Image by via CrunchBase Back when I started this site, it was completely free. Built on Blogger, images hosted at photobucket, and email provided through a service that had just sprung up at AOL: My eAddress. At the time this was fantastic because I could pick an email for the site which was close to the domain that I would eventually purchase. It turned out that AOL was not going to give users access to the domain outside of emails, so I bought up a couple of domains anyway. Still ended up continuing to use the emails since the...
If you’ve logged onto your Sprint account recently, you might have noticed that glaring red print under your “Online Tools” tab. So, if you relied heavily on your PCS Mail or Calendar for productivity, it’s all coming to an end apparently. It’s not news that mail is being discontinued - just consider this a friendly reminder. It was announced over the summer that all addresses ending in @sprintpcs.com will be shut down for good so save those messages before you’re locked out forever! What is new however, is that they’ve decided to shut down the PCS Calendar. Again, much...
Tiger Woods and GM will part ways after five years, a reported $40 million and a lot of Buick Enclave commercials. The press release from GM goes out if its way to suggest any link to what's happening in Washington, D.C is "purely coincidental" so, you know, feel free to blame Tiger's knees instead. But it's weird to see GM claiming the decision came after a search for "budget efficiencies" yet having nothing to do with the lack-of-federal funding. We do have to admit, Tiger Woods was a valuable acquisition for Buick, letting them appeal to the older, affluent golf-watching...

Even Google is getting into the downsizing spirit. It just announced that it is killing Lively, its browser-baseed virtual worlds that could be embedded into other Websites. Lively launched just last July. The death notice on the site says it will shut down on December 31, so we are adding Lively to the deadpool. Lively just never took off, and was extremely far afield for Google. A post on the Google Blog explains the decision: . . . we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business. We...
Today, the (for-now) non-profit Mozilla Foundation released its financial statements for 2007 (embedded below). Revenues for the organization behind the open-source Firefox browser were up 12 percent to $75 million, with search-related royalties from Google accounting for 88 percent of the total, or $66 million. (Another $2 million or so came from other search engines). Those revenues come from Mozilla’s portion of the search advertising revenues generated by the default Google search box in the Firefox browser. Google’s overall percentage of Mozilla’s revenues is even bigger than it was in 2006, when it accounted for 85 percent. And that...
All the buzz today has been around people selling their bodies to the highest startup bidder. Earlier this year we covered Leora's attempt to sell various body parts at conferences. Today we've learned that Mike Arrington has purchased a day of GirlInYourShirt. The girl behind GirlInYourShirt is Jenae and she will wear your shirt for a day for $100 and make some sort of videos on Seesmic, YouTube and Viddler. I can't wait to see these videos after watching her super exciting and gripping initial demo reel today. As the people on Hacker News point out, GirlInYourShirt won't wear anything but a full t-shirt...

Electronic retailer Circuit City plans to shutter 20 percent of its U.S. stores by December 31 and evaluate other cost reduction initiatives, it announced today, citing waning consumer confidence and the struggling financial markets. The move will close about 155 of its 700 stores, and result in layoffs of about 17 percent of its workforce. It will also reduce future store openings and renegotiate some leases. “The weakened environment has resulted in a slowdown of consumer spending, further impacting our business as well as the business of our vendors. The combination of these trends has strained severely our working...
We love Brando here at the Giz, with its wonderful array of strangely useful, odd and downright weird gizmos. And though Brian didn't quite manage to meet up with its owner recently to discuss all things gadgety, Brando's still got some good news in this economically woeful time: from now until December 31, there's no shipping fee from its online store. So if your significant other is in the running for a USB-powered, aromatherapy, LED-lit, Hello Kitty'd massaging cellphone charger as a Christmas gift, you know where to shop. [Brando]...
