Lips patch brings microphone compatibility to Rock Band Our super sophisticated estimation process has it that a whole 2.89 of ya even care that Microsoft's Lips microphone won't work with Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but we're about to make just south of three Earthlings a lot happier. Harmonix and MTV Games have been working with Microsoft to provide compatibility (via a patch) with Rock Band 2, though there's no definite date to latch on to. Alright Activision, the bar has been set -- you up to the challenge?[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]Filed under: Gaming, PeripheralsLips patch brings microphone compatibility to Rock Band originally appeared on Engadget on...

Finally, A Google Earth Browser Plugin For Mac OS XThe long-anticipated release of the Google Earth browser plugin for Mac OS X (Intel and PowerPC) has arrived, about half a year after the plugin for Windows was announced and about 5 weeks after the introduction of the GE iPhone application. Linux users will still have to wait a bit for a compatible version. You can download by visiting any Google Earth Plugin app or visiting the GE API web site. Attention: the file is 47MB in size, because of the combined Intel and PowerPC compatibility. Go to EarthSwoop or 360Cities to see it in action. It will be interesting...

PostRank Google Reader Extension and Read It Later compatibilityWe noticed recently that when folks (including ourselves) had both our PostRank Google Reader Extension and Read It Later installed (and we totally recommend both), they didn’t play well together in Google Reader. (Thanks to the other people who alerted us to this as well!) Basically, the Read It Later checkmark sat on the PostRank score’s head and shoved the PostRank score down and they were just like squabbling siblings. So we said Enough! and sent them to their rooms. And now the issue has been fixed, so we welcome you to download and enjoy both. (If you had a...

MySpace, Flock and Vidoop release OpenID for Flock pluginFiled under: Web services, Open Source, Social Software, BrowsersOpenID is a really great concept. The ability to use a single digital identity across the web and avoid having to sign up for yet another user account is a real productivity boon. More and more high profile sites and services are adopting OpenID, but the project still hasn't gained the traction that many of us think it deserves. This is partially because it still isn't easy to use OpenID -- or even find out if a site supports OpenID -- on all services. MySpace, Flock and Vidoop think they've come across...

Pioneer shows off 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray Disc, affirms compatibility with current players When Pioneer first introduced its unicorn-like 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray Disc, we weren't sure if the thing would make it beyond the drawing board, let alone be compatible with existing BD decks. Over at the IT Month Fair in Taipei, Pioneer showed up to showcase the capacious disc, and better still, a DigiTimes report asserts that these are indeed compatible with Blu-ray readers already on the market. Currently, the 400GB disc is slated to hit mass production sometime between now and 2010, while rewritable versions won't hit until 2010 to 2012. Not like it really matters though -- a 1TB...

Esther J. Cepeda: Saving Yourself for Marriage: A Quaint New Custom for the Next Generation — Back in 1996, when Melody LaLuz turned 16, she'd already seen it all: friends gettin' busy, gettin' sick and gettin' pregnant, and she wasn't having any of it. When she learned that 2,000 teenage girls get pregnant everyday and 52,000 cases of sexually transmitted diseases are diagnosed daily (10,000 in teenagers) at a True Love Waits assembly at Lane Technical High School, she vowed to stay a virgin until she got married. What Melody didn't expect was that no one, not even her family, would think this was a good idea. "I went home and I said, 'Mami -- I'm...

The Myth of Upgrade Inevitability Is DeadSeveral readers pointed out a ComputerWorld UK blog piece on the expanding ripples of the Vista fiasco. Glyn Moody quotes an earlier Inquirer piece about Vista, which he notes "has been memorably described as DRM masquerading as an operating system": "Studies carried out by both Gartner and IDC have found that because older software is often incompatible with Vista, many consumers are opting for used computers with XP installed as a default, rather than buying an expensive new PC with Vista and downgrading. Big business, which typically thinks nothing about splashing out for newer, more up-to-date PCs, is also having...

Sooloos intros $7,900 Ensemble music management systemFiled under: Media streamers, Other hardware Not much has changed about the 17-inch Sooloos Control:One touchpanel you see above, but what is different about the newly announced Ensemble System is the lowered barrier to entry. In other words, this neat little package includes everything you need to digitize your CD collection and integrate it into your current home entertainment setup. The server itself includes an optical drive and USB port for importing tunes, 1TB of storage space...

Lunascape.tv - A Triple-Engine Web BrowserWhat it doesSelf-touted as “the first hybrid browser” in the world, Lunascape is a triple-engine web browser that attempts to bring the functionalities of Trident, Gecko and Webkit in the same product. The team behind this innovation makes the following reasoning: you might come across a web browser that is fast, but in order to have a better set off functions it is necessary to install add-ons that ineluctably slow down proceedings. What’s more, there is always the issue of add-on compatibility to bear in mind. That is why they decided to create a hybrid browser that not only makes...

Mozilla Releases New Firefox 3.1 Update, Prepares for Third BetaMozilla has released what appears to be a complete or near-complete version of Firefox 3.1 beta 2, just one day after officially deciding to insert a third beta in the browser’s development plan. The build, branded as Firefox 3.1 beta 2 rather than as Mozilla Minefield, appeared in Mozilla’s nightly builds directory early Wednesday morning, as first spotted by the folks at TG Daily. It has the much-touted TraceMonkey Javascript engine enabled, along with what TG Daily interprets as a “look and feel” that “appears to be final.” Mozilla had originally planned to have Firefox 3.1b2 locked down by early...

Awethumb is amaathing! Whittling might have been a hoax, but the Awethumb is all too real -- and all too freaking amazing. Yeah, we're not at all sure that these plastic thumbguards -- available in your choice of colors! -- will actually protect you from repetitive stress or even make typing easier, but all the dudes and dudettes on the El train will know you mean business when you slip 'em on. As an added bonus, lack of compatibility with the iPhone will allow you to express your disdain for touchscreens in a satisfyingly dramatic way -- if you can't rock it...
