Apple begins recommending Antivirus utilities to users It looks like the care free days when Mac owners could sit back and relax without having to worry about malware are indeed coming to an end - maybe. Last month we told you about two new pieces of OS X malware that had been discovered and while neither poses a significant threat in most people’s eyes, it is clearly a sign of things to come. As loyal and vocal as Mac computer users are, until recently they hardly represented a significant portion of the market. As such, those responsible for creating end user-targeted malware focused on Windows since...

8 stories of counterfeit components? I wonder if any of the parts are actually what they are labeled? Looks like the San Jose Flea Market or a very large version of the De Anza computer swap meet. - Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff: heheh, most of this stuff isn't counterfeit at all. They make it all just up the road. the software, though, is definitely not from Microsoft's factories. :-) - Robert Scoble
nobody does it better than RS. - Craig Mische

Steve Jobs: Blu-ray is a "bag of hurt" In a Q&A session after the launch of Apple’s new notebooks today, Steve Jobs called Sony’s Blu-ray a “bag of hurt” and stated that licensing the standard for Blu-ray hardware and software is currently too complex. Jobs then remarked that Apple is waiting for Blu-ray to “take off in the marketplace.” However, the company was quick to point out that it supports HD video -- as long as it's not on a disc. Speaking after Jobs, Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of marketing, noted iTunes already has the "best" HD movie and TV options. Apple has spent years developing...

The latest to offer up a juicy bit of gossip is Jason Calacanis, who went on record in an interview with CNET UK as saying that he has direct sources telling him Apple is developing a networked LCD HDTV that will have built-in Apple TV capabilities. Immediately, this brought up a smattering of conflicting ideas and opinions from a few of us at Giz as to whether or not this makes sense. And if it does happen, we almost...

AOL updates AIM for Mac, first time in four yearsAOL has finally removed the "away" message from its instant messaging clients for Mac computers. After a four-year lull in development of AIM for Macs, AOL recently released a new test version. The AIM for Mac Beta program adds a laundry list of features to bring the software up to speed with its Windows counterpart. With a renewed attention to Apple computer users, AOL is hoping to add the long-ignored group to its buddy list. But the Internet company (a unit of media giant Time Warner) may have a difficult time rekindling that friendship, with the myriad of options that...

Apple is firing on all cylinders as iPhone App Store grows Apple seems to be making quite a little side business for itself out of iPhone App Store sales. Last November I laid out a plan for Apple to become larger than Google based mainly around a "tripod" of profit-generating businesses: the Mac and related software sales; the iPod and iTunes Music Store sales; and the iPhone and App Store sales. Apple sold almost 2.5 million Macs last quarter, a new record for the company showing 43 percent revenue growth year over year. The company sold more than 11 million iPods as well, delivering 7 percent revenue growth YoY. Apple...

Is Jobs's health anything to worry about? "Steve's health is a private matter." That's how Apple addressed the question of CEO Steve Jobs's health during the quarterly earnings conference call yesterday. Not very reassuring for shareholders, especially from a company that didn't disclose an earlier health scare for nine months. Earlier this summer, Fake Steve Jobs author Dan Lyons quit writing Fake Steve in part because of concerns over his health. "I just didn't want to get into a situation where I had to say 'oh, well its been a good run but it's in bad taste now,'" Lyons later told the Industry Standard. Jobs' health...
