Blockbuster Teams With Microsoft For Mobile MoviesBlockbuster has teamed with Microsoft to bring digital video to mobile devices using Microsoft’s Live Mesh technology. It sounds like this will still be a download service and not streaming, based on the suggested use case of buying content from an airport kiosk to sync to a mobile device to use while traveling. Though you might think otherwise from this quote: “Eventually, we’ll give customers instant access to any movie on any device with an internet connection and a screen,” vowed Blockbuster Chief Information Officer Keith Morrow in an interview with the Dallas Morning News. When I read “instant access...

For our latest mission, 20 Improv Everywhere agents personally welcomed home total strangers at JFK airport. Cable One makes some HD channels viewable only with CableCARD / STBFiled under: Tuners, CableAt first glance, we assumed that Cable One had relegated a number of channels to switched digital video, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, company officials have proclaimed that "cable programmers like Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD and ESPN HD have requested their signals to be scrambled," meaning that subscribers will now need to fork out for a CableCARD or cable company-issued set-top-box in order to see all 24 high-def stations offered in Sioux City, Iowa. Ah well, you've been looking for a valid reason to make the leap to a carrier with a...

Now that you know how to find higher quality videos on YouTube (and save them), you can also embed the video elsewhere in higher quality. Add &ap=%2526fmt%3D18 to the "value" of the object's movie parameter and the embed "src" paramater. You may have to adjust the final number 18 up or down to find the best value — originally format 6 was the way to go, though apparently 22 is now the best possible format. Why watch gameplay videos from the new World of Warcraft expansion any other way? High quality YouTube video hack [Kottke]...

RED Releases New Digital Video and Still Camera System, Including a 3D Video Prototype Maybe we can finally believe the hype. Jim Jannard is formally announcing his customizable digital video and still camera RED system today that aims to take on DSLRs and further push the boundaries of video quality. But the hypemaster couldn't help himself with only one announcement. Oh no. He had to go out and give us a prototype of a RED 3D camera (see pic below), giving the 3D movement another boost of juice (albeit a vaporware-ish one) that suggests that technology will be legitimate and mainstream within a few years. After taking a quick look at the specs...

The round was led by .406 Ventures, and included previous investors The Aurora Funds and Chrysalis Ventures. Puppy cam: the latest internet sensationWhat time is it? It's Cute'O'Clock!Remember the alarm with which we met the launch of Justin.tv in March 2007, as Justin Kan broadcast his not-particularly-interesting life to the world, 24/7. Well, finally someone ha discovered a use for life-casting technology, filming their six baby Shiba Inu puppies all day, every day for the past month.Much like Big Brother (but without the annoying people), the pups don't really do anything much apart from sleep, but there's always enough chewing, fighting, tickling, scratching and frolicking to keep viewers entertained.Puppy cam has notched up 2,464,939 views as I write this. But enjoy it...

TroopTube Video Site Connects Military Families [Digital Video] In commemoration of Armistice Day, which marked the end to hostilities on the Western Front in World War I, Americans celebrate Veteran's Day. Military OneSouce, an online destination serving members of the United States armed services and their families, chose the date to announce the launch of TroopTube, a YouTube-like site for uploading and sharing videos. Unlike YouTube (which users of defense networks aren't allowed to access), users won't be able to embed videos on third-party sites, and the Department of Defense will moderate to make sure no videos posing potential security risks are posted. Members of the general...

@ Society of Editors: You're not printers, you're producersVeteran web video guru Michael Rosenblum delivered the kind of high-energy, evangelical speech that these kind of events really need to stop everyone falling asleep. Bob Books Flickbooks A wonderfully tactile keepsake, the Bob Books Flickbook takes your personal video clips and renders them as an old-fashioned pocket-sized flip book. The clever format makes for a fun way to share the ubiquitous videos shot on digital cameras and cell phones—both a curious novelty and a tangible document for the more ephemeral digital videos. To create a Flickbook, convert any digital video into either .mov, .avi, .mp4 or .mpg format. The Flickbook generator allows you to select the best section, which needs to clock in between six and eight seconds and can't exceed the 30 MB size limit....
