Radio review by Elisabeth MahoneyOn the Woman's Hour (Radio 4) message board yesterday, a listener suggested that, following a prickly interview with Tilda Swinton, Jane Garvey should be renamed GI Jane. It was a tremendous clash of tones and demeanours, as Garvey's bluff no-nonsense manner collided with Swinton's indulgently arty and grand take on everything. Things didn't begin well. Swinton described her character in her new film, Julia, as having "gone to seed". "Now hang on," Garvey cried, "it's kind of Hollywood-gone-to-seed." The short skirmish that followed was the verbal equivalent of well-matched opponents locked in an arm wrestle. "You thought she looked great?"...

Google Layoffs May Affect 30k Workers. Sort of…Google Layoffs - 10,000 Workers Affected reports WebGuild with a bombastic title.  I can beat that: all Google workers will be affected, at least emotionally.  As to what the real numbers are, several sources point out that while employee headcount is around 20K, Google has about 10K temporary workers, so whichever way you count, laying off 10K workers would equate to: eliminating all the temp positions letting go 30% of the (extended) workforce, which seems to be the Silicon Valley rule cutting the employee headcount to half (if we ignore temps) Either way it sounds way too dramatic, a step...

Earlier this week I was reading my brother's blog and he listed his top 10 Clash songs on it. I thought, "gee it would be nice to have them as a playlist." So just for kicks I went to MySpace Music and made the playlist and put it on my MySpace profile page. I'd embed the playlist here but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do that. Anyway, when you listen to Jackson's top 10 Clash songs on MySpace (and you should absolutely do that!), you will notice that the stream stops every four songs...
ABC.com's Full Episode Player has hard interruptions, too. Very annoying. All the other networks and Hulu use soft interruptions. I wonder what ABC.com thinks they're gaining with the hard interruptions? - Andrew Meyer

Growing Jewelry Growing Jewelry is a redefinition of modern values. It is a clash of jewelry an gardening; couture and organism. The collection of this hand jewelry is designed for people in metropolitan cities and is an experiment in drawing nature toward man, as nature being the presupposition of life. A Clash of Idealists and “Realists” Becomes ApparentThere’s been something bubbling in D.C. for the past year or two and more recently, it’s become boiling hot: the convergence of the technology crowds from around the area. It’s something that I’ve been pushing for at least two years and a number of other people have been supporting as well. Something that has increasingly become apparent is that there are simply people that get it and those that don’t. In one panel I was sitting in on earlier this week, a group of individuals were fairly critical of the government’s ability to become less bureaucratic and more quick to...

Pushing Daisies With Paul F. TompkinsI happened to flip by the highly enjoyable ABC show Pushing Daisies last night, and as I was pausing for a second to grab a Wednesday Night Pointlessbeer from the fridge, I heard my roommate randomly exclaim, "Hey it's the dude from your thing!" Indeed, there was the dude Paul F. Tompkins playing "The Geek," a novelty magician who turns to murder when his mentor abandons him. As happy as I always am to see PFT appearing in stuff outside of BWE, it was still an unexpected clash of my professional and personal lives, like that time I came home...

Paint the White House Black Lyrics, George Clinton, Baby!!!I've been on the interwebs long enough to find everything I've ever wanted to find, needed to find, hoped to come across, and a lot of stuff I wish I'd never seen. One thing I haven't been able to find since I started looking when our new King, Barack Obama, began his run for office, are the lyrics to the funkolicious "Paint the White House Black," by one of our elder kings, George Clinton. I have the CD Smell My Finger, and in 1993 I danced like a proper funkateer to PTWHB. But I never could find the lyrics online.SO,...

FDIC, Treasury Clash On Anti-Foreclosure Plan — A top U.S. banking regulator unveiled a plan on Friday to prevent about 1.5 million foreclosures, breaking ranks with the Bush administration by demanding bailout funds be diverted from banks to consumers. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said the plan would modify millions of delinquent mortgages and the government would reward participating lenders by sharing the cost of defaults on restructured loans....

Is This a Sign of an Ego Clash Among Tech BloggersDavid Sifry, the famous founder of Technorati Blog search tool, yesterday launched the first public version of his new venture – OffBeat Guides. These are personalized travel guides (in PDF) about places that are in your travel itinerary. So if your planning a trip to New York, simply enter the city name, the hotel you are planning to stay and what you get is a ready-to-print PDF booklet with lot of useful information about that place plus notes written by professional travel writers. See example. Now unlike most other product launches where PR agents send all the pre-launch information to...
Is This a Sign of an Ego Clash Among Tech Bloggers? - Louis Gray
No, it's a sign that some people don't care to be part of the echo chamber AND sites don't necessarily make the best PR move by giving TechCrunch the exclusive. You can have TechCrunch's views or a more distributed audience... make the choice. No one wants to report old news. I'm more than happy to work around things... for example, TIS syndicates VB. I don't want to double-cover, so if I know it's a launch, I'll ask if they are covering, and if so, try to find a different angle to the story. A good PR rep is happy to work with that. - Cyndy

iTunes Store Debuts Discount Movies and Albums [Saving Money] The iTunes Store is now offering a weekly selection of albums and movies for download at $4.99 each. On the music side, pick up classics like the Clash's "Combat Rock" and Miles Davis's "Birth of Cool." On the movie side, it seems to be a tribute to California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, with classic Saturday afternoon popcorn fare like Terminator 2, Total Recall, and Red Heat (there's absolutely nothing classic about The Last Action Hero). Yes, they come laced with DRM, you'll have to burn them to your own CDs or DVDs for archiving, and you have to sign up...

Giants Head Into The Eagles' NestThe Giants face a familiar and dangerous foe Sunday night as they head down to Philly for a clash with the 5-3 Eagles. The key to beating Philadelphia is controlling Brian Westbrook. Westbrook, one of the most dangerous players in the league, is as big a threat receiving as he is running with the ball. Expect the Giants to key on him all day in an effort to keep him under wraps. On defense, Philadelphia has one of the best units in the league and they are good at getting to the quarterback, recording 27 sacks so far this season....
