Facebook Connect: Scary but good One of the companies adopting Facebook's new log-in system, Facebook Connect, is CBS, parent company of CNET and publisher of Webware. I'm glad we're on board with this program, even if I do feel it's a bit of Faustian deal. Here's why. First of all, CNET's own log-in system (which you see when you want to leave a comment on a CNET blog post, write a user review, or participate in other CNET community features) is not universally loved inside CNET. There are factions here at the company who want it changed, or even eliminated in some cases. There...

Just Wow: YouTube Had 344M Global Uniques in Oct.Not that you didn’t already know that YouTube commands an audience all over the world, but here are the numbers that prove it. ComScore hasn’t given out U.S. video measurements since July (the delay is apparently because it’s in the process of expanding its video measurement techniques so it can measure ads vs. content, premium vs. user-generated content, and other distinctions). But venture capitalist Fred Wilson (who until earlier this year sat on comScore’s board) was able to rustle up some October worldwide numbers to prove a point he was making in a blog post about YouTube’s audience compared to...

Sadness Is HealthyMind Hacks points me to this article on the "medicalization" of unhappiness:The blurring of the distinction between normal intense sadness and depressive disorder has arguably had some salutary effects. For example, it has reduced the stigma of depression and created a cultural climate that is more accepting of seeking treatment for mental illness. Many people with normal sadness might benefit from medication that ameliorates their symptoms. However, the usefulness of medication for normal sadness, and especially the trade-off between symptom reduction and adverse effects, has not been carefully studied—partly because the necessary distinctions do not exist within the current diagnostic...

Ratchet & Clank headline another PSP-3000 bundle; you're simply thrilled Look, we know how much you love Ratchet & Clank-oriented PSP SKUs, don't try and hide your desire. This latest PSP-3000 bundle to feature the respectively furry / mechanical duo includes a black PSP and Everyday Shooter in addition to Ratchet & Clank Size Matters, instead of the silver PSP and echochrome featured in that other bundle. The new bundle hits on December 15 for the same old $199 pricetag. We're still waiting on...

Yahoo to make BrowserPlus open-source It was probably inevitable given what Google did with Gears, but Yahoo said Tuesday it's releasing BrowserPlus software as open-source software. BrowserPlus and Gears are aimed at improving browsers' native abilities so Web applications can better match those running natively on a computer's operating system, and Gears already is open-source software. Yahoo announced its intent to make BrowserPlus open-source software on its Yahoo Developers Blog on Tuesday. "Openness is a key initiative and a major theme for Yahoo this year and beyond, and open-sourcing BrowserPlus is part of that commitment," said team member Lloyd Hilaiel. "This will allow developers...

