This is New York City’s rather poor new bike rack design. The circular rack was the winner of the CityRacks Design Competition, and was picked from 200 entrants, most of which were equally impractical. The nameless hoop was designed by Denmark-based Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve. So, what’s wrong with this rack? It looks like it would last about five minutes on the NYC streets — that tiny, single-point mounting would probably be easier to break than most locks. We have no idea what is wrong with the standard bike rack that works everywhere else — the inverted,...

The CityRacks Design Competition has come to a close, with this bicycle rack design from Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve (Bettlelab) winning top prize. The competition, which saw over 200 entries from around the world, called for an innovative bike rack design to be implemented throughout NYC. Ten of the top prototypes were installed and tested at Astor Place in NYC since September 30, including some less conventional designs, like the Gaudi-esque rack by fadarchitecture seen below. CityRacks explains their decision: Mahaffy and De Greeve’s design reflects a modern simplicity that will greatly enhance the City’s streetscape. The...

Image: DESIGN 21 Biodiversity isn’t the only thing that is threatened nowadays – it seems that linguistic diversity (and by extension, cultural diversity) is also deteriorating as our world becomes increasingly mono-lingual and mono-cultural. Of the estimated 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, experts say that nearly half are endangered and may disappear within a generation. Every two weeks, another language disappears, consigning equally valuable cultural perspectives and histories to s......
