The New York Times reports that Penny Pritzker is a leading candidate for Commerce Secretary: Two other leading contenders for cabinet positions emerged late Wednesday, Democrats with knowledge of the process said. Meet The Man Who Delivered North Carolina For Obama — At an election night boiler room at Cary's upscale Umstead Hotel, dozens of operatives of Barack Obama's presidential campaign watched as North Carolina went blue for the first time in nearly a third of a century. Watching with special satisfaction was Marc Farinella, 50, who cut his teeth on Chicago politics. Farinella was the chief architect of Obama's victory in the state....

Cheers and Jeers: MondayFrom the GREAT STATE OF MAINE... Happy Birthday, Howard. Last week Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sent out an mail: Our friends at the Democratic National Committee laid it all on the line to bring change this year. The DNC's 50-state field strategy was crucial to our campaign's success, as well as victories for Democrats up and down the ballot. Their organizing infrastructure allowed us to compete---and win---in states that seemed insurmountable just four years ago. They took out substantial loans to make it happen. The DNC didn't hold back, and now, neither can we. You were there for this...

Cheney And Biden To Meet Privately At VP Residence — WASHINGTON — Vice President Dick Cheney, getting ready to hand off the job as the nation's second-in-command, will sit down with Vice President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday at the Naval Observatory. Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell said Cheney and his wife, Lynne, have invited Biden and his wife, Jill, to their home at the observatory, the vice presidential residence. Is the BBC doing enough with its outbound links? The BBC's Internet Blog has tackled the ripples of criticism surrounding the BBC's external links policy in a post today. Initially, the problem was that the BBC just wasn't linking out enough which, in its position as the biggest UK website and as a publicly funded entity, means it has an obligation to the the nation's greatest purveyor of links.Blogstorm started this on Saturday, saying that in an act of "selfishness and greed" the BBC has replaced direct, more search engine-friendly outbound links with redirect links."Links from the BBC have, historically, been some of the most important links that a...

BBC and Google juice: the BBC respondsDemonstrating once again why journalists should not only blog but monitor incoming links, the BBC’s response to the recent story about ‘holding back Google juice’ in its linking came to my attention as I was scanning the incoming links to this blog. John O’Donovan, Chief Architect, BBC FM&T Journalism, says “nothing sinister”, and: “We are rolling out improvements to the way this works, as already used on some other parts of the website. Essentially we use JavaScript to retain SEO (”Search Engine Optimisation“) and Google juice for external sites, while we will still be able to track external links. Search...

Babelgum COO Quits In Latest High-Level ShakeupBabelgum's chief operating officer Michael O'Callaghan is leaving the P2P online video platform, we have learned and confirmed with the company - just the latest senior-level switch this year. O'Callaghan is based in Dublin in his native Ireland, where the company is headquartered for tax reasons. The company will now have changed its CEO, CTO and COO all in the last 13 months. The decision to swap original CEO Erik Lumer was for Valerio Zingarelli last year has proved unpopular with some inside the company, with original CTO Mallku Caballero and his chief architect Gianni Scenini leaving earlier this year...

At the Professional Developer Conference being held today in Los Angeles, Microsoft Chief Architect Ray Ozzie announced the company’s cloud computing platform, Windows Azure, which is a response to Amazon’s Web Services stack and Google’s App Engine. Azure is a cloud computing platform that allows developers to create web applications using existing Microsoft development tools and deploy them across Microsoft’s data centers via a pay-as-you-go service (pricing has not been announced). The following is Microsoft’s bullet point pitch for Azure: Add Web service capabilities to existing packaged applications. Build, modify, and distribute applications to the Web with minimal on-premises resources....

Sun co-founder departs to challenge CiscoPounded by the stock markets after a poor showing in its recent earnings report, Sun Microsystems now has another thing to worry about: Co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, who most recently served as chief architect for its systems group, is leaving to help run a startup called Arista that will reportedly make networking equipment for a growing industry segment. Aside from helping to found Sun in 1982 with Scott McNealy, Vinod Khosla and Bill Joy (the latter two are now venture capitalists), Bechtolsheim is famous for being one of the very first investors in Google, and also co-founded a company called Granite...

Ex-Cisco SVP to Lead Andy Bechtolsheim’s Latest Switch StartupAndy Bechtolsheim may be well known for co-founding Sun Microsystems, but the reality is that his list of accomplishments is much longer. Whenever there is a major infrastructure technology shift, you can bet that 53-year-old Bechtolsheim is starting a company — like Granite Systems and Kealia, for example. Neither one of them ever became a household name, but both were scooped up for millions of dollars, by Cisco Systems and Sun, respectively. Granite Systems went onto become the underpinning of Cisco’s Gigabit Ethernet switching business. For a fan of classic rock, Bechtolsheim is tech-world’s equivalent of Eric Clapton.   In 2004, along...

@ Mipcom: Turbulent Babelgum Finds New CTO; Player Upgrade And New Management Coming SoonUnder-the-spotlight Babelgum has quietly promoted its chief technical architect Egidio Corsini to be its new chief technology officer (CTO), hoping to bury a year of animosity between its tech team and its new leadership. The heavily-funded outfit is also hiring general managers for each of its five key content areas. Original CTO Mallku Caballero and his own architect Gianni Scenini left earlier this year in opposition to Valerio Zingarelli, who ousted Erik Lumer as CEO. In the wake of the tech shake-up, we've been hearing tales that all is still not well, with continued resentment toward Zingarelli from some quarters....
