Klockwerks Chronulator This is a wonderful confluence of two personal favorites: a ShareBrained Chronulator meter clock kit, and the artistic vision of clockmaker Roger Wood. I don't know if this one is for sale or already spoken for. Side note on the Chronulator kit: they've been sold out for a while now, but Jared is hard at work readying version 2. More info on that when I get my hands on the new kit. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Arts | Digg this!...

Presenting the Future MacroFor Atlassian's 7th FedEx Day I implemented a Confluence macro that would defer rendering its body until the full page was received by the client. The body of the macro would then be sent back to Confluence for rendering via AJAX while the user was presented with a loading placeholder. As the rendering of the body occurs in the future with respect to the original page rendering pipeline, I called this functionality the Future Macro. It is ideally suited for rendering content that is retrieved from external sources where high latency can hold up the delivery of other content on...

Keynote: The Future of Technology in Aged CareLast week I gave a keynote speech on The Future of Technology in Aged Care at the Aged Care Association Annual Congress. In this case I wanted to take the audience on a big-picture journey into where aged care is going, which went down very well between the many high-detail presentations at the conference. I was invited as a general futurist, though I have in fact written and being interviewed on the topic of aged care frequently before, particularly on the role of robots in aged care, including in a feature article in Newsday. Below is a brief snapshot of...

Who Is The Real President Of America Right Now?Your country, the United States, comes closer and closer to the brink of complete economic and militaristic (but mostly economic these days!) ruination with every passing second. Oh, don’t blame yourself, dear reader. Blame the government — yeah, you know the one! Because, due to a confluence of distant inaugurations, inept lame ducks and quietly ambitious second-tier Washington officials, we’ve got one foot in the Great New Depression II with the other about to step in… and yet we have no idea who is actually running the country! By our count, we have three (3) presidents right now, and they’re...

10 Tips for Monetizing Social Traffic Through Virtual CurrencyThis is a guest post by Anu Shukla, CEO of Offerpal Media. Offerpal Media is a leading “managed offer platform” for social applications, virtual worlds, games, and community-oriented websites. The Opportunity A new boon is taking place on the Internet. For community-oriented web publishers like social networks, social applications, virtual worlds, MMOGs and other social properties on which traditional advertising has produced such little revenue per user relative to other sites, a new market, led by the proliferation of virtual currency and virtual goods, is rapidly expanding. No one knows yet the exact size or potential of the market, though...

FedEx 9We recently held Atlassian's ninth "FedEx" competition, and it's time to share the results with you. FedEx is an Atlassian tradition that requires a little explanation: Every 3 months or so, we put aside our regular development work for a day and a half, and work on our own crazy ideas. At the end, everyone gets three minutes to present their project to the rest of the company, and we all vote to determine the winner of the prized FedEx trophy. Why do we do this? We see a number of benefits: Firstly, it gives us an opportunity to get...

Universal Wiki Converter v50 released! I'm pleased to announce that we just released the newest version of the Universal Wiki Converter (full release notes). We're up to version 50, and this release boasts a nice new set of user and developer features as well as improvements to existing wiki converters. The Universal Wiki Converter (UWC) is a standalone application which converts pages from other wikis to Confluence. It's also an extensible framework, allowing users with wikis that aren't currently supported to add their own converters. Among the list of new features, we have a new command line interface for those users who prefer to...

We love this story. Back in July we wrote about the inspiring experience of Peldi Guilizzoni, a lone software developer who'd built a web design mock-up tool called Balsamiq and who was opening up his financial records on his blog to show everyone how things were going. We'd been following his progress since before he launched, but just 6 weeks after Balsamiq hit the market at roughly $79 per license, we wrote that Peldi had already made $10k in revenue. That was a cute story, but now it's been just 5 months and today Peldi reports that he's just cleared...

