236: What's Gonna Happen To... Jerome Corsi? — In a new series, 23/6 takes a look at all the McCain allies, GOP bagmen, and far-right smear-meisters who are kind of f**ked in the wake of the Obama win, and we ask, "What's gonna happen to that guy?" Doughy-faced rosacea sufferer Jerome Corsi was a pretty big deal in 2004. The co-author of the Swift-boating "Unfit For Command" deserves a lot of credit for helping George Bush get elected to a second term. "Unfit" was bought by the truckload and Corsi rocketed to fame as one of the far-right's top pathological liars. In 2008, Corsi tried to see if...

Another Microsoftie joins Yahoo's new cult of personality [Hires]Heavy.com continues to get lighter; Eric Hadley, who only joined the funny-videos-for-guys startup a year ago as chief marketing officer, has joined Yahoo as its VP of advertiser and partner marketing. He'd previously worked for a decade at Microsoft. We see the hand of Joanne Bradford in this; she's the former MSN chief who now runs ad sales at Yahoo. The pattern here? Yahoo has lacked a strong sales leader since the departure of Wenda Harris Millard, whom President Sue Decker disgracefully drove out of the company. With the hiring of Hadley to run marketing and Jeff Dossett to run...

The L WordDavid Kurtz wonders what kind of mandate Obama will have if he wins:...what will an Obama landslide translate into in the first year he's in office? It's not clear to me. One of the most toxic effects of the decline of the two parties as political institutions and the rise of the modern TV-based political campaign, with its cult of personality politics, is that the election becomes a referendum on the candidates themselves, rather than on broad policies or platforms....

Rick Foster: Why We Vote For The Happiest Cavemen — I rail at the notion that American voting is all about the Cult of Personality, guilt by association, and frantic character assassination. It would be so civilized if we voted for a political philosophy or, at least, a platform of ethical principles. But most of us don't. What we vote for is a set of profoundly embedded personal characteristics - those difficult-to-describe elements that make one candidate more trustworthy, more caring, and more charismatic. This is the candidate we want to follow on the path, and to whom we entrust our lives. In the American political system, we will give...

Jerome Corsi, Obama Smear Author, Detained In Kenya — NAIROBI, Kenya — The American author of a best-selling book attacking Barack Obama is being detained in Kenya because he does not have a work permit, a senior immigration official said Tuesday. "Sit Down, Boy"The McCain-Palin campaign stumbles across what Steve Schmidt really wants to say to Obama:Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told...

In defense of Sarah Palin, the elitist media version(Yes, my regular readers know what I'm doing, but I think I'm contributing here. We'll see what happens.)Newsweek is in the process of publishing its own point-counterpoint on Sarah Palin (but without the "Jane, you ignorant slut!" commentary.)The counterpoint is provided by noted journalist Karl Rove, who says the following:She is the governor of a state with an $11 billion operating budget, a $1.7 billion capital budget and nearly 29,000 employees; she's got more executive experience than any candidate for president or vice president this year....[B]eing able to connect with, and inspire, the public is an asset —not a liability....Ronald...

By All Means Let Us Rewrite the Rules for our Dear LeaderEw, gross, Bloomberg wants a third term as mayor so he can still be a publicly elected official come the 2012 elections, while not having to live in freaking Albany. This is good, it's good when we suspend executive term limits so an extremely wealthy pandering populist doesn't have to step down when his cult of personality is at its peak. In his announcement, Mr. Bloomberg, a former Wall Street trader and founder of a billion-dollar financial data firm, is expected to argue that the financial crisis unfolding in New York City demands his steady hand and proven business acumen....

Ecclesiastes meets the Messiah, Taft in a Boat, and why we didn't Click with DickRed Stick Rant wrote a post that looks at an Obama grassroots campaign song and compares it to the types of songs that North Koreans spontaneously compose in honor of their Revered Leader.Judge for yourself:I did a YouTube search, and found that children aren't the only ones singing Obama's praises. Here are some adults doing the same:And perhaps "cult of personality" is the appropriate way to describe these songs. But upon further reflection, I realized that Barack Obama is not the first one to have campaign songs sung about him. Clifford, there is nothing new under the sun. (Actually, in...

Guitar Hero pedal controllerHere’s a useful mod for any rock god who needs to give his hands a bit of a rest after playing Cult Of Personality for the millionth time. Built by Ben Heck, it basically “replaces the strum and whammy bar from a standard guitar, allowing you to use a single hand for the chords.” Check out a boring video below of a song being played while using them. I really like the look of these. They look like half that thing you use in a shoe store to measure your feet and half rock boot. [Ben Heck]...

