Puppy's Picks - 11/25/08by Jennifer Laycock I scan hundreds of feeds and read dozens of articles each day so you don't have to. From the new "Twitter-bite" to small businesses turning to the web for cheap marketing, find out which articles I dubbed as must-read for the small business crowd today. I remember talking to my friend Matt Bailey earlier this year after a conference and hearing him talk about how he seems our industry shifting from the "sound bite" to the "Twitter bite." His point was that people would soon begin making their points in 140 characters or less, so they could...

SMX London - Empowering Search Marketers - Cool tools from MicrosoftThe first London SMX in 2007 was a great conference– so the 2008 event held in the New Connaught rooms in Russell Square had a fair bit to live up to. However in spite of a recession there was a good crowd in attendance and the conference attracted many attendees people from all over Europe. To kick off the event Chris Sherman reminded us that we there were a lot of positive changes happening in the current search space. Search engines themselves were finally opening up – particularly so MSN & Yahoo. So Chris suggested we were now witnessing an...

Lessons learned from Google's Lively experiment Not all Google endeavors turn into gold. Case in point: Lively, a virtual world launched less than five months ago, albeit in "beta." Google announced on its blog late Wednesday that it would shutter the product at the end of the year to focus on its bread-and-butter search business. Here's an excerpt from the post: Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it's the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people's lives. But we've also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet...

Virtual Worlds Expo organizer explains name change An organizer of the event formerly known as the Virtual Worlds Expo has explained the recent name change to Engage! Expo. The name change was announced yesterday in an email to recipients of the Virtual Worlds News newsletter. Virtual Worlds News Publisher Christopher Sherman, who is also the executive director of event organizer Show Initiative, told the Industry Standard that an evolving marketplace and fluid definition of the term "virtual world" prompted the change. "We feel that actually the story is changing, or rather, expanding," Sherman wrote in an email. "The market has expanded considerably since we first held...

SMX China 2008 - Report From NanjingPosted by gillianLast week, as the US financial powerhouses began to pay the price for their lack of fiscal responsibility, I was on the road in Seoul, Nanjing (for SMX China 2008), and Tokyo. I had a great time! I haven’t felt such excitement, vigor, and potential in a long time. SEOmoz sponsored the water bottles. Chris Sherman took a shot of me showing it off before the keynote speech. I was going to post a standard review of the conference with stats, etc. but Shor wrote an admirably thorough review of the state of search in China and Chris...

SearchCap: The Day In Search, September 29, 2008Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the web. From Search Engine Land: Why Position Bidding Wastes Money It's remarkable that in 2008 there are still many bidding systems in use by SEMs and in-house PPC managers dedicated to "finding the right position" for each keyword. These position crawling systems guarantee inefficiency and lost opportunity; to put it concisely: they're playing the wrong game. Here's why:... Link Building BasicsKevin Ryan Mike Grehan is taking over for Kevin and moderating a list of troublemakers that includes Michael Gray (Atlas Web Service), Jeff Quipp (Search Engine People), PJ Fusco (Netconcepts) and Jody Farmer (CreditCards.com). Mike says he's fascinated with the application of network theory. He's going to talk about history. Oh noes. He says that back in the day he used to spam the heck out of AltaVista. He used to do a lot of keyword stuffing, but then the search engines realized what was going on. Keywords don't always equate to authority on a subject. A college student can...
