Evidence From Dirty Teeth: Ancient Peruvians Ate WellStarch grains preserved on human teeth reveal that ancient Peruvians ate a variety of cultivated crops including squash, beans, peanuts and pacay. Starch grain analysis of human dental remains should prove to be a powerful means to directly study ancient diets....

Mac Users: Please Take a Quick Survey About SecurityThere’s been a bit of a kerfuffle this week about a subject that crops up every so often and is always good for some spirited debate: Whether Mac users should be as proactive about protecting themselves against security attacks as their Windows-using friends. The Washington Post’s Brian Krebs noticed Apple recommending the use of anti-virus [...]...

Not Your Puritans' TurkeyAlexis Madrigal applauds science for super-sizing your turkey dinner:The traditional Thanksgiving dinner reflects the enormous amount of change that foods and the food systems that produce them have undergone, particularly over the last 50 years. Nearly all varieties of crops have experienced large genetic changes as big agriculture companies hacked their DNA to provide greater hardiness and greater yields. The average pig, turkey, cow and chicken have gotten larger at an astounding rate, and they grow with unprecedented speed. A modern turkey can mature to a given weight at twice the pace of its predecessors. In comparison with old-school agriculture...

Tillage, Rotation Impacts Peanut CropsA recent study looked at the different effects of tillage and rotation practices on peanut crops in the southern United States to determine if the rising trend towards reduced tillage would have an effect on yields and the occurrence of pests. Peanut farmers have thus far been reluctant to incorporate reduced tillage as it has not been seen as a viable practice for this particular crop....

Beaujolais Nouveau Has ArrivedFrom Serious Eats Photograph from jetalone on Flickr Every year on the third Thursday in November, corks pop at midnight in celebration of the arrival of the year's Beaujolais Nouveau, a light, fruity red wine from the Beaujolais region in France. While the wine's debut is a celebration for its home country, in the United States this wine symbolizes Thanksgiving. It's also cheap, easy to find, and very drinkable. Gary Vaynerchuk, author of 101 Great Wines, described the wine as having, "Aromas of fresh rhubarb pie and little hints of black pepper." The flavor, he wrote, is, "Full of beautiful,...

"In the waning months of the Bush administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has joined the ranks of federal agencies rushing through new regulations that weaken protections for human health and the environment. USDA has released a proposed rule that would significantly weaken oversight of all genetically engineered crops, and which continue to allow companies to grow food crops engineered to produce drugs and industrial chemicals." - Jason Wehmhoener

Biofuel Advocate Challenges Notion That Fuel Displaces Food In the last year or so, biofuels – at least first generation biofuels such as those derived from corn and soybeans – have been criticized for driving up global food prices. The argument is simple: growing crops for biofuels reduces the amount of crops grown for food and raises food prices. However, Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) issued a statement today claiming that the high food prices seen this past year correlate strongly with oil prices, not biofuel production. Now, obviously Mr. Greenwood is representing a lot of biofuel companies and he’s not...

Alpine Capsule Is Probably Aliens' Favorite Refuge on Earth [Architecture]Something weird must be going on in the Alps, because alien structures keep popping up like circles in the English crops and people insist on doing jacuzzi parties at 15,700 feet. Take this shiny Alpine Capsule, a beautiful—if not eerie—26-feet in diameter mountain shelter designed by Studio Lovegrove that seems to be made of mercury. In reality, the shelter uses a double glass structural skin, offering a 360 degree view of the Dolomites at an altitude of 2,100 meters. The Alpine Capsule will be powered by external solar panels and vertical wind turbines. Located in the Italian Alps, construction will...

Announcing SketchUp 7It's my pleasure to announce the launch of Google SketchUp 7. If you've been putting off getting familiar with Google Earth's 3D modeling "other half", now's the time to do something about it. After all, nothing makes a nicer holiday gift for your spouse than a 3D model of your dwelling or dream dwelling. Well, almost nothing. So what's new in SketchUp 7? Lots of stuff, but here are some of the highlights I think you'll find most interesting (take a look at the SketchUp website for a complete rundown). Some of the improvements we made to SketchUp 7 are especially useful for beginners. For example:Edges now...

iGala Wireless Photo Frame Has Touchscreen, Own Gmail Account [Digital Photos]Normally I'd say digital photo frame, splidgital photo frame...but iGala's one has a couple of features that make it stand out. It's an 8-inch touchscreen, with standard 4:3 ratio 800 x 600 pixels so you get less irritating crops or letterboxing, plus its wireless and has 1GB of internal memory. But it's actually got its own Gmail address so you can email photos to it directly from anywhere. Plus you don't even need a PC to set it up: it has its own interface. Neat stuff, for a not-too expensive $239. [Digitalpictureframereview]...

Eight Green Music Festivals That RockImage Credit: Getty ImagesFestivals are not a modern day invention. The roots of the celebratory gathering go as far back as the Egyptians, who used to toast the annual overflow of the Nile, which irrigated crops. Whether it be religion (the most common theme in the past), the solar or lunar calendar, or music, food, and art, festivals continue to be fantastic socializing tools. Unfortunately, with so many pre-packaged products and high-voltage effects, festivals have become known for being relatively anti-environment these days. Luckily, there are at least eight music festivals out there really st......

BlackBerry 8900 Curve crops up on in corner of Rogers website We know it’s on its way and that and should be released in Germany within the month but for those eagerly awaiting the release of BlackBerry 8900 Curve in the Americas - with a particular emphasis placed upon the Bold-less souls of T-Mobile - the latest Curve-related gaffe is a bit more than careless and cruel. Rogers has listed the 8900 on its games download site which is a peculiar and presumed error since it doesn’t even list the 8220 Pearl Flip which was announced on the 4th of this month. Perhaps someone made an error and meant to...
