Jesse Kornbluth: The Coolest Tool: A Swiss Army Knife with a 2MB Memory Stick — A friend wrote to say she'd found the right gift for every man in her family --- and it was small, affordable and easy-to-wrap.. I read on, interest mounting. It was a Swiss Army Knife. I deflated. That? Again? In fact, not again --- where you might expect to find a toenail clipper, this knife has a two-gigabyte memory stick. And just to underscore its coolness, the body of the knife is translucent, not the standard-issue red. At $75.68, this really is quite the impressive gift. (For $34.85, you can get a similar knife, just with 512 megabytes of memory...

Canstruction Exhibit in New York CityFrom Serious Eats: New York If you could play Jenga with cans, and make something cool with it that didn't topple, that would describe the Canstruction 2008 exhibit at the World Financial Center. Since the artists were from top architectural and engineering firms across North America, the results actually were cool. To magnify the coolness, all food will be donated to City Harvest after the exhibit closes on December 2. The one above is called "DunCAN Donut," and was made from 3,241 cans, including sardines and tuna. Mmm, a sardine donut! More photos of can art, after the jump. This...

This week at Mobile Tech Manor #18- an imperfect Storm This week has been a short one due to the holiday but it's been packed with activity.  This column is my look back at the past week at my home office, Mobile Tech Manor, and if you've read it before you know there's no telling what I'll share with you.  There's usually gadget news and my impressions of using them and I also share my experiences with new software I use to keep my office running. This week has covered a lot of varied ground.   I'll recount my installation and usage of the new Parallels Desktop 4.0 on the...

iPhunny: be careful deploying Google Apps to your usersIf you are one of the hordes of IT heroes supporting iPhones in your organization, take heed. Be very careful demonstrating the coolness of Google Mobile App's Voice Search. Today, a co-worker called to ask me about Google on her phone, and I talked her through getting the app installed. As we were ending the call, I mentioned that she could now talk to her iPhone to get searches done. Of course, now having said this, I was expected to demonstrate it. I had a few minutes to wait while some software installed on a laptop I'm getting ready for...

What Have They Done to Hiro and Sylar? [Heroes Recap] Last night's intriguing episode of Heroes, called "It's Coming," brought us deep into the crises suffered by central characters Hiro and Sylar. As one man regresses and the other moves forward in his self-transformation, it's becoming obvious that Heroes cannot deal with the idea of making Hiro into a true hero. Why does Sylar get to be the new force of great justice in this show, while Hiro is consigned to the role of cutey clown? Spoilers ahead. There's a lot of coolness in "It's Coming," including a showdown between mind-reading Parkman, speedy Daphne, and the whole Petrelli clan....

The most awesome datacenter ever!I came across the coolest looking datacenter today, and probably the coolest looking place, bar none, ever built (thanks to Royal Pingdom). It was built by one of Sweedens largest ISP’s as a new high profile datacenter, and yes, it’s under ground, made to look like Dr. Evil’s mountain of extreme doom, with fog machines and all inside the workplace! If you’ve ever seen something you’ve really wanted in your cubicle I’m sure you’ll find it here. The workplace looks like a paintball arena, there are weird waterfall things, colors, lights, and of course it’s in a cavern. I always...

Margo Lion: A Warm Heart for Mr. Cool — Okay, he's tall and lean and moves with the kind of grace reserved for left coast, closely-guarded celebrity sorts. His sunglasses are hip and his civilian "uniform" is not your usual businessman/politician's sartorial statement. And, of course, he doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve or indulge in confessional rhetoric. But isn't it time for those who mistook president-elect Barack Obama's outward demeanor, his hard won confidence and his grown-up reserve for "too cool for school" to revise their reviews and take a new measure of the man? For those of us who have been on this unlikely journey from...

Part Nine In a Monthly SeriesNovember brings a bit of coolness in the air as the summer heat becomes a memory and most of us in the Northern Hemisphere turn to Winter. But while it might be getting colder outside, there's still a lot of hot writing going on, both from sites you have heard of and many you likely haven't. For the last nine months, I've highlighted five blogs each month that I think warrant your checking out. Each of the bloggers highlighted over this time period has been added to my Google Reader list, via Toluu, and has, to...

Apple Passes RIM And Becomes Number 2 Smartphone Maker An analyst has confirmed that Apple has made it to number 2 where smartphone vendors are concerned.  The iPhone has become a holder of 17.3 percent of the market share with RIM trailing at 15.2 percent.  Apple also came in with the highest marks in customer satisfaction, operation, physical design, operating system, battery aspects, and features.  RIM could bounce back to the 2nd place mark with the Bold and Storm, but with the growing sales of iPhone and the “coolness” of the Apple brand, it will certainly be a challenge for RIM.  The results are due to the 6.9...