What Women Should Know About Men's BrainsAs more and more research reveals the differences in the male and female brains, it becomes easier for each gender to better understand the other and to allow the differences to unite rather than separate us.After many carefully controlled studies, scientists have discovered actual physical differences between the brains of males and females. Men and women tend to maintain these unique brain characteristics throughout their lives. For example, men’s brains are about 10% larger than female brains. Larger doesn't necessarily mean smarter, although men like to think this is so. Now women can understand why men let compliments "go to their...
I think most of this article is complete and utter shit. I'm the exception to most of their observations. - Lindsey Smith
What Women Should Know About Men's Brains | Dumb Little Man - Lindsey Smith
I disagree, Lindsey. And, yes, you may be the exception to most of the observations, but I, as an amateur anthropologist, have made many of the same observations the article suggests. When you speak in extremes, such as "all," every," and "none" you will always find the exception. - Mark VandenBerg
My only frustration is that the article spends the bulk of its time talking about what men tend to do well without really touching on the aspects that they don't do well. We already know that men are more likely to be good at math, physically stronger, and have better eye-hand coordination. How does that help? What about the things that actually tend to drive women nuts? Not mentioned =P - Stupid Blogger
Oh, Lindsey! Please tell us more. Tell us how the brains of men and women are exactly alike in every detail. I love it! - Christopher Harley
did you see that domain name? didn't you see that (rather large, even bulge) tongue in chick? ;) - silpol
I think there are many more exceptions than just me. They focused on the most ridiculous generalities such as map-reading and why more men are engineers. I think the reason more men are in those fields has more to do with social factors than their brain. - Lindsey Smith
And I fully agree that men and women are different, but those lines are blurring a little and the way this article is presented isn't very authoritative - Lindsey Smith
I was intrigued by the apparent different approach of time, as time very much is a cultural construct. - Irma Vermaat
Anyone else wonder why the picture is three guys under a sheet, smoking, apparently naked, and either watching TV or opening a garage door? And where is that middle guy's left hand. In this situation, if they're all hetero, it should be visible. :D Ok, seriously, my opinion, human brains vary between typical masculine traits through to typical feminine traits. Most men's are more masculine. Most women's are more feminine. Everyone's is different. - nicerobot
Tina: I was hoping for a more balanced view, as well. Motor skills and optical manipulation keeps a lot of girls out of hockey, for instance, even though girls are generally physically stronger until puberty. - Mark VandenBerg
The authority he quoted was neuropsychiatrist, Louann Brizendine. Here's her book, "The Female Brain." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Female_Brain_(book) - Christopher Harley
I find the whole "men have better ability for visualizing 3D stuff" funny. I have a very good sense of that and Tad doesn't at all. We have a running argument about what will and won't fit in the back of the car (furniture, groceries, luggages, whatever). He's always amazed at my skills at packing luggage or other stuff. I think generalizations are generally not that valuable. - Lindsay Donaghe
Lindsay -- same in my household -- wife is expert in 3d space evaluation, packing luggage, trunks et al -- I suck - Brian Sullivan
there small - fotographic
BTW - what the heck does this have to do with anything else in the article? " When women complain that men don’t listen or remember to do things, a lack of concern or lack of interest may not be at fault. " I don't think that's a conclusion you can draw from any of the other information presented! - Lindsay Donaghe
@·[▪_▪]· ...I agree with your comments on variability. I liken it to bell curves at each end of the spectrum, overlapping in the middle, though I have no idea if this view is at all scientifically accurate. - Logical Extremes
That's true to a point, Logical, but there are definite physical differences between a 'female' brain and a 'male' brain. For instance, the corpus colosum (sp?) which connects the two hemispheres of the brain tends to be larger in women than in men. Whether that is X chromosome driven (genetic), or androgen exposure driven (environment) is the toss-up. - Stupid Blogger
Nurture can overcome a lot of nature. - Logical Extremes
There also is a difference between various types of people. For instance, those with a severe engineering mindset are likely to have poor social skills. Those that are extremely creative tend to not be very pragmatic. These differences are not gender-based - Mark VandenBerg
LMAO Mark - I'm an engineer!! :P Although your observation is generally true... it also depends on WHICH kind of engineer, some are [stereotypically] better than others with social skills. I also think it's crap that they use this info to describe why women aren't in these fields. I believe it has more to do with social issues. Also, it's easier to be a mom who is a teacher than a mom who is an engineer, pilot, etc... - Corpse Bride Katie
Totally agree with that, Katie... before you have kids, your career field is open. Once you have kids, if you're the mom, your career choices are limited (unless the dad is going to take over the mommy role). You are not as available for travel or lots of overtime or other sacrifices in typically "male" careers. Not that it can't be done, but you can't be as effective of a parent because you have to choose between family and career more. - Lindsay Donaghe
That was my point, Katie. It's personality types, not gender, that define our skill-set. Our skill-set (most often) defines our career choice. Lindsay I agree that what you describe is fact today, but isn't that 100% social and not a gender-based situation? - Mark VandenBerg
You would think so, Mark, but it's not. For a long time I maintained that I could do my job with the same availability as my male counterparts, but I have realized that that's not the case. I simply cannot give up as much family time as they can, mainly because they have wives that stay at home and take care of the kids so they don't have to worry about family issues. In my case, Tad has been in a position to take care of that stuff for the last few years, but it has started to bother me that I haven't. - Lindsay Donaghe
It's taken me 14 years to realize why it would be desirable to be able to be a homemaker instead of a working mother. There is just too much stuff to do when you have a home and family... Two working parents don't have the time to get it all done. And it's usually the wife who's expected to pick up the slack... it wears you down. You don't have as much flexibility at work because of obligations at home. That limits the jobs you can choose from. - Lindsay Donaghe
If I didn't have a family I think I could be a pretty successful consultant. I wouldn't mind traveling all over the country or the world. I would seek out glamorous and interesting projects and build up enough credibility that I wouldn't have to accept work I wasn't interested in just to pull in a paycheck. But I can't do that with a family. I would never every see them. I would be a horrible wife and mother. - Lindsay Donaghe
But is that because one gender is the better wage earner, or because our society syas that women should stay home and rear children and men should be the wage earner? - Mark VandenBerg
I think it is a social thing in that, as a mother, I feel more obligated to take care of the kid and the house... to provide a good environment for my family. And I feel guilty if I don't think I am doing a good job of that. I think that's a psychological imperative that is common for women. Society responds by saying we're not capable of doing as good a job as men because we're "distracted" from work and expects the less psychologically burdened man to be able to perform better. Chicken/egg? - Lindsay Donaghe
I think women are just as capable of performing well at a job as a man, as long as there is flexibility in her availability. If tasks are highly deadline or location oriented environment it will be more difficult for a working mother to perform well over the long term. But if tasks are allowed to be performed in a more flexible timeline/location (bits that build to completion) then women can produce just as high quality outcome as men. All this is my personal opinion based on observation, of course. - Lindsay Donaghe
And that probably doesn't apply to single women or even married women without kids who don't have that obligation to provide for someone who can't take care of them self. - Lindsay Donaghe
Agreed. - Mark VandenBerg

