Earlier this week the entire internet audience was completely appalled by a story reported by NewTeeVee of a 19-year old Abraham Biggs’ suicide broadcast life on Justin.tv. I am not going into details of the fatal event here as it is not relevant to this publication at all and I don’t think everyone I particularly willing to knowing everything behind the terrible story - everyone interested in the details and the background will find plenty of them here while I am just going to focus on the internet side of the story and the implications it can have for the...
I've been following Dave Winer's new netbook passion with obvious interest. He dipped a toe in the netbook waters back in July with the purchase of an Asus Eee PC 901 and it's clear to me that Dave "gets it" with this device genre. He needed a low-cost, highly portable device that could still run Microsoft Windows XP. He has other requirements too, but they're all met by a netbook. While we (and by we I mainly mean me) sometimes try to push the limits of these small companion devices, Dave happily uses a netbook for its intended purpose....
Filed under: Cellphones Men, be careful with the lies your tell your wives. See, there's this thing called the Internet which is... uh, like series of tubes connecting everybody. On The Internets you'll find services like Google and places to discuss just about anything imaginable, even the iPhone. So when you tell your wife that there's a bug in the iPhone that causes photos of your naughty bits to "sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent," well, it won't take long before she's on the Apple...
The elusive white G1, rumored to have been recalled due to paint chipping, is not expected for a launch at least until after the Thanksgiving holiday. I know this might not come as a shock to most considering the amount of chatter about the release date for the phone that spreads across numerous discussion forums. This is a little delayed I grant you that, this article was supposed to post a number of days ago but circumstances of course wouldn’t allow for that. The bronze G1 has been temporarily removed from my-tmobile due to you know, a lot of...
If I had a dime for every time “what’s a good case?” has been asked on the discussion forums, I could probably afford to buy all my phones out of contract. It’s a question that comes up with regularity and often increases with the release of new devices such as the Treo Pro. The number of cases available for the Treo Pro is growing in leaps and bounds so we decided to group a few together for review. For starters, we’ll look at cases designed for a horizontal carry; the DLO Hipcase and the Incipio Bond Street case. To...
The Financial Times is about to re-launch FT.com with a new look and feel, as the screenshot above indicates. My instinctive reaction to the new look: A much more attractive layout, making good use of white (er, pink) space I’d lose the pink background, though, a bit nauseous on the eye. I understand the reasoning why a pink background is important to the FT, as the popup explanation indicates when you hover over the ‘2’ on the sample new page. Yet, if I were the FT, I’d not do that as I find it simply a distracting element on...
If multiple reports across the web are to be believed, the answer might be yes. According to a rather sizeable thread over at the Apple discussion forums, a number of users are experiencing a curious problem that causes the track pad on their new Macbook to freeze up and stop registering clicks after 50 or so successful pushes. The freeze seems to last for 5-10 clicks, after which the button begins functioning again. There has been no official response from Apple, so we can only speculate as to the cause, but according to many of the responses on the...

This is a guest post from Stephen Popick, administrator for the Get Rich Slowly discussion forums. Two years ago when I bought my People 150cc scooter, I was teased ceaselessly by my car-loving friends. It wasn’t so long ago that gas was under two dollars a gallon, and the need for more efficient wheeled transportation wasn’t as “in your face” as it is now. Today, when my friends talk about my scooter (or my wife’s) it’s to ask where I got it, for how much, and how much we save by having them. J.D. recently mentioned he was thinking of...

Of course it is quite understandable that everyone has to do some personal staff now and then when in the office - like answer an urgent phone call or have a quick chat on Skype with a friend to decide where to meet in the evening. I believe that it is even worse with IT professionals as we have even more distractions now that often play an important part in our lives - like IMs, discussion forums, Twitter, FriendFeed, various social networks and entertainment applications. And while for some people this could be a part of the workflow itself if...
On the Internet, nobody knows your site is a dog (to paraphrase the famous New Yorker cartoon). At least not yet. Semantic search engine Hakia wants to change that. Ask.com is not the only search engine rolling out a redesign today. So is Hakia, which is introducing tabs to its search interface. One of the tabs is “credible sites.” These are results from sites that have been vetted by librarians and information specialists (although anyone can suggest sites). So far, Hakia has built out a directory of credible sites around health, medical, and environmental issues. The “credible” results tend to...
