These days, anyone could use a few good laughs. Guess that means the timing of Comedy Central's latest launch is well-timed. The Viacom-owned cable network has taken Jokes.com, a property that it acquired in 2002, and relaunched it Wednesday as a hub for its stand-up comedy archives. Sort ......
Sling Media, the company behind the popular Slingbox TV-streaming hardware devices, has opened the gates to its video portal Sling.com. The site pits Sling directly against Joost and Hulu (though Hulu is a Sling partner), allowing users to stream a variety of television shows and movies for free through an intuitive Flash player. Sling’s selection of media is pretty comprehensive, offering content from most of the major networks and studios including Warner, Sony, and MGM (Sling is licensing some of its content from Hulu). The site also offers movies from a number of smaller sources, like College Humor’s shorts....

The site pits Sling directly against competitors Hulu and Joost, allowing users to stream a variety of television shows and movies for free through an intuitive Flash player. Sling’s selection of media is pretty comprehensive, offering content from most of the major networks and studios including Warner, Sony, and MGM (oddly enough, Sling is licensing some of its content from Hulu). The site also offers movies from a number of smaller sources, like College Humor’s shorts. But there are...

Nothing like a touchscreen computer from HP, and the TouchSmart TX2 is one of the coolest I have seen for a while. The touchscreen can be used by two fingers, and the user can apply iPhone gestures like pinch, rotate, arc, flick, press and drag, and single and double tap. The TouchSmart TX2 is unique as it has a specially-designed hinge so a user can convert it into three modes: PC, display, and tablet. It even has a rechargeable digital ink pen that allows the user to draw on the screen. If you want to use the pen to write,...

When RedLasso took down its TV clipping service earlier this year amidst legal action by the TV networks, bloggers who used the service to embed clips of breaking news stories, memorable quotes and gaffes were left without a replacement. Many former users, including Perez Hilton, Jossip, Hot Air and the Huffington Post, have felt the service’s absence in their daily gossip and politics coverage, and at times resorted to ripping and posting TV clips themselves. Now a new service called 1Cast, which we had the scoop on a few months ago, is giving the space an authorized try. RedLasso not...
HP's Touchsmart TX2 is awesome because its the first consumer-oriented convertible notebook to feature a multitouch technology built into the display. The 12.1-inch screen uses a capacitive touchpanel that can track two points simultaneously, operate with fingers or a stylus, and comes with the Mediasmart 2.0 interface customized for the notebook. While Dell's oft-mentioned Latitude XT came out last year with the multitouch power to simultaneously track all five fingers, the feature was kept dormant until the middle of 2008 and lacks any realy mainstream software to take advantage of the tech. The Mediasmart 2.0 software lets you watch movies,...
Web video has transformed the way the Internet is used, but finding the exact clip you want can be incredibly hard. And it’s no wonder, considering that sites like YouTube conduct their hunts by looking at a clip’s “contextual metadata” — tags, video title and description — and thus can often be misled by false information. For example, a homemade video about cooking might be inaccurately tagged with a popular search word like “Obama” so as to get more traction. This week I tested VideoSurf.com, a site that claims to be the first to search videos by “seeing” images...
Boxee, maker of a social media center software platform for HDTVs and laptops, has secured $4 million in first round funding from Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures. The two firms each accounted for exactly 50% of the investment. Bijan Sabet from Spark and Fred Wilson from Union Square (also see Fred’s blog post on the investment where he calls boxee the ‘Firefox of media center software’) will join the boxee board. Boxee is bringing us a step closer to a true open, social TV experience. The app gives your computer (Mac OSX or Linux, and soon also Windows) or...
