Let’s revisit a topic that we addressed several months ago: illicit online streaming of television broadcasts, namely sports. This is different from going to the Pirate Bay a few hours after a show airs and downloading a file. We’re talking about, hey, the big game’s on, let’s go to justin.tv or ustream to watch it. The Guardian brings this up today in a quick little piece on justin.tv. It seems the Barclays Premier League (England’s top professional football league) doesn’t like it when Little Tommy streams games online for all to see for free. This is a violation of...
MP3 Players are nothing new, especially those non-video playing brands like the iPod nano and the Creative Zen Stone. It appears that Nextar is getting in on this midget MP3 action with the Nextar MA588, otherwise known as the Peanut. It also has high speed 2.0 USB interface for fast file transfer, and it can provide 12 hours of continuous playback with one AAA battery. The Nextar Peanut also has seven equalizer modes including normal, pop, rock, classical, jazz, bass, and soft....
This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services. We know that Clearspring is the biggest widget network in the world, but they are also dominating early voting in the Embeddable Widgets category of the Open Web Awards. Top competitors so far include Sprout and RadicalBuy, while last year’s winners – Flockr and Widgetbucks – did not make it to the voting round. Here’s a look at all of the companies in the running: ConveyThis – Translates a website or blog post into any of 29 different languages. Clearspring –...
This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services. Since kicking off the voting round of the Open Web Awards yesterday, we’ve seen nearly 10,000 votes cast across 26 different categories. In the Mainstream Social Networks category, Twitter has the early lead, but has some tough competition from last year’s winners, Facebook and Netlog. With voting open until November 30th, perhaps one of these contenders can make a run for the award: Dotblu – A social network geared primarily towards teens, where users compete in various games to earn virtual...
While many of us have our collection of nice electronic toys, most of us can't afford to walk into a store, take a look at a company like Sony's complete line of Bravia media equipment and walk out with it all. And your conscience might stop you anyway—even if your wallet could take the hit, you know enough to look around at other respectable brands, maybe some Samsung or LG equipment, and make a more informed decision. Well today we're taking the role of "that guy" for you. Sony shipped us their latest Bravia LCD TV along with all of...
The Google Reader team announced that they launched a new feature which will automagically translate a feed into your own language. This is huge! If you’re reading this feed and your native language is, for example, Spanish, you may want this feed translated automagically into Spanish so you can more easily read it. Obviously, it will not be a perfect translation as no computer generated translation is perfect, but it’s far better than reading it in English. But the flip side is true as well. If there’s a feed in, let’s say Swedish, and your native language is English, but...

Now's your chance to break down that language barrier, and reach out to them. Recently YouTube's really been ramping up its efforts to bring viewers a more cinematic online-video-viewing experience, a trend that continues as they bring home all the sophistication of foreign cinema with a new auto-translate features for subtitles. Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. After all, machine translation being what it is, it's not particularly likely that you'll get more then a bare-bones understanding of what's going on, but at least that's better than nothing. Of course, the functionality will only be available for videos which have had subtitles or captions uploaded with YouTube's recently-added caption feature, which...
Over the weekend, YouTube introduced a new feature to help make captioned or subtitled videos more accessible to international users. The new system uses machine translation to convert any of these videos into your language of choice in real time. To access this feature, users simply need to turn it on from the lower-right corner of the player. From there, they can use a simple drop-down menu to pick which language into which they want the video translated. Unfortunately, YouTube won't remember a user's translation choices from one video to the next, but this seems like a feature that...
