Eco Gadgets: Digital clock gets powered by lemons Eco Factor: Battery-free digital clock powered by lemons. Florian Dussopt and Julie Girard have used lemons not to make lemonade, but to power a special clock that replaces battery power with lemon power. The clock comes with a wooden plank that has two spikes of copper and zinc built into it. All the user has to do is to cut a lemon in two halves and place them on each spike. The copper and zinc spikes start an electrolysis reaction in presence of citric acid that comes from lemons to generate electricity, which is used to run the clock....

Digital Clock powered by lemonsHere’s a clock for those who have no clock and a spare lemon tree in the backyard. The tree will come in handy since this clock is powered by the energy of a lemon, which will power it for a week or longer. The design is intended to remind us that nature is still our direct energy source. When life hands you lemons and a lemon powered clock, most people would just make lemonade and get the time from the microwave. But some of us will put lemons on our clock, and through the sour sucking power of citrus, attract...

The Pin Clock Makes Watching Time Tick by Fun [Stuff We Like] A big part of staying productive is keeping track of time, how much and on what you spend it—so why not make glancing at the clock as fun as possible? The Pin Clock is a nifty digital clock that pushes out pins to display its numbers (like that pin toy thing you used to stick your face into as a kid). Ok fine, we're no gadget blog, and the whole "keeping track of time" spin is probably a reach—but we just couldn't resist this one. The Pin Clock will set you back $60 at Amazon. PIC digital clock project Punkky is a watch enthusiast from Japan. On his blog, PIC Microcontroller Note, he's documenting the built of a 7-Segment PIC Digital Clock using the PIC16F628A MCU. It's his first MCU project. After working the kinks out on breadboards, he etched and hand-routed a board (he'll share the Eagle file with others if you ask). DIY iPhone-Turned-Alarm-Clock Stand [IPhone] Clever do-it-yourselfer and iPhone owner Nathan Barry flipped over the black plastic packaging his phone shipped in, and cut out a section with a sharp craft knife to turn it into a stand. Then he installed the iPhone Alarm Clock application, and uses the phone in stand on his night table. Barry writes: I'd been after a nice looking digital clock for the bedroom for ages, so I was pleased with the 'Digital Clock' app from the iPhone App Store. It's quite customizable (colour, brightness and digit style) and auto-rotates. Only problem is you have to leave it on...

Recommended!: CommonwealthCommonwealth is a homey Park Slope bar that bills itself as "indie," yet somehow neutralizes pretension as soon as you walk in the door. This is a very good thing. I can't speak much for the beer selection (although I hear they serve a great Dark and Stormy), so I will instead review that somethingsomething known as "atmosphere": it's excellent here, enough to make you wish this was your local. Three points make it so. First, a fantastical jukebox: Sebadoh, the Zombies, Smashing Pumpkins, Andrew Bird (<3), Radiohead, Mum. There is even a small stool reserved for song-selection, so you...

Do-It-Yourself iPhone Stand Let's You Rock Out With Your Clock Out! LONDON, UK - Here's a super slick concept that couples a simple do-it-yourself iPhone stand with the wildly popular app "Digital Clock". Nathan Barry fashioned himself a custom iPhone stand using the plastic tray found in his original iPhone 3G packaging. The idea centered around creating a digital clock stand for his bedroom. "Quite easy to do," Barry said, "All you need is a sharp craft knife and a steady hand." I opted to take Barry's lead by downloading the $.99 "Digital Clock" app because you can customize the settings. Choose from four display colors, modern or LED display,...

First Looks: Logitech Pure-Fi AnytimeDesigned as an aggressively-priced alarm clock radio, Logitech's new Pure-Fi Anytime ($100) features dual alarms, an easy-to-see digital clock face, AM and FM tuning capabilities, and motion-sensitive illuminated top controls. Like Pure-Fi Express Plus, Anytime works with both iPods and iPhones, and has a battery compartment -- this one requires an included screwdriver to open and provides only backup power to the clock, via an included 9-Volt battery.…...

PC Screensaver AnalogyPC Screensavers do not really have a functional purpose anymore because today’s LCD monitors because they do not make use of cathode ray tubes which could “burn in” images into the screen. Today screensavers serve an mostly aesthetic purpose. There is also the believe that screensavers save energy when they are running which is not the case. Users who want to save energy should configure the computer to turn off the monitor after a certain time instead. The PC screensaver Analogy (via Lost in Technology) by Jesson Yip provides strong visual elements. The basic idea is to display a analog-digital...