Seabright PC430 "micro PC" spurns keyboard, not coolnessFiled under: Handhelds, Laptops Wow, where to begin? The Seabright PC430 is going to be a, uh... fantastic piece of machinery should it ever exist, though from the looks of it, it may have a bit of an identity crisis. The precious little 4.3-inch Windows CE 5.0 (the photo shows XP but whatever) clamshell's got a 533MHz Samsung 2442A CPU, 128MB of SDRAM, between 1GB and 4GB of flash memory, and a USB 2.0 port on top of a host of optional features (GPS, DVB-T digital TV, WiFi, the ability to tell you the future). The tiny super-computer also boasts...

RJ Eskow: Barack's Big Gamble ... And His Vision — History is a dialogue between humanity and time. And humanity's nothing more than the sum of individual behaviors - millions of them - behaviors that eventually become currents and patterns only visible at a distance. Barack Obama saw something in those patterns that everyone else missed. And he was sure enough of his vision to risk everything ... everything ... on what he saw. Remember that period in August, right before the convention, when it looked like Obama was going the route of so many past Democratic candidates? When it looked like he was reaching out a conciliatory hand toward...

MacBook Air Shipping Delay Fouls Thanksgiving Plans For One The excitement for Thinnovation has quickly turned into frustration for some buyers of the entry-level MacBook Air since Apple announced in an email apology that new MBA notebooks will not be shipping until November 24th. The delay is reported to only be affecting the entry-level MacBook Air 1.6GHz model with a 120GB SATA hard drive listed at $1,799.00. The anticipated delivery date is 11/29/08 after Thanksgiving."A quick investigation into the matter reveals the hold-up is a direct result of either component or supply chain issues surrounding the 1.6GHz model's standard 120GB SATA hard drive." according to a report by...

Robert Kennedy Jr. On Obama Administration: If Asked I Will Serve — Expressing deep satisfaction -- almost relief -- with the election of Barack Obama yesterday, Robert Kennedy Jr., the longtime environmental activist and member of the Democratic Party's most cherished family, said he would serve the next president if asked. "You know what, I would be of service in any way that the administration asked me to be," Kennedy told the Huffington Post. "But I am also very happy and I believe I am being effective doing the stuff I am doing currently." On Wednesday, Politico reported that Obama was strongly considering putting Kennedy at the head of the Environmental Protection...

Buenos Aires Wants to be Cleaner Photo credit: Buenos Aires government. While the proposed new garbage management plan for Buenos Aires is discussed, the city government has launched a campaign to encourage clean habits in its people. Under the theme 'Clean play' (Jugá Limpio in Spanish), the set of ads try to put some coolness into throwing things in trash cans, plus two websites targeted to kids and adults offer information about activities and interactive tools. Even though we would have appreciated a campaign to encourage recycling b......

MTV and MySpace Launch Video Ad Deal with Fingerprinting TechnologyIf you thought YouTube’s click-to-buy feature was neat for music labels, allowing them to add links to purchase music on pirated videos featuring that music, you’ll love this: MTV has partnered with MySpace to identify videos posted to MySpace that are copyrighted by MTV, using audio and visual fingerprint technology. And here’s the good part: instead of getting medieval on pirated videos’ hineys, MTV gets to add ads. The fingerprinting technology, provided by Auditude, is apparently so good that they’re encouraging MySpace users to upload all the pirated MTV Networks content they want—including such long banned shows as The Colbert...

Ford’s new HUD dash looks pretty sweetSure, we’ve heard it all when it comes to Ford jokes. Found On Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily, etc. Say what you like about Ford, you can’t deny the coolness of their SmartGauge LCD panels in their new 2010 hybrids. Instead of the usual boring analog dials, Ford gives you a LCD screen cluster and even some animations. Notice the fuel gauge. Nice to look at, easy to find and functional. The best part about using an LCD display is that it’s fairly customizable. You can display battery charge, GPS and Satellite radio coverage, maybe even current mp3 track...

Netflix HD Streams Coming to XboxThe Netflix hits just keep on comin’. We’ve known for a while that the movie rental company was going to make its streaming service available to Xbox 360 users. But what we didn’t know is that it was going to offer movies in HD. Hot diggety, the battle for your TV just got wayyyy more exciting. Gadget sites Gizmodo and Engadget got a preview of the can’t-come-soon-enough (it’s being released on Nov. 19) update of the Xbox Live service, the “New Xbox Experience.” Part of the upgrade includes the Netflix capability, which appears to work similarly to the Roku’s Netflix...
