Mozilla today announced that it has served its 1 billionth addon download since they started keeping track of these downloads in 2005. Currently, Mozilla's users are downloading close to 1.5 million addons every day. Mozilla has cultivated one of the most active and interesting developer communities around its products and seeing numbers like these will surely give a lot of other developers an incentive to try their hands at developing new plugins for Firefox as well. Sponsor Mozila also just released a new interface to showcase some of the top Firefox addons, which will surely bring a lot of new...
While consumer companies were inflicting bad packaging upon us, a new category of tools developed to get the darn things open. These will probably remain on store shelves until the new wave of packaging emerges. Let's have a look at what's out there: The Ultimate Package Opener has a short 2mm blade that extends and cuts into packaging when the button is pressed. Zibra's Open It is the Swiss Army Knife of package opening, with shear-like clipper jaws, a boxcutter extension and even a screwdriver to open battery covers. The KwikCut works something like an old-school can opener: you puncture...
Click the image above to view the full photogallery. As it currently stands, 469 Clipper St. is probably the house that all the neighbors hate. Every SF neighborhood has one -- the run-down eyesore that's bound to attract all sorts of unacceptable hooliganism and pick-pocketry to an otherwise picturesque block. So why not help 'em out and buy the extreme fixer-upper before it collapses. Your $979,000 investment even gets you preliminary plans for a new home, designed by ZAK Architecture. Actually, if the 3,500 sq ft renovation is built as designed, the neighbors will probably start fuming about the "ugly...
Jeff Staple posted photos of his co-worker's simple but effective iPhone stand -- a binder clipper. Crafty iPhone Stand...
I used to keep odd notes in Outlook as it meant they were available on both my PC and my BlackBerry. However, using Outlook meant they were only available on one PC and one mobile device; not on my Nokia E51 or my other PCs. A few months ago I started using Evernote as the main repository for my notes. Evernote is browser based so can be accessed from any PC or mobile phone that has a browser. As well as the browser version there are local clients for Windows, Mac, Windows Mobile and iPhone. The browser version works...
(Click photos to enlarge) When we moved into our house four or five years ago, I tasted one of the persimmons growing on the tree in our yard. It was a nice orange color, so I assumed it was ripe and ready to eat. I peeled off the skin and took a bite. It was awful, like sticking a spoonful of alum in my mouth. I threw the accursed fruit in the trash. The next year I read that persimmons tasted better if you soaked them in brine first. I tried it. It was like eating a salty styptic...
This weekend I was meeting a friend on Treasure Island and while waiting a great photo opportunity presented itself. The largest privately owned sailboat the Maltese Falcon, owned by venture capitalist Tom Perkins, sailed past with the San Francisco skyline as a backdrop. Now while I focus on landscape and nature subjects I won’t hesitate to photograph an interesting event or news worthy subject. With that in mind if you plan to “go with the flow” in regard to photo opportunities its critical to always have your camera gear on hand. Back to the Maltese Falcon… I’m not a mega-yacht...
Jim Wild wrote in with his review of the iPhone App - Evernote. - - - - - As someone who’s mind tends to constantly overflow with questions, ideas and useless facts of information, I’m often trying to find creative new ways of leaving myself notes. Odd text messages, cryptic emails and post-it notes stuck to my screen are a way of life. More often than not though, these snippets get lost in my daily barrage of communication. With no real system for cataloging my thoughts its any wonder I get anything done. Until now that is, enter Evernote. The...
The Remington Shortcut is a clipper designed for self-administered haircuts. A curved clipper head makes it almost impossible to over-cut small or large regions, and the clipper's unconventional hairbrush-like shape makes it easy to reach the most awkward spots on your head. Before getting the Shortcut, I'd tried cutting my own hair several times and always had disasters. On my first attempt with the Shortcut, I got about the same results I'm used to from a pro, which rather astounded me. It seems almost impossible to mess up. Using the Shortcut takes me five to ten minutes, which I...
I’ve been blogging here about Web apps and ideas for work for a while now so I thought I’d revisit some of the apps I’ve posted about in the past months. Where are they now? What are some of their latest developments? Ever Improving Evernote I blogged about Evernote back in April while they were still in private beta. Mike Gunderloy has also covered them several times. Judi Sohn has also mentioned them a few times including recently. The latest from Evernote seems to be some tweaking to add more finesse to the application’s versions on the Web, via Mobile...
"World's Biggest Wind Farm" It seems like "the world's biggest wind farm" gets announced every other month these days. The one on everyone's radar is T. Boone Picken's 4 gigawatt Texas monster, scheduled to be completed in 2014. Now the new contender for the title is a joint venture in South-Dakota between BP Alternative Energy and Clipper. Over Two Thousand Wind Turbines 2,020 Clipper Liberty wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.5 megawatt, will add up to a total of more than 5 gigawatt of clean energy production capacity. Too ba......
Want your friends and family to know about stuff they should get you on your next birthday? Just create a wish list at Amazon, add those products to the wish list and send everyone a link. Simple. Now there’s a new feature that lets you include products from non-Amazon sites to your Wish List as well through this bookmarklet. The process is almost as simple as saving a web page on delicious but here you don’t add tags but instead indicate the price of that item that gets displayed in your wish-list. Once you save the product, it appears in...
Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Free, cross-platform note-taking application Evernote offers a handful of tools for clipping content into your Evernote account, including the newly released Web Clipper Firefox extension. Aside from a Clip to Evernote entry in the right-click menu and a new toolbar button, the extension works just like the Clip to Evernote bookmarklet (perfect in its own right if you don't want to install another extension). The inline dialog autocompletes tags and adds the item to your Evernote account without interrupting anything you're doing. A Web Clipper keyboard shortcut would be nice, too, but the extension or bookmarklet are...
