Filed under: Parties, Books, Trends, Lists, Cookbook of the Day, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year's, WinterHow about some good news from the business world for a change? That sound you hear is the collective sigh of immense relief from workers in office towers and business parks country-wide, for it turns out that this year many offices are choosing to forego their annual office holiday party. But wait, it gets better -- for, in many of those offices that are still having parties, the event is not just being scaled down financially but scaled up culturally. Welcome to the phenomenon of the...
The difference between what drug companies tell the government and doctors suggests that they're cooking the books, which could mislead doctors making prescriptions. Of 33 new drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001 and 2002, one-fifth of supporting clinical trials were not published in medical journals, according to a new study. And those results that were published were often more positive than what companies presented to the FDA in their applications. As a result, potentially unreliable data is being used to promote drugs on which billions of dollars and thousands of lives may ride. "Some studies...
It must be the holidays with all of the photobook and customized book news on the wire the last week. Today we've learned that NY-based SharedBook has announced a new partnership with LucasBooks that will bring Star Wars fans the ability to customize and personalize a book. Star Wars: Millennium Falcon is SharedBook's first personalized front list title. The book will be ready for shipping tomorrow. The book includes your own personalized photo and dedication. I like these types of distribution deals because it opens SharedBook to a new market and could help drive sales of their standard product line....
Xerox is a name well known for its photostat machines and copiers, and this time round they have released something to do with those machines in a sense - the EverFlat Paper. Wait a minute, am I missing out on something here? All the time I thought that you couldn’t get any flatter than ordinary paper, and here we have Xerox defying convention with the EverFlat Paper. What is it all about, anyway? For starters, the EverFlat paper enables both photos and books to lay completely flat, allowing them to look more appealing to consumers. More explanation will come right...
Cookstr.com—created by Will Schwalbe and Katie Workman, both former publishers who worked on dozens of successful cookboooks—just launched and is a true evolution in cooking sites. Considering the millions of recipes online you'd think this would be difficult to do, but Cookstr.com features recipes exclusively from cook books. Many of these recipes have never been published online because of copyright issues, but Cookstr.com has partnered both with the chefs (each of whom has a dedicated author page) and also with their publishers to make this possible. The all star list currently includes Alice Waters, Nigella Lawson, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Jamie...

Jenn Pentland While we've all been eating our entire lives, recently there has been a huge increase in awareness of where our food comes from, how it's produced, and how that affects our bodies and our environment. Along with this awareness has come a cornucopia of books focusing on food. There are books about what to eat, how to eat, where to eat, why to eat, and, I'm sure, when to eat. In an effort to help you narrow your search for the essential volumes to add to your book shelf I've compiled my list of the essential food...
From Recipes I've gotten into a habit of cooking a pot of dried beans every Sunday, then finding ways to use them throughout the week (soupy beans make a wonderful breakfast with a fried egg on top). Recently I cooked chickpeas instead of the usual kidney or black beans, and with lots to spare plus an itching for soup, I set out to see what I could find. This Puglian recipe, which I found on the ever-marvelous 101 Cookbooks, won my heart with its talk of fried shards of pasta and all of 4 ingredients. Normally the soup is made...
Filed under: Raves & Reviews, On the BlogsI am a recipe collector. I have them saved in word documents on my computer and starred entries in my feed reader, as well as in notebooks, file folders and dog-earred cookbooks. I also have an old wooden index card holder (for 4 x 6 notecards) in which I tuck favorite recipes. For those of you who also like to have those cherished recipes jotted down on index cards, here's a way to keep them close at hand in your gorgeous kitchen (and if your kitchen is on the funky side - like...
From Serious Eats "Rule #3: Man, completely unaided, chooses a 'published' recipe from any source, or Internet. Getting the recipe from 'her' cookbooks is allowed, but man gets bonus points if the recipe isn't already somewhere in the house." May we suggest the Serious Eats Recipes archive? Filed under: Cookbook of the DayI first discovered Breakfast, Lunch, Tea: The Many Little Meals of Rose Bakery last week at Anthropologie (during the same visit when I spotted these very fun measuring cups) and upon my glance, I was completely smitten. This is one of those cookbooks that has the ability to evoke a lifestyle and manner of cooking that is appealing, romantic and totally homey all in one masterful stroke. I left the store that day and headed straight home to my computer to buy a copy (hey, it was more than $10 cheaper on Amazon than it...
Filed under: Dairy, Slashfood Ate, SodaI'm often surprised to realize that many of the groceries I buy can be simply made at home. I tend to presume that cottage cheese just grows on supermarket shelves, for example, or that making vanilla requires complex machinery. So while it may be more convenient to throw these items into your cart than to cultivate them in your own kitchen, try making any of these eight treats at home the next time you're feeling bold. Homemade cottage cheese from Serious Eats Homemade vanilla extract from Simply Recipes Homemade peanut butter cups from Baking Bites...
Filed under: Feast Your Eyes, FallHalloween may now be over, but so many of the fall foods we associate with the holiday are still perfectly appropriate up through the end of November (when we shift into December, I figure it's time to surrender the pumpkins and apples). This means that just because you didn't manage to make a batch of caramel apples before October expired, doesn't mean that you have to wait another year to do so. The picture you see above comes from Everybody Likes Sandwiches. She adapted her recipe from one posted by Heidi at 101 Cookbooks. Thanks...
From Serious Eats We've already got a bunch of great submissions for the first annual Serious Eats Pumpkin Carving Contest, but here's a little nudge reminding you there's still time. Polls will close on Saturday at 6PM EST. So far, we've seen cereal references, a tragic injury (how's that thumb?), and a pomegranate sneak into the mix. After tonight's trick-or-treating, add your carving creation for a chance to win cookbooks and Viking knives. Upload your photos on Photograzing. (You'll need to log into your Serious Eats account, or sign up for free.)...