What I Am Reading and Focusing OnWe had a great event tonight at the Confluence Networking Corporate Blogging Panel. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the event. It was awesome! I wanted to link some posts I have been concentrating on lately. I thought it would be a good digression from my daily rants! 1. 123SocialMedia: Social Media Politics - How Fast Things Change I have been fascinated with the social media and marketing extravaganza known as the recent political campaigns. Barry Hurd talks about the transition from traditional media to new media by politicians. 2. Andy DeSoto: Social Media Basics Provide Necessary Spice...

Alan Rusbridger: Local papers are vital - and must be savedWhen Michael Grade addressed a Royal Television Society breakfast just over three weeks ago he trailed a heavy hint that ITV's commitment to regional news was not long for this world. Some people think ITV could well throw in the towel a good deal earlier than any of the public predictions so far.The good news is that there already exists another network of local news providers in the UK: they are called local newspapers. The bad news is that they are in some considerable difficulty themselves. As the Society of Editors gathers in Bristol for its annual conference today there is...

Today I stumbled on a twitter account [via @howardlindzon] called @stocktwits. Among other things going on there, they are using the dollar sign ('$') preceding corporate 'tickers' (stock market acronyms) to set up an index of tweets on each referenced company's history. Very cool. Example: RT @s_m_i: Final result of $LEH CDS auction - 8.625 cents on the dollar 11:34 AM Oct 10th from web To search the index, you need to visit the companion site: www.stocktwits.com. Here's the search result for $LEH: StockTwits.com - Real Investors. Real Ideas. Real Time., originally uploaded by Stowe Boyd. Stocktwits recasts the historic...

Down and Dirty with Async APEXI just came out of an APEX deep dive session at Dreamforce where the code was flying thick and the discussions focused on the new Force.com for Amazon Web Services toolkit, Dynamic APEX and Async APEX. I couldn't help but think back to much of the discussions from this mornings keynote which focused on convergent clouds and the power of combining services and functionality from the major players in the cloud computing space. It seems that many of the new technical introductions so far have focused around enabling this confluence. One of these core enablers, the new @future annotation in...

The Woodstock of Cloud ComputingWell what a way to start my blogging career at Salesforce.com! I just came out of the Dreamforce 2008 opening keynote which ran the gamut of topics from new product announcements, changing the way we look at cloud computing and finally how the vision of an American singing icon, Neil Young, is reinventing what is possible in the troubled automotive industry - and it is all being powered by force.com. So my dilemma is what to blog on first. I took so many notes that I am going to have to split the content over multiple entries. I finally decided...

Balsamiq Mockups: Deliberately Not SlickAs a developer and some-time designer, I’m always on the lookout for tools to make communicating with customers easier. For many things, the textual tools that web workers reach for are sufficient: email, wikis, project management systems, instant messages, and so on. But sometimes you just need to draw a picture to get your point across. The latest tool I’ve run across for this is Balsamiq Mockups - and it’s a nice tool indeed. When you run the desktop version, you get an empty window that looks like a notebook page (complete with spiral binding) and a menu bar of...

Facebook May Be Growing Too Fast. And Hitting The Capital Markets Again. [del.icio.us]The company is likely spending well over a $1 million per month on electricity alone, say experts we’ve spoken with. Bandwidth is likely another $500,000 or more per month on top of that. The company has earmarked $100 million to buy 50,000 servers this year and next. And sources say they’ve been buying one NetApp 3070 storage system per week just to keep up with all this user generated content. At up to $2 million each, that adds up quickly - we’ve heard estimates that they may have spent as much as $30 million this year alone with the company....

Johnny Lee: Success Through Rapid Prototyping & Sharing Do it now, do it fast, get feedback, fix do it again. Nowadays the TOTE algorithm is sped up to ludicrous speed -or as fast as our communication tools will allow us to operate. Core 77 shares with us the story of Johnny Lee, formerly of Carnegie Mellon University. His homemade video of how to hack a Wiimote into a VR display has brought him a TED talk, a bunch of job offers and millions of Youtube views. The point of the story is that a perfect storm of user friendly technologies has made it possible for everyday people...