How Many Google Phone Engineers Does It Take to Tell the Time? [Android Interface Mess]So here I was, all excited about Android. Not because the G1's physical design is specially attractive. In fact, it's a gray design with no soul. Not because of the user interface, which at first glance reminded me of a mash-up between the Nintendo DS and a '90s Windows desktop manager. No, I was excited because this is the first post-iPhone smartphone that could be a serious challenger to Apple's mounting dominance. Then I looked closely at this image and realized the G1 will not pose a threat to Apple at all. Hear me out. The problem in this promotional...

Audiovox finally ships Homebase Digital Message CenterFiled under: Displays, Household Remember those way swank Digital Message Centers we peeked at CES this year? At long last, Audiovox has begun shipping the audio-only DPF710K ($149.99), which sticks upside your fridge and provides a 7-inch display, a dry erase board, digital clock, Post-it pad and a LED message indicator for good measure. If you haven't pieced it together, this thing seeks to simplify your family's lives by providing a base for leaving photos and messages, and we'll admit, it does have a smidgen of a Jetsons vibe to it. Those holding out for the video-capable DPF711K can lay...

By Haroon Baig Clocks don’t have to be boring. Of course, clocks need need to remain usable and display current time; however, they can do it in a number of creative ways. You are about to see some of the most creative examples out there. Take some time and enjoy. 1. Uniqlock What shall I say. If the others are songs, Uniqlock is the concert. Japanese girls dance focusing your attention away from the passing time. Probably one of the strangest — unique — clock screensavers out there. 2. Word Clock Whether you hate or love Helvetica, you’ll just...

iHome ships rotatable iH41 iPod alarm clockFiled under: Peripherals, Portable Audio We've heard about iHome's twistable iH41 since CES, but it looks like the outfit finally got its act together and began to ship these out. Designed specifically for the iPod touch and its variable aspect screen, this unit can be flipped for easy orientation switching that enables users to view widescreen videos while it's docked and charging; when rotated, the digital clock display will also adjust to "complement the position of the unit." Notably, there's no mention of iPhone / iPhone 3G compatibility, but you do get a handy remote thrown in should you decide...

Desktop Linux suckage: introductionWindows 2000 I remember around the year 2000, or whenever it was that Windows 2000 actually came out, I thought Microsoft were doing pretty well. Much as it pained me to say it, I also thought Windows was the best OS available. At the time, Windows was without question the best place to run Sun's JVM, Netscape was running aground, and IE was picking up steam to become the best web browser of the time. Microsoft really looked like they were getting their act together. Each release of their OS had been convincingly better than the previous one, and Windows...
Desktop Linux suckage: introduction - Louis Gray
"Apple reinvented Mac OS, and the web turned into a dangerous place Windows just wasn't ready for. Commercial Unix died, with the arguable exception of the server room. Linux? Well, Linux just kind of muddled along. It didn't get much better, but it didn't get much worse. It was fine for development work, but a pretty lame desktop. Many Unix lovers (and haters, because it's quite hard to be one without also being the other) settled on a Linux box for development work and a Mac for everything else." - Louis Gray
My web statistics show more people using Linux distros than Mac OS. Linux for the desktop is here to stay. I have used both Ubuntu and openSUSE. Combined with Wine or CrossOver I can run everything I need except for photo editing with Adobe Lightroom 2.0 - Michael Tefft
My workstation at home and work are Ubuntu boxes. Have been running them for years. - imabonehead
@Michael, on louisgray.com, it's 65% Windows, 27% Macintosh, and 4% Linux. iPhone is 4th highest at 1.5%. On a second site I track, it's 91% Windows, 7% Macintosh and 2% Linux. Certainly can change depending on your focus and audience. - Louis Gray
Have been using WinXP for my desktop, CentOS for servers, and now added a Mac Mini to my mix. - Ernie Oporto
Very nice piece. As a user and tinkerer, my experiences of operating systems seems to be somewhat different to your experiences and choices as a developer. I for one have been getting more and more disenchanted with Windows over the years, and was so glad to learn that the Linux desktop was finally usable for the tech-savvy average joe. I made the switch like a shot, and I'm very happy here. - Slippy Lane
Apple has been selling more laptops every quarter. The fact is the vast majority of consumers will just use whatever OS is installed, getting people to change browsers is hard enough. Sad really as I find Apple to be a terribly two-faced company with an incredible marketing department - Cains
does the OS itself really matter that much? I spend so much time on the web, that I hardly notice the OS anymore. - ben rogers

Stonehenge robot clock arm tells time by arranging little cards — The Stonehenge Robotic Clock from Norris Labs is a robot arm that tells time by plucking numbered cards from an array around its body, setting them down in front of itself, waiting, then doing it again with fresh cards. Depending on the time-change, it can take more than a minute to advance by one minute -- the robot knows this, so it skips those minutes and jumps straight to the next one, timing its motions to finish the advance right on the dot. Stonehenge - A Robotic Digital Clock (via Make)...
