or if said companies are too stubborn to fall into line.
If I were a part of competing companies, I would definitely be worried right about now. I would most certainly be using Google Fiber here in my house if I had the opportunity. I like Google. I may not like everything they do. I think they need to hire a designer, for instance.
As far as Google Fiber is concerned, I think phone companies have more to worry about than what cable companies do. Google is a name that people trust. People feel that they already are using their other services so why not switch to their broadband?
I do believe that this will drive down prices from competitors such as Comcast. I’ve been very happy with my Comcast connection for the most part. I had big issues when upgrading my business class line. I received a bad Netgear router which turned out to be from an entire bad line. Once we got past those hiccups, things were smooth sailing with Comcast. However, I do pay a lot of money for the connection. I’m online 24/7, and I need my connection to work.
If I had a fiber connection, I would switch the live video feed from DSL to that. I can only push so much down that DSL pipe before it bursts!
Any competition is good. But I would be concerned – and making changes – if I was in the industry where Google is dipping their proverbial toes into the mix.
Google Fiber – information at the speed of light. Would YOU use Google Fiber if it was available in your area?

[Direct Link]Our Network is Alive http://bit.ly/bCZa3F
The British novelist Ian McEwan said, "The naming of what is there is what is important." But there is a thing, or an idea, a system or network, that we live with every day, that we live in, that we, in point of fact, are, which has no name.
When apprehending and recognizing something new, we humans name it. Some say we name things in order to control them and there might be some truth to that. But who would not elect to control an earthquake than be controlled by one?
Our information gathering network has changed out of recognition, but its taxonomy has lagged behind. We need to name this new network, and we would like the readership of ReadWriteWeb to help us.
In the Big Room, our editorial chat room, we were speaking about the earthquake that struck Baja this afternoon.
Before the media, even the new media, got it, we had read it on Twitter. ReadWriteWeb has written before on the ability of this new tool, and others like it, to gather and disseminate information.
In the course of this discussion, we came to a surprising realization. Twitter was no more the issue than the so-called mainstream media was. We were beyond all of that now. Our network was not restricted to three news channels, or the cable news networks, or a handful of social media websites or thousands of Facebook accounts, or even all of those things taken as a whole. Our access to information, our ability to exchange it, was no longer bound by anything at all, with the possible exception of time. The reason for this sea-change is that we ourselves have in part become the system formerly we only used. We have become the fulcrum of our own network. Prometheus is well and truly unbound.
This network, the one that connects us to virtually every part of the world, to every person on the globe, branches like a Mandelbrot set. It consists of computing devices from desktop computers to laptops to tablets to phones; it consists of every program written to run those devices, every website and service that helps us to process and move the truths we witness or create; it consists of cell towers and server farms; it consists of social media tools and word processing programs; but above all it consists of, it is powered by, human beings, both singularly and in aggregate, minds and mind.
Our network is alive.
But it needs a name, and we jdon't have one. Jokingly, one of us called it The Culture. It isn't. It isn't even a culture. Just a network. But a vast one, a possibly game-changing one and, above all, a nameless one, one which we should control rather than allow to control us.
Help us assert control over an exciting, but daunting reality. What should this global network, this lace of machine and human, location, data and feeling, thought and thing, observer and observed, speaker and listener, be called?
DiscussThe Chris Pirillo Live iPad App is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
If you’re a fan of my live stream who also happens to be getting an iPad, you’re going to want this app. Steve (Granit in our chat room) has come up with an app that will allow you to see the video AND the chat room right on your iPad screen – without having to click between them. You’ll be able to private message other users if you choose, and have moderation options available if you’re a channel operator. Additionally, if you click on a link within the IRC channel, it will open a browser window right inside of the app.
The app gives you the capability of viewing the live stream in the h.264 format. If I’m doing something particularly fun or interesting, you can easily switch to full-screen mode, and see me larger than life!
The IRC portion of the app is something we are very proud of. You’ll find that the options and commands have been simplified a bit, so that people who aren’t yet very comfortable with chatting on IRC will be able to find their way around quickly. There are also several optimization options, such as allowing you to change the font size and background color, showing user modes, a simplified “whisper” theme, and the ability to turn off (or on) specific channel notices and changes (such as user joins and parts).
When someone private messages you for the first time, an alert will pop up. It will ask you whether you want to accept or deny the message – and even lets you block further messages from them if you choose. When you accept a pm, a new private room is automatically created for you to talk in – away from the main one.
Last – but certainly not least – you can choose to use this app in portrait or landscape mode. In portrait mode, the chat room will appear underneath the video. When you turn your iPad the other direction, the chat and stream will appear side-by-side.
Steve did a fantastic job. The app won’t be ready for release just yet, but he’s working hard on it and adding new features. The only problem is… what should we name it?
Embed My Live Stream and Chat on Your Windows Desktop is a post from Chris Pirillo
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
If you’ve ever wanted to embed my live stream and/or chat room on your Windows desktop, it can be confusing as to how to go about it. I know that many of you have asked for tips, so I was happy to see this video done by the GTAXLLive channel.
Open up any web browser, and head to Amnesty Hypercube for Windows. Download and install the widget. Once installed, you need to right-click your desktop prior to opening it. Click “View” and make sure “Show Desktop Icons” is NOT checked.
Open up Amnesty Hypercube. At the top of your screen, you’ll see a little icon that you can click on. Choose “Create Widget from Code” from the drop-down menu. Now, point your browser towards my live stream. Once the stream loads, you’ll see a “Menu” button at the bottom of the stream. Click that, and choose “Embed”. Select and copy everything in the line that says “Live Show”.
Back in Amnesty Hypercube, click “Create Widget” from within the “Create widget from code” menu. Voila! You have my live stream on your desktop. You can move it anywhere you would like. Repeat the process to embed the chat room, only this time from the live stream, copy the embed code where it says “Chat Room”. Note that you can also embed this directly from the GeekShed network itself, as well.
That’s all there is to it! Thanks so much for making this much easier for everyone out there.
My audio thoughts on the chat room problem http://bit.ly/a30iPI Thanks @akiva for a great post. Hope the Google Buzz team listens. #Cinch