Jackson Williams: As Storm Clouds Gather, Obama Needs to Take Arsenio Hall's Advice: "Let's Get Busy!" — The Sept. 12 NY Times has a story that no doubt speaks to millions of us: "Obama's Tone Sharpens as Party Frets." It's about time. I've been getting antsy for weeks, and it only worsened when this quote jumped out the other day: "This election is not about issues. This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates." - Rick Davis, John McCain campaign manager Pretty brazen comment. It certainly fits how the Republicans would love to see things play out, especially since Americans have been unhappy for years over "issues" like the Iraq...

Open Thread and Diary RescueThis evening's Rescue Rangers are PaintyKat, vcmvo2, jennyjem, dadanation, shayera and srkp23, with jennyjem as editor. I'm starting tonight's Rescue list by promoting an idea from one of those kooky "Community Organizers." HippyWitch says the family that canvasses together, stays together, so On October 4th, Mobilize Your Family For Change. (jennyjem) Allenfire notes that The biggest danger we face is our complacency. He suggests actions that will increase the likelihood of victory in the fall. (vcmvo2) RogerShuler discusses how his political blogging led to unlawful termination in Irony in Palin Story Hits Close to Home. (srkp23) rhutcheson's diary highlights how...

When You Grow Up..."When will we ever have a black president? When will we have a woman president? You think it will ever happen? Can I be president when I grow up?" For decades, every fourth-grader in the country has asked these questions of their parents and teachers. And now, at long last, we know the answers. We are in the hangover of a historic and cathartic week - one in which Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Joe Biden, and Bill Clinton united the party behind their dynamic nominee well before Barack Obama gave one of the most stunning speeches of his...

A Real Messianic CelebrityIt's pretty sad when the worst thing you can say about your opponent is that he's too damn popular.  Yet that's where McCain and his Republican handlers are right now, questioning whether someone who actually can fill a football stadium full of enthusiastic activists is worthy of the presidency.  Far better to limit your audiences to a few dozen loyalists who can tolerate watching your cottage-cheese pallor swimming in a sea of green. The worst part of the tut-tutting about Obama's resonance with the voters is that Barack isn't even that good at the rock star thing.  He's really just...

Richard Laermer: Barack: The Non-White Candidate — Barack Obama isn't white. There, I said it. If only the media could say it we could move on, Instead of childishly hiding behind easy rhetoric to remind voters of his lack of whiteness. Obama's foreignness has always been an issue of contention with the mainstream press. Not one middle-of-the-road persona or outlet will make a specific claim to O's race; rather they passively allude to it by referring to the hopeful as Barack Hussein Obama or jumping on shallow, flimsy angles in an attempt to remind voters of his ethnicity. The nonstop media points out how much time he...

Max Blumenthal: Jerome Corsi's Long Strange, TripThese are good times for Jerome Corsi. Already notorious for his factually challenged book-length takedown of 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, "Unfit For Command," the sixty-one year old Corsi has another hit on his hands. His new book, "Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality" has made Corsi a hot commodity again on the right-wing radio circuit and the bane of the Obama campaign-- and catapulted to the top slot on the New York Times bestseller list. With his newfound notoriety, Bringing his pathographic anti-Obama narrative to hundreds of thousands of readers--and millions on radio and TV--just...

Corsi's Obama Book Inspires New Dissidents On Right — At last count, there are only four members of the dissident cell -- Peter Wehner, Ross Douthat, Jon Henke and John Hawkins -- conservatives who have broken ranks to harshly criticize Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality. All four make the case that Corsi presents a greater danger to the conservative movement and the Republican Party than to Barack Obama -- that for the right to take Corsi under its collective wing represents a moral and intellectual failing. This breakaway faction does not pull its punches as it challenges the ideological orthodoxy of fellow...

Peter Dreier: Jerome Corsi's "NonFiction Bestseller" Is Neither The publication on August 1 of Jerome Corsi's book, The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, has triggered considerable controversy in political and publishing circles, not only because the book is filled with many lies and distortions, but also because Corsi has long been affiliated with the nut-case wing of the conservative movement. Last Friday, John McCain exacerbated the storm when he responded to a reporter's question about the book by saying, "Gotta keep your sense of humor," which some observers took to be a casual endorsement of the book. Several anti-Obama books have recently arrived...