The Future Gives Some People Hives [Quote Of The Day]"There is a very small subset of the population who are incapable of reading or watching any story that does not take place in the present... But these people are a minority. I’ve come to view their condition as being akin to a food allergy. I will leave them alone and not bother them with my world anymore or chase after their respect or worry at their opinions. But for the majority of us, SF&F is so pervasive in all our media, not to mention in our vocabulary and our lives, that it is becoming silly to draw distinctions. We...

Enterprise Microsharing: The Next Wave?Everyone (at least, everyone in our corner of the world) knows about Twitter. But have you ever thought about the possibilities of setting up something Twitter-like on your own intranet? If so, you’re not alone. That’s one of the basic messages of a new comparison of enterprise microsharing tools from Pistachio Consulting. You may have heard about some of the Twitter alternatives like Identica and Yammer. But the Pistachio team has identified a solid 20 applications in this space already - and undoubtedly there are more lurking in the wings. With this overabundance, it’s useful to have some sort of...

The Republican Case For Marriage EqualityTom Campbell, a Republican and former five-term U.S. Congressman, makes the case:Republicans believe deeply that government should be limited. Government has no business making distinctions between people based on their personal lives. That's why, as a Californian and a Republican who has held elective office at the federal and state levels, I will be voting No on Proposition 8. Same-sex couples already exist, so do different-sex couples. Californians in these relationships are our firefighters, nurses, police officers, and small business owners. They pay taxes and contribute to our economy and our society. Californians come in different shapes and sizes; that's...

Mo' MarketingCanadian Club Whisky is an iconic brand, the favorite of MAD MEN’s Don Draper, but perhaps best known to you through their brilliant “Damn Right Your Dad Drank It” ad campaign.  And damn right, they’re a SHIFT client. Our upcoming project for CC is in support of Movember.  “Mo” is slang for moustache, and Movember is a moustache-growing contest that takes place next month, to raise money and awareness for men’s health.   As part of the promotional efforts, SHIFT created a Movember Facebook application, with which you can graffiti your friends’ Profile pics with an assortment of moustaches...    Incredibly silly,...

