With Battlestar Galactica returning in less than two months, anticipation is at fever pitch over the identity of the show's Final Cylon. We've looked at the clues to date and offered some theories of our own, but with SyFyPortal claiming that it knows the character's identity for sure - and then offering up five possible choices to choose from - it's time to look at it from another angle: Which character would be ruined if they turned out to be the Final Cylon? While Charlie Jane isn't convinced by SyFy Portal's claim of spoilage, at least three of the five...
There’s not much in a web worker’s life that beats a cheap or free phone service. Perhaps a supporting role in one of David Pogue’s next iPhone video musicals might, but odds are slim. Especially for me and my voice. Or maybe it’s because I have a face for podcasting, I don’t know. I do know however, that the iPhone Mr. Pogue sang about many moons ago can be a powerful VoIP tool if you have the right applications installed. Here’s a quick look, complete with links to the iTunes App Store, at four inexpensive or downright free solutions that...

The greenest race on earth, the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, is heating up, like Salma Hayek dancing on a waffle iron. The competition will award $10 million dollars to the teams that win a stage race for clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPG or the energy equivalent (MPGe). Twenty-two contenders have been accepted to registered team status, in the multimillion dollar competition designed to inspire a new generation of viable, super fuel-efficient vehicles. These registered teams, representing 5 countries, 10 states and 28 vehicles altogether, are among the first to have submitted their registration applications, a crucial...
This is the first image of the Volvo S60 Concept, set to debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Volvo is calling the concept a preview of the 2010 Volvo S60. Volvo had better be careful or people will completely forget about the nameplate's stodgy past as the S60 concept is almost beautiful beyond belief. It takes on one of the final remaining traditional Volvo design elements, those normally straight, strong shoulder lines running font to back are reinterpret it in a curvaceous, smooth, sinewy line. The headlights are swept up and back and the roof line at the...

We wondered if last week SNL's Joe Biden cold opening might be signaling the end of Fred Armisen's tenure as Barack Obama. Now word comes that Lorne Michaels is in fact auditioning four black comedians to take over the role. Speculation is that the four contenders are The Colbert Report's Jordan Carlos, The Daily Show's Wyatt Cenac, (recently canceled) MAD TV's Jordan Peele and 30 Rock writer/Derrick Comedy's Donald Glover. There's no word if casting for an ebony comedienne to portray Michelle is likely to follow. But with Armisen out as Barack, that's one less politically incorrect hurdle for the...

This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services. Since kicking off the voting round of the Open Web Awards yesterday, we’ve seen nearly 10,000 votes cast across 26 different categories. In the Mainstream Social Networks category, Twitter has the early lead, but has some tough competition from last year’s winners, Facebook and Netlog. With voting open until November 30th, perhaps one of these contenders can make a run for the award: Dotblu – A social network geared primarily towards teens, where users compete in various games to earn virtual...
There're one or two contenders in the netbook-for-desktop nettop game, but with MSI's new Wind Neton machines it could get a bit interesting. Atom-based, of course, the PCs will come in 22-inch, 18.5 and 15.6-inch screen versions, dubbed M22, M19 and M16, and the all-in-one iMac alikes look like they'll have optional touchscreens. Releases are due in January for the M19, Feb for the M16 and March for the M22 at $500, $400 and $800 respectively. Oh, the M22 has a Blu-ray drive option—Like I said, this could get interesting. Filed under: Fun, Internet, web 2.0 Since Twitter decided to take care of the frequent outages that used to plague its servers, I've actually started using it here and there. It's a nice service, and definitely has useful applications. You've only got to look as far as sites like NowPublic and Twubble to see how the API can be put to good use. However, there are a mountain of applications feeding off it and they're not all contenders for Best in Show. These five definitely are, but only if it's a show dedicated to sucking at Twitter API use. TwitemperatureFinally, a...
