The G1 Phone App That Warns of the Flu in Your VicinityNow this is an interesting use of a mobile phone. The T-Mobile G1 phone now has an app made by Matriix (the a maker of Zicam over the counter remedies) called the Zicam Cold and Flu Companion will tell you approximately how many folks in your area are suffering from respiratory illnesses, along with what symptoms are being exhibited. Users can also check in with other zip codes ahead of traveling as Matriix pulls the info from Surveillance Data Inc which polls health care providers and pharmacies. Supposedly this app will be available for the iPhone in mid-December. It is...

Retro-tech deskfan I love this retro/deco/steampunk-looking desk fan designer/artist Clive Batkin made from a redundant computer cooling and some copper, brass, and wood. He was inspired by the look of the heat sink fins and the overall design of the original fan. He's got some other really nice pieces on his site, including The Optimus desk lamp this fan was designed to accompany. Intel: netbooks are OK for an hour or so, that's all Netbooks have caught the computing industry with their pants down.  What was originally envisioned as a cheap laptop for kids and those not wanting to do very much has in fact evolved into companion notebooks that owners are using for all sorts of computing tasks.  This has the companies behind the technology worried no doubt as they see the sub-$400 notebooks beginning to eat directly into their bottom lines. One company who has embraced the netbook is Intel, no doubt because their Atom processor has become the de facto standard engine powering virtually all netbooks.  Intel even jumped onto...

Download of the Day: TuneLyricsIt's pretty embarrassing to find out you've been singing the wrong lyrics to a song (marmoset instead of 'mama says', for example), but the download TuneLyrics can save you. As a companion to iTunes, TuneLyrics populates the words to each song you listen to as the songs change in a separate window. If it happens to not know the lyrics to a particular track, it lets you know and suggests a Google Search, with a button just for that presented to you. Rad, right? To learn how to post your favorite downloads to the Download of the Day group, read...

An infinite collection of Macquariums A few months back, when I inherited an old Indigo iMac G3, I asked you guys for ideas what to do with it... and have still yet to follow through on any of them. One thing I was resistant to the idea of doing was the timeless Macquarium mod: I suspected it would actually be a lot harder to accomplish than merely filling the thing full of water, as well as being prone to catastrophic failure and a bit cliched to boot. Still, if you're interested in turning practically any old Mac into a goldfish bowl, this instruction gallery...

PlayStation Visa: This Is Living With Debt (and a $250 PS3) [Credit Cards]We'd probably opt for a generic blue or silver credit card and rack up the sky miles or cash back rewards. But in case you wanted to show your PlayStation allegiance to every waitress, store clerk, and webcam companion that you secretly suspect to prefer Microsoft or Nintendo brands, this PlayStation Visa is ready to foot the bill while tallying up Sony rewards points in the process. Seriously though, signing up for the card will save you $150 off a PS3 from now until December 31st. So that's at least a little enticing. [PlayStation Blog via Kotaku]...

India: All expenses paid medical tourismLots of talk, not much action—until now. In January, Serigraph Inc., a West Bend, Wis., manufacturer, will become the first U.S. company of any size to embrace medical travel or medical tourism, offering employees the option of having certain nonemergency operations, such as joint replacement, in India. The company will pay all expenses, including travel and lodging for a companion. The incentive for employees is that they don't have to pay a deductible—typically $1,000 to $5,000—or the hospital copay, which would be 10 percent to 20 percent of the charges......

MIT’s Huggable robotic teddy bearThe kind of robotic teddy bear or soft toy seems to be the recent trend that the researchers are eagerly making. The reason is simply because, the cities are filled with more lonely and old folks who need these robotic beers to be a great companion. It’s designed to be much more than a fun interactive robotic companion for the lonely geeks. It’s able to be involved as a team member, to participate in a social network to interact...

Ask PPC Hero! PPC Geo Targeting Best PracticesLast week, we received a question (well, a series of questions!) from a faithful reader regarding PPC geo targeting. Her questions were based off a post that I wrote last year, and were really focused on strategy. In lieu of responding only to her, I felt this would be a good excuse to recap some of the PPC geo targeting best practices! I set up a campaign, using different Ad Groups to target different locations; including location in keywords: [party hire yorkshire] exact matches. Had planned to target whole of UK. But would like to try Location Targeting different areas...

Apple Starts Taking Orders for LED Cinema Display Apple on Tuesday began taking orders for its new $900, 24-inch LED cinema display, which will begin shipping later this month. Marketed as a companion for your Mac notebook, the display includes a universal MagSafe power adapter for the MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. The screen connects to the notebooks through a Mini Display Port. When Apple announced the LED cinema display in October, Steve Jobs stressed the "green" aspect of the product. He said Apple greatly reduced the use of polyvinyl chloride -- a chemical that produces dioxin, a dangerous carcinogen, during manufacturing -- in the display....

HP rumored to be concocting digiframe / slate PC hybrid deviceFiled under: Displays, Handhelds We've heard some rumors that were pretty far out in left field, but this one is far out. In fact, the only reason we're giving it even an ounce of credence is that it's a perfect market opportunity -- we mean, who isn't dreadfully sick of the plain jane digital photo frames that are impossible to distinguish from one another? At any rate, whispers have it that HP is working up a frame that will double as a slate PC of sorts, giving users a full blown web browser, e-mail client, RSS reader and access to...

laejoh writes "Monty Python's 'Dead Parrot sketch' — which featured John Cleese — is some 1,600 years old. A classic scholar has proved the point, by unearthing a Greek version of the world-famous piece. A comedy duo called Hierocles and Philagrius told the original version, only rather than a parrot they used a slave. It concerns a man who complains to his friend that he was sold a slave who dies in his service. His companion replies: 'When he was with me, he never did any such thing!' The joke was discovered in a collection of 265 jokes called Philogelos:...

Twilight's online marketing driving digital sales Unless you have a tween girl, odds are you have haven't heard of author Stephenie Meyer or her immensely popular Twilight series. Scores of tweens and teens, as well as many of their parents, however, are eagerly anticipating the movie version of the first book in the series, which opens next Friday, November 21. The online marketing for the film has been astounding. It's a complex, multifaceted outreach effort to fans and new customers, comparable with what the Obama campaign did online before the election. The online campaign has generated a huge amount of buzz for the movie, and...