Paul Abrams: Obama until November: Just Keep it Short, Simple and Sharpen Distinctions — We are down to the wire, and droves of people who, perhaps amazingly to those of us who have been embroiled in this for 2 years, are starting to pay attention to the candidates. For those people, and for those who may be at the end of their patience, for Obama to bring this home, he ought to keep it simple and make the distinctions sharp. Like this: 1. John McCain's tax cuts provide most of the money to the wealthy. Mine go to the middle class. 2. John McCain opposes equal pay for equal work for women. I'm for...

My Own Worst Enemy Fails To Live Up to Admittedly Meager Expectations [Christian Slater Is Still Alive]My favorite episode in the 10-year run of Alfred Hitchcock's famous anthology series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, is "The Case of Mr. Pelham." It concerns a man being stalked by a person who he believes to be his double. By turns frightening and utterly insane, the drama builds with just a few sets and actors. And that's what I was dreaming of as I viewed the new NBC Christian Slater vehicle, My Own Worst Enemy. Click on to explore Hitchcock's masterpiece and our review of tomorrow night's pilot. Slater's Henry-Edward combo may not be that far away from Robert Louis Stevenson's...

Mufin launches new music discovery engine beta, Download Squad readers are invitedFiled under: Audio, Internet, Features, Web services, web 2.0 As a music lover, one of my favorite innovations of the last five years or so has come in the form of music discovery services. Services like Last.fm, Pandora, Rhapsody and iTunes 8 have made it easy to find artists or songs that are similar to your musical tastes and preferences. The only problem with these services, is that they are based on limited databases (like the iTunes Music Store, for iTunes's Genius Mode), reviews or ratings by other users and overall popularity. That means that the music discovered might indeed...

Facebook Group And Brand Page Best Practices Image via CrunchBase Facebook is an easy place to engage a group of people around your brand. The social tools, group functionality and free brand pages give companies, clubs and organizations an unprecedented level of access to a group of interested consumers. The easy advertising tools also allow businesses to promote themselves to the 100 million (or thereabouts) users on the social network, not to mention the social advertising that takes place when someone joins your group or becomes a fan. But as easy as companies, brands an organizations find the interface and as powerful as the feature set...

Google Knol Experiments With AudioGoogle Knol, a fairly recent launch in a space populated by the likes of Wikipedia and Mahalo, received considerably bad press in the last several weeks. Farhad Manjoo of Slate and Harry McCracken of Technologizer are just two individuals who’ve torn into the service as of late. So you might not think it’s worth your while. And substantively, it may not be. But can Wikipedia speak to you? Knol can. Sometimes. If you browse Knol’s catalogue of user-submitted articles (a number of which duplicate content from Wikipedia, but that’s another item for another day), you will find that audio tracks...

I am a member of the NextNY mailing list which is a group of New York folks that talk about tech business and entrepreneurship. A recent conversation and actually a persistent theme in that group is that in a startup, an idea is worth %1 and execution is worth 99% or some other highly disproportionate ratio. I take issue with the concept. Here’s the problem with the formulation. It belies a misunderstanding of what an actionable “idea” really is. A good idea is almost never some light bulb moment that occurs where you realize some insight that no one...

Q&A with Graham Hopper, head of Disney’s game division, on going hardcoreThe distinctions between hardcore games and casual games (the committed enthusiasts versus the broader market fans) are melting away. That’s evident in the strategy of Graham Hopper, president of Disney Interactive Studios. The company puts 70 percent of its investment into titles that support major Disney licenses, but the investment is growing so much that Disney is pouring a lot of money into original titles for hardcore gamers such as “Pure,” a critically-praised off-road ATV racing game that Disney just launched. In a fairly short time, Disney will be tripling the amount of money that it invests in video games....

Would you be excited to hear today about a service that will have its launch next year? That’s what publishing veteran Time Inc and archival giant Getty Images are promising. The two plan to launch what will be LIFE.com to house “the most comprehensive iconic and professional photography collections available anywhere online.” This will go for things historic and things current, things well-documented and things never-before-seen.
