Yahoo to make BrowserPlus open-source It was probably inevitable given what Google did with Gears, but Yahoo said Tuesday it's releasing BrowserPlus software as open-source software. BrowserPlus and Gears are aimed at improving browsers' native abilities so Web applications can better match those running natively on a computer's operating system, and Gears already is open-source software. Yahoo announced its intent to make BrowserPlus open-source software on its Yahoo Developers Blog on Tuesday. "Openness is a key initiative and a major theme for Yahoo this year and beyond, and open-sourcing BrowserPlus is part of that commitment," said team member Lloyd Hilaiel. "This will allow developers...

Software Add-ons Make Drobo the Firefox of StorageEarlier this year the makers of Drobo, the very slick, easy-to-use “data storage robot,” announced an SDK that would allow developers to create additional software for the Drobo. And now the early fruits of those labors are available through the new DroboApps download center. The initial crop of Drobo software add-ons features some pretty cool stuff, like the Firefly iTunes media server, support for rsync, Perl, Bash and other utilities. There’s also a version of the Drobo dashboard for Linux. Sadly there’s still no version of one of our favorites — the SlimServer media server — for the Drobo, but...

If you’re not familiar with Songbird then here’s an article by Mark from a few months back in case you missed it. I vaguely remember trying Songbird years ago and soon gave up due to it being hopelessly slow and buggy, but considering it’s still only in alpha (0.6.2) I can understand. After reading Mark’s article I was motivated to try it out again. I discovered huge improvements and while there are still performance issues, its acceptable and usable and has a great default theme. Music libraries of 10,000 songs are now comfortably supported and development moves every bit closer...
Songbird was great, problem I had was not with the program itself, it was with other programs, I tend to set my status to my currently playing song, and none of the scripts out there supported songbird. Great program but needs more 3rd party support - BCK
Thanks! Mind if I reshare? - l0ckergn0me
songbird is cool, but i'll admit i haven't used it as much as i thought i would - Sarah Perez
No problem Chris. @Sarah I haven't used it at all. Last.fm is my only music destination and sometimes imeem. - Corvida
