Electric Screwdriver holds screws, screws you out of $4000Here’s an interesting electric screwdriver. It will relieve you of the burden of actually having to hold your screws in your hand. Your laziness will cost you $4000. The Black & Decker LI4000 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion SmartDriver with Exclusive Magnetic Screw Holder has an extended arm with a magnetic tip that holds your screws in place while you screw them in. Okay, it’s not just laziness, but I know that’s what you were thinking too. It can be a real pain when you drop screws while trying to line up the screwdriver. Especially on a ladder. Now you can screw with...

White House Open to Using Bank Bailout Money for Auto BailoutThe White House signaled it might use TARP money (the earlier $700 billion bailout) to help out the Big Three. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said, "Under normal economic conditions we would prefer that markets determine the ultimate fate of private firms. However, given the current weakened state of the U.S. economy, we will consider other options if necessary — including use of the TARP program — to prevent a collapse of troubled automakers.” The Treasury Department also signaled it could help prop up the automakers, and that helped the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 stay in positive territory. Also...

Silicon Valley Tweetup: Jobs Are Available In CommentsJust got back from the Silicon Valley Tweetup (135 said they would come, 226 people saved it), last time this year, Tweetups were just about a dozen people or less, but the growth of the service has really demonstrated it’s popularity, I estimate 150-200 folks there. Unlike blogs, microblogs can have a greater rate of adoption as the barriers to entry –and mobile devices –make it easier and less committal than others. Some of my friends who came desired a more intimate setting split off to private dinners, and that’s fine too, the event is relatively organic, and we certainly...

Puppies Rescue Lost Three-Year-Old In Attempt To Give Us A Break From Sh*tty Economic NewsJust two days after the internet treated us to this video of a dog running out into a highway to rescue another dog, here comes another suspiciously adorable story involving a three-year-old boy who got lost in the woods but survived thanks to two puppies that snuggled up against the kid and kept him from freezing: A toddler lost in the Virginia woods was back home safe Sunday thanks to two puppies who kept him warm through a harrowing night of freezing temperatures Officials said the lost little boy and the two family puppies wandered up to a mile in...

Level 3 To Cut Workforce By 450, or 8%Level 3 Communications (LVLT) this afternoon said it will cut its North American workforce by 450 people, or 8% of its total staff. The company will take a related Q4 charge of $12 million to $15 million. The company did not give a specific explanation for the cuts, so allow me: the cuts reflect the fact that the economy is in the crapper. LVLT, which rose a penny to 81 cents in the regular session, is down 2 cents to 79 cents in later trading....

This morning, after President-Elect Obama laid out the key parts of his economic recovery plan during his weekly address, he turned to the Internet and told the country that he intends to "renew our information superhighway." "It is unacceptable that the United States ranks 15th in the world in broadband adoption. Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online, and they'll get that chance when I'm President - because that's how we'll strengthen America's competitiveness in the world," he said. Sponsor Last month, we highlighted Obama's use of the Web; his...

Rwanda bids to be an Internet hub — Mitch Wagner sez, "Remarkable video by our sister publication, Internet Evolution, about Rwanda's attempts to bootstrap its economy by becoming an Internet hub for Africa. Rwanda was the site of horrible inter-tribal genocide in 1994, as the Tutsis were massacred by Hutu militia. One of the people interviewed in this video -- a former officer of the Hutu military, who now leads one of the nation's leading telecoms -- says that he doesn't believe the genocide could have happened today, because the Internet would have gotten the world out. I wish I could be so sure. The video shows Rwanda...

Analysis: Toyota Takeover Could Save GM — In his prepared remarks before the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday, General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner Jr. spoke of the urgent need for federal assistance for the Big Three U.S. automakers. Wagoner insisted that such funding is not only necessary for GM, but vital to the U.S. economy as well. He specifically requested that the federal government make available $12 billion in short-term loans, along with a $6 billion line of credit in the event the current severe market downturn persists, with an immediate loan of $4 billion and a second draw of up to $4 billion in January....

Survival is Competitive DifferentiationWe’ve read a few articles lately claiming that survival is not a strategy. The arguments in Anand Rajaraman’s article on GigaOM last month are sound, and if we understand them correctly include not prolonging a business that will never likely “win” or be healthy or have an exit resulting in wealth creation for the shareholders. It’s hard, or more appropriately put, impossible to argue with that logic. A quick death of a company that would otherwise die is a good thing for shareholders and employees. That said, we think it is very hard in these times to look into a...

How Low Has The Economy Sunk?In a stark sign the recession is getting worse, the Labor Department says the U.S. lost 533,000 jobs last month. That's a lot more than most analysts were expecting. It was the ugliest month in the job market since 1974. And it likely means we're heading into the worst recession in nearly 30 years.» E-Mail This     » Add to Del.icio.us...

S&P Announces Motorola JNKR Today brought with it nasty news for Motorola. Standard & Poor’s slashed its corporate credit rating on the long-suffering handset maker, noting that the company’s troubled mobile business is likely to continue what is already a two year-long downward slide. “Revenues and profits in the first part of the year will be challenged by a narrower, somewhat-dated product portfolio,” S&P’s Bruce Hyman said in a statement. “Standard & Poor’s also expects about 10 percent fewer handsets to be sold worldwide in 2009 at lower average prices than in 2008.” An ugly blow for Motorola (MOT). With the economy in...
